Got word that the Rapids exploded for 6 and shut out FAU in their game yesterday.

Similar to the U20 game, the younger/newer players spent the majority of the game on the pitch with the regular veterans coming on in limited action late in the game.

Carrieri nothced a pair as did Schmitt. No info at this time as to who scored the other goals.

Also I was told that Byron Foss (backup hopeful, SMU '02 grad) performed quite well between the posts for the Rapids.

Take it for what it's worth but DC beat FAU 5-3 in their matchup a few days ago.

You would like to think that a quality college team could do better against recent collegians on a pro team.

I hate to read too much. I remember the Rapids beating a bunch of youth teams in Mexico one off-season and came out with a mediocre season.

wow!!! is this DC defense??? I'll take that kind of defense anyday when we play them!!! A pro team couldn't play a college team to a shut-out?????

Here is the link to the Rapids site.

I also wanted to cut and paste the lineup.

    Line-up:
    Goalkeeper: Byron Foss

Defense: Ritchie Kotschau (Jason Cole), Robin Fraser (Jeff Stewart), Danny Jackson (Steven Herdsman), Steve Shak

Midfield: Seth Trembly, Pablo Mastroeni (Gilles Grimandi), Natt Borchers, Wes Hart

Forward: Casey Schmidt (Chris Carrieri), Mark Chung (Chris Henderson)

Notes: Goalkeeper Scott Garlick was back on the training field on Monday, recovering from flu-like symptoms that held Robin Fraser and Mark Chung out of training last week. Brian Jackson is the latest victim of the bug. Matt Crawford, and Kyle Beckerman were kept out of the lineup after a hard played game the previous day.

It looks like Hankinson is mixing things up a bit. He put Hart and Trembly on the wings and Chung and Henderson alternated up top with Schmidt and Carrieri. I am guessing Chung and Henderson played to get some work in at striker for future emergencies and to give them some game time while allowing younger guys to play the midfield. With this personnel, the Rapids still blasted the college team. For those of us on the Beckerman watch, there was this nugget from the coach:

“It’s important that we bring Gilles along at a pace that we feel he’s ready for,” said the Rapids’ coach. “It’s giving us an opportunity to play Kyle Beckerman quite a bit. We need Kyle to continue to grow and gain experience.”

OK, so my advance information was a little bit off. Man, how about that Casey Schmidt!

I did hear today that the coaching staff is very pleased at what they're seeing in the preseason, and that more than a few veterans on the team will have their work cut out for them to secure starting jobs. Apparently when Hankinson said "we've got 3-4 guys vying for every position" (in the recent press release) was no exaggeration.

Have been told that despite the finishing problems against the U20 club, Beckerman was very solid in the game and continues to be very impressive in the preseason.

Also confirmed that there is was not a typo in this bit of news posted by the Rapids:
Indeed there is a fellow named Brian Jackson who is currently on trial with the Rapids -- not to be confused with Danny Jackson.

Final note: learned that the proper pronounciation of Rizzo is "Rheet-zo." Whether his full name is Rizzo Bautista or Bautista Rizzo is apparently still a slight question mark. Seriously.

    OK, more clarifiation.

    - It's actually spelled Rizo

    - He's happy with pronouncing it "Rizzo" but if you want to be proper, go with "Rhee-soh"

    - As reported by the Rocky Mtn News, the Rapids expect to use a Discovery pick to acquire him

    - Rapids hope to make this official "any day now"
