He was never mighty in my book, just an overpaid young star who never grew into the superstar that Lopera had bet on and has paid for these past 5+ years!

Betis is in Barcelona right now where they will remain there through Sunday, since they play Gramanet on Thursday in the Copa and Espanyol on Sunday in league play. Historically Betis plays well against the Pericos in Barcelona. The trashing they received at home earlier in the season was an aberration as the results of late have shown. This is a big match also because Betis has lost 3 games in a row on the road and if they are to compete for a CL or UEFA slot you have to win on the road which is a Serra Ferrer trademark.

My prediction 1-2 with goals from Edu and Joaquin.

What about a goal from Oliveira?? I hope he can over come Eto'o as the Golden Boot. However, he is at least 3 goals short of that objective.

    Week 21 Espanyol-Betis (R)

Here is the match report from yesterdays game:

    Viva Er Beti Manque Lopera!

    Pichi

    Espanyol 2-2 Betis: FT Report

    PA
BARCELONA, January 30 (Primera Liga) - Real Betis twice came from a goal down to salvage a point at Espanyol in a battle of two teams on the fringes of the Primera Liga top four.

Marcos Assuncao first levelled for the Andalusian side eight minutes into the second half after Ivan De La Pena had put the Pericos ahead after 27 minutes.

Raul Tamudo looked to have won the game for Espanyol with an 81st minute penalty but Betis earned a point with Fernando Fernando scoring at the death.

An exciting match may hit the headlines for the wrong reasons however with Espanyol officials requesting a message be put over the tannoy in which they asked the home supporters to stop directing racist chants at Betis' black players.

It was a sad diversion from the on-field action which was absorbing throughout.

After a bright run from Tamudo which forced Betis to concede a corner, the visitors engineered the first real threat on goal after four minutes.

Ricardo Oliveira was fouled by De La Pena on the edge of the area and Assuncao's free kick went a fraction past the post.

Antonio Ito was fired up for the game against the side from which he is currently on-loan and after miscuing a shot from the edge of the area he was later booked for an overzealous tackle on Edu.

Espanyol were without their rock at the back, Mauricio Pochettino, who was suspended and while Toni Soldevilla was looking assured as his replacement Betis were creating openings.

Juan Canas had a shot cleared off the line by Alberto Lopo and then defender David Rivas went even closer when a shot came off his back and on to the crossbar.

But Espanyol survived and went ahead in fortunate circumstances when a De La Pena free kick from the left wing evaded everyone in the penalty area and sneaked into the corner of the net.

Minutes after the goal, keeper Carlos Kameni plucked an Oliveira shot, which appeared destined for the top corner, out of the air.

Espanyol had half chances to go further ahead before the interval but neither Dani Garcia or Maxi Rodriguez were able to seriously threaten the Betis goal.

Tamudo was released by De La Pena at the start of the second half and he hit a powerful low drive but keeper Antonio Doblas was equal to it.

Kameni has impressed this season but he was guilty of a blunder for Betis' equaliser.

He came to collect a cross but dropped the ball at the feet of Assuncao on the edge of the area and he hit a low shot into the goal with the keeper stranded.

Dani and Maxi both had chances to put Espanyol back in front but Betis were seeing more of the ball and the Espanyol defence were beginning to look shaky.

A mix up between Lopo and Hugo allowed in Oliveira but he steered a shot past the post.

The game was becoming end to end and Maxi was again guilty of missing a good chance in front of goal.

But Espanyol did go back ahead courtesy of a penalty dispatched by Tamudo after he himself was adjudged to have been pushed by Luis Fernandez.

Betis were not behind for long as six minutes later Spain winger Joaquin sent in a free kick and Fernando headed home.

Joaquin then had the chance to win the match for the visitors but Kameni partly redeemed himself by saving well from 10 yards.

    Re: Week 21 Espanyol-Betis (R)

Well, I didn't hear about the racists chants. I was happy for the draw on the road. Look at what happened to the Sevilla scum. They are only one point ahead. That match in May could be for a CL Spot.

