Anyone got actually salary figures for Real Madrid. I'm guessing the 25 man Yankees first team costs more man for man than Real Madrid's roster. The top players in MLB, the NHL, and the NFL make more than the top soccer players anywhere in the world. This will continue to be a factor as American prep sports stars decide which sport to focus on as they get older.
Looks like BBC beat me to it! And the Yankees payroll figure doesn't include the $9MM/year the Rangers are going to continue paying A-Rod. - And to the article, I have to say I was completely unprepared for the sheer volume of folks wearing baseball caps with the Yankees "NY" logo everywhere I went in Britain.
Well A-Rod and Kevin Garnett make around $20M a year (I'm fairly sure). I think Zidane makes around $10M. The thing is there aren't huge transfer fees in the US so owners can afford to pay more.
Nothing at all to do with the Yankees. The vast majority of people (probably at least 95%) have no idea it's a baseball logo - it's seen as the logo of New York (quite why they want to have a New York logo on their hats/caps is another issue). I think it's just seen as a bit cooler to have a hat/cap with NY on it than one that's blank.
Agreed, but don't think the Yankees aren't raking in the dough. While many will be unlicensed, many are.
Baseball teams plays everyday, and people are willing to pay a lot of money to see them play everyday.
I wonder if that wage comparison was done using current interest rates? As, while I was switching to sky sports news I accidently saw some "real" news about a pound being worth 1.91 dollars, it was 1.5ish about a year ago wasn't it? edit: how stupid am i, they have the wages in pounds and dollars... yeah, so current rates, if they compared them to a bit back the yankees would be relatively paying out a lot more.
According to as.com (Spanish sport daily), Real Madrid has a presupuesto (budget) of 225 million Euros. This may include things outside of just player salaries, or even reserve team salaries, etc... but 225 million Euros certainly puts them on par with the Yankees, even outspends them.
Or my wife is from Boston. And yes - that is the esteemed Robert Smith circa 1985 in my avatar. I am thinking of updating it to at least the 90's here shortly.
