MLS Rapids fall to Boulder Rapids Reserve

Colorado Springs, CO (05-13-03) – In an exhibition game played at Sand Creek Stadium in Colorado Springs, the Boulder Rapids Reserve defeated the Colorado Rapids in front of 1,004 fans.

Colorado used a different formation than had been used in the first four MLS contests, using Zizi Roberts as a fifth midfielder, and Pablo Mastroeni as the lone central defender.

The new formation started off good as the Rapids were able to spread the ball across the field with patience. The Rapids had the first chance on goal in the 5th minute of play, when a Matt Crawford cross from the right side was dummied by Wes Hart, back-healed by Chris Carrieri to Mark Chung, whose shot went wide left.

In the 15th minute, the Rapids were awarded a free kick outside the Reserve box. Chung’s shot bounced off the Reserve goalkeeper, and left Carrieri with only the goalie to beat. Reserve keeper Hutton was quick to get up and forced Carrieri to shoot high.

Twenty minutes later, the Reserve were awarded their own freekick outside the Rapids area, 15 yards from the right corner of the box. The cross was sent in, and as Rapids defender Stephen Herdsman jumped to clear the ball, goalkeeper Scott Garlick had taken a step in from the goal line. Herdsman’s header did not have enough to go over the goal and went in for an own goal.

The second half brought many changes to both line-ups. Former Reserve player and Pueblo, CO native Nat Borchers went in as an outside defender for the Rapids, and Seth Trembly replaced Chung in the middle of the park and immediately brought a spark to the game.

Ten minutes into the second half, Trembly re-directed a Crawford attempt but was easily saved. A few minutes later, Trembly sent a cross into the area, where a Reserve defender headed it back and barely over the goal.

Third-string goalkeeper Byron Foss entered the game for Garlick in the 60th minute, but was not challenged much.

Though the Rapids had the better of play in the game, the Reserve team took their time and maintained possession of the ball when they had it, satisfied with the 1-0 lead.

A late hand ball on the Reserve gave Trembly another chance at goal, but his freekick slammed into the Reserve wall.

"We've been struggling to get a win, so I wanted to go in a try to bring something positive to the game," said Trembly. "Our intentions going into the second half were to work hard and try to bring a spark, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough."

The PDL was established as an opportunity for college players to compete in a professional atmosphere without forfeiting their collegiate eligibility or amateur status…..The Reserve, who are directly affiliated with the Colorado Rapids, made it to the nationally televised finals of the PDL against the Cape Cod Crusaders. Even though they out-shot the Crusaders 25-3, the Boulder team lost the final 2-1. Current Rapids’ Casey Schmidt and Nat Borchers played in that game. Bochers played midfield for the Reserve and Schmidt scored the winning goal for the Crusaders……2002 Reserve players Todd Dunivant (San Jose Earthquakes), Jason Thompson (Dallas Burn), and Nate Jaqua (Chicago Fire) were all selected in the First Round of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft. Dunivant made his MLS debut against the Rapids on April 12, scoring what turned out to the winning goal.

    Uh...what's your problem?

This story is so old it's not even worth posting a thread about it.

OK, n00b... we appreciate your enthusiasm for the game and all, but chill out a bit with the new threads. Participate in existing discussions, but I would refrain from starting new threads until you get a handle on what each forum is really about.

    Oh, and welcome to BigSoccer.

Point taken. Is Big Soccer not the place to post old news. :)

Also, tell me what I posted that was in the wrong place. How can I truly learn without a teacher??

Well, week-old news about the Rapids in the general MLS forum. It's already been discussed, and it's probably better suited for the Rapids forum.

Anyway, that's just my advice, because it's what I do on a new forum. Sit in the corner, observe, and get a feel for the vibe. Then I contribute. Keeps me from looking the fool. :)

Not my forum. I just visit here. :)

I'm sure somebody will clean it up eventually, or it'll just float to the bottom.

If something floats, by definition, it's NOT on the bottom.

    Like Andy said... :)

It floats because there is gas trapped inside. That's why some of it floats while others sink.

I think it has to do with the gas.

It has to do with the Boulder Reserves.

    Don't ask me how.

Let's settle this once and for all: the only thing a Boulder can do is sink to the bottom, very rapidly.
