I'm going to listen to this radio show live for the first time this year and I'm going to to call in and ask Hankinson why we haven't had a consistant lineup all year. Maybe I won't get on and maybe I will but if there isn't at least ONE critical call taken on that show, I will never listen to it again. Because I know there are plenty of fans who have critical questions.
I'm surprised that the FO agreed to have Hankinson on the air. Unless they're doing some serious screening (Greenie - you've called, right? How much pre-screening do they do?), I don't imagine that the show will have the same softball questions that have been posed in the past.
I called in during the first show, and there really wasn't any pre-screening. They asked me something along the lines of why I was calling (I said "I've got a question for the coach") and then asked what my name was and how to spell it... then put me on hold for about 30-60 seconds and let me fire away. There is a delay and it seemed like it was a bit longer than the standard 7 seconds for censorship purposes.
Interesting... maybe they have a longer delay next week, just in case. "And now we go to... uh, a commercial... yeah, that's it. A commercial!"
They'll need more than 7 seconds to figure out if Spenny is cussing up a blue streak or just explaining his vision for the future of the team. I'm looking forward to listening on Tuesday. Curious what callers are going to ask about.
Seriously. I was pretty much convinced that the reason he went on air before the first game of the season was so that he wouldn't have to come back later on if stuff was hitting the fan. I gotta give him credit, though. If this radio show is worth anything at all, he should get grilled pretty hard and I think he knows that.
One, I'm not convinced that the radio show is worth anything from the types of softball questions they are taking. And... Two, I doubt Hanki thinks he should be getting grilled based on his "media and fans get off my back" statements in the paper.
More of the same old fluff. I'm curious on how many people waited on hold to ask some questions? I tried to get my questions in without any luck. Way to screen the email questions. No real tough questions were asked on that end. I thought Spenny and Kyle were good. Some nice comments from them. I think I'm done with the radio show. P.S. - I missed the first 10-13 minutes. Is that where the good questions came in?
If you count a young kid calling in to see what Kyle Beckerman eats on game day. I only heard the first 10 minutes or so and that was the first call. Hankinson also spent a few minutes addressing the lineup changes. Mostly, his comments were: 1 - The pre-season wasn't a good time to gel as a team because of the people out for injuries, Nats duty, and/or other issues (Grimandi). As a result, they've spent the early season trying to find that right chemistry. 2 - You stick with a lineup if it's winning. If it's not winning, you change it. That was about all I caught... I'll need to catch the rest on the web tomorrow.
*LOL* It's a good thing I stay away from radio! I'd be like Neil Kaas the Luton Town supporter from Fever Pitch...
Hankinson was only on the show for the first few minutes---maybe 15? Kyle was late showing up to the studio. The questions were not that challenging. I had never listened to this show before, and I can say I'm not a huge fan of the moderator. I was really listening for pearls of wisdom from Spenny, and here's what I took away: Spencer, who practices w/Kyle day in, day out, thinks Beckerman in the ***************, so I guess I won't write him off so quickly after all.
But that doesn't explain why he has been changing the lineups since he first got here. I mean, it's not as if this is something new but he tried to make it sound that way. I listened for about 10 minutes and that was enough.
Exactly. A better moderator/host would have followed up by saying that fans are necessarily complaining about changing the lineups; we're savvy enough to realize that that happens. But, why start a guy at right back (Crawford) with no MLS experience and no right back experience when Stewart is on the bench, and so on with Chung and Carrieri. Because that is what we are complaining about.
Hankinson did address the issue of ever-changing lineups a little further. He said the fans only see the games, but he sees every practice every day. Per Timbo, sometimes a player really gets on a hot streak during the week, and so he deserves to be started in the game based on that performance. Other tidbits from the show: Robin Fraser is the best golfer among the current Rapids, Wes Hart plays more golf than everybody else but isn't the best golfer, and Ross Paule is the best golfer the Rapids have probably ever had.
So is there somehwere to complain about this show? I mean seriously, golf questions 2 weeks in a row? Who cares? I know I don't. If this can't be a serious show that talks about real soccer issues than what's the point. I can find better discussions and information reading these baords in 1 hour than I have gotten from that show in 3 episodes.
One more thing to add. How many times do you think Keith Blyer inturupted a player in his short segment?
I liked it. Yeah it's all softball questions and all, but it's also just a nice way to get to hear guys like Spenny and Kyle.
