Stuttgart at home should be a layup but we have the habit of making the easy difficult and the difficult look easy.

Antonio Rudiger’s longest spell at one club was actually at Stuttgart from 2012-2016

Let stick to 4:4:2 without Rodrygo

Yeah it’s also pretty cool playing a 5 time German league winner for the first time in 2024.

I am soooo hyped for this CL campaign to kick off. New competition format aside, we need a big European night to turn things around and click even more. We are a different beast in the CL and we might just need this to wake up.

3:0 is my prediction with Courtois being a wall at the back, and Vini terrorising the German defence.

We got Tchouameni and Bellingham back in the starting lineup, but we have Carvajal playing CB.

Day off for Militao and Dani is more trusted than Vallejo

Hala Madrid !! Let do it.
Last season we faced Union Berlin in the first game of the tournament, and won 1-0 thanks to late goal of Jude in the 94 minute (was the last play of the game). Hope for better start today.

Yep, I'm really excited to kick things off. We haven't really clicked yet, but hopefully as people get back and the front line has more time together, we will start to play well.

Like pramod, I hope that we stay with a 4:4:2. I would play Tchou-Fede-Guler-Bellingham, but how to deploy them is interesting. Last game, we did a poor job of bridging between the defensive/defensive midfield and forwards/attacking midfield. I hope that Tchou is feeling good and plays well as having a real defensive midfielder would let Fede move up more into that middle space and provide better bridging. Bellingham was working hard when he was last playing, but I wouldn't want to depend on him to push that hard on his return, so I'd prefer that Fede and Guler do most of the running, which might involve Fede needing to be more positionally fluid and move more into the left middle channel than he usually does as Guler drops back from the advanced right midfield.

Edit: Heh, took me so long to write this during work that the lineup was posted, making my comment irrelevant. This is a big game for Rodrygo. He really needs to do a good job dropping into advanced midfield on the right to help make connections.

Let’s be a little patient with the performances of Jude and Aurelien.

I’m ecstatic that they’re back, but they’ve both been out a while. Can’t expect them to be in hot form on their first start back

Hope this 4-3-3 shows a significant improvement.

And I just don't mean by the scoreline, but by the fluidity and structure.

We were told that Tchouameni was out fourth CB but he plays in midfield while all 1,60m of Carvajal play in the center or defense?

That could happen and Lucas could be playing above Carvajal,

but it’s unlikely. Tchouameni may be our 4th cb but if we don’t have Camavinga or Ceballos to play in the hole, then we need Aurelien in midfield.

Again, this is why many have argued that while it’s great we’ve got all these versatile players, it shouldn’t be relied upon as a primary relief option when one of our starters needs rest. We don’t have the adequate depth at the cb spot and it’s difficult to rely on that when we need the guy in his primary position.

I don't know much about Stuttgart, but looking at the lineup, they have pretty tall CBs and in deeper midfield, but aren't super tall at the forward positions. I'm sure that Tchou will be asked to mark some of the bigger guys on set pieces.

I actually think that Carvajal has done a pretty good job as a CB when called upon. In a vacuum, I think Tchou is better, but given our issues with the midfield/forward gap in the last few games, I see the value in playing him as a defensive mid to hopefully free up Fede to move forward and link the lines more.

Who it really looks bad on is Vallejo in my opinion. If you aren't able to step in over a small left back, that doesn't speak well to how the coaching staff views him.