Real Betis-Gramanet Copa del Rey 2nd Leg (R)

Here is the starting lineup for Betis tonite at home:

    Contreras
    luis Fernande
    Varela
    Rivas
    Melli
    Benjamin
    Joaquin
    Assuncao
    Fernando
    Edu
    Oliveira

Betis can tie 1-1 or 0-0 and get through, but they really need to win this game. The second team in Sevilla is currently losing 1-0 and if that result remains will be eliminated from the Copa. :)

Betis, Osasuna reach King's Cup semis

MADRID, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Real Betis ended third division Gramenet's heroic King's Cup run on Wednesday with a thrilling 4-3 home win to book their place in the semi-finals 6-5 on aggregate.

Betis looked on course for an easy victory after quick-fire strikes from Fernando and David Rivas put them 2-0 up but giant-killers Gramenet scored three second-half goals to set up a nail-biting finale.

Earlier, Osasuna reached the semis for the second time in three seasons as a 3-1 home win allowed them to turn round a first-leg deficit and seal a 4-3 aggregate victory over Sevilla.

Midfielder Inaki Munoz looked to have wrapped up a comfortable win when he put the finishing touch to a lightning counter-attack to make it 3-0 in the 90th minute, but an injury-time strike by Sevilla substitute Ariza Makukula made for another exciting finish.

Atletico Madrid ground out a 0-0 draw at Numancia in a first leg match that was postponed after the original fixture was called off because of a frozen pitch.

In the other second-leg match, 23-times champions Athletic Bilbao travel to Valladolid on Thursday holding a 3-2 advantage after the second division side gave the Basque outfit a rough ride in the first leg.

Osasuna cancelled out Sevilla's first-leg advantage 25 minutes into the game at El Sadar when midfielder Valdo headed home after great work by fullback Rafael Clavero on the left.

The Navarrans extended their lead midway through the second half when centre-back Carlos Cuellar ghosted in at the far post to head home from close range after a free kick and midfielder Inaki Mnoz made it 3-0 in the final minute of normal time when he put the finishing touch to a slick counter-attack.

Sevilla striker Ariza Makukula pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but Javier Aguirre's side held on safely for the win.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, midfielder Miki Albert put Gramenet back in their tie against Betis when he turned the ball in from close range after Aaron Bueno had cut a fine pass across the face of the goal.

The home side restored their advantage just before the hour was up, in-form Brazilian striker Ricardo Oliveira volleying into the top corner after an attempted clearance dropped into his path.

Gramenet were not going to give up without a fight, however, and substitute Ruben Blaya kept their hopes alive when he poked home from a metre out after Betis keeper Pedro Contreras had spilled a free kick.

The see-saw battle continued when free kick expert Marcos Assuncao put Betis 4-2 up with a trademark strike from the edge of the area, but Bueno set up a thrilling finale when he toe-poked in three minutes from time.

    Betis in Phil Ball Article

phil Ball who writes for ESPN Soccernet mentioned Betis in his article yesterday:

But the penultimate word this week goes to Betis - don't you just love 'em - whose supporters applauded Osasuna onto the field this Sunday for knocking hated rivals Sevilla out of the cup last Wednesday night. It's no surprise of course, and this sort of mock applause is not unique to Seville, but the curious thing in this case was that Osasuna's win put paid to an all-Seville semi-final, or even final. Betis are still in the competition, having finally overcome little Gramenet in midweek.

Teams around the world from the same city may hate each other as much as these two, but surely none of them would celebrate the disappearance of a possible cup final showdown. Strange indeed, and even stranger given that Osasuna may be their opponents in the semis.

First blood then to Betis, who won 3-1 and hauled themselves up into the UEFA positions, whilst the enemy from across the city beat Levante away and moved into Champions League territory.

What was the last trophy that Sevilla has won?? I don't think it's been recently. So enjoy the VerdiBlancos run in the Copa del Rey. Remember, it was longer than Sevilla's :D
