Tonight the Rapids Radio Broadcast Team of Keith Bleyer and Frank Kohlenstein will be joined in-studio by Rapids Team Captain John Spencer.

Also, in preparation for the Rapids’ May 10th away game in Columbus, Ohio, the Crew's Brian Maisonneuve and Jon Busch will also be available for your questions.

You can call in on the KNRC Studio Line at (303) 297-1510 starting at 7pm tonight. Tune into 1510am, or you can listen to the show online over the internet by clicking on the link to KNRC posted on www.coloradorapids.com

Last month's Rapids Radio show set a record number of callers into any of their shows! Get your questions ready, and remember to call in tonight!

I hope eveybody will listen and call in. This may be our best chance to get our frustrations out through the media (although very small audiance). It's a start.

    WTF?!

That was an hour of my life I would like back.

Why were we talking to players from Columbus for 20 minutes on the RAPIDS call-in show?

Some call-in show. I guess technically, since 4 callers actually got on the air, that makes it a call-in show.

    All fluff, no substance.

    Zizi on Defense

Loved how Hanki said that we may see Zizi playing defense on the pitch. Justification: Zizi played D on the national team.

The reason Zizi played D for Liberia? “On our national team, we had no defenders. Sometimes George Weah came to play in defense, and other times he goes to play up front, so I said no problem I’ll play in defense.”

Are you kidding me? If Mr. Hanki puts Zizi in the back after he has two goals this season Hanki should be fired. He is messing around too much with the lineup and should try to get something that works and stick with it. Included in "something that works" is putting players in their correct positions.

That probably means only 4 people actually called in.

    Clueless In Colorado

No, Hanki actually said that we might see Zizi playing defense :<

I was surprised and not surprised. Suprised Hanki is that clueless. Not surprised because it is par for the course.

By Hanki's logic, Pablo should be a striker. After all, Pablo played that position growing up.

    Stupid is as stupid does.

    Ughh

This show was a total waste from what I listened to.

What kind of Q&A is this? What is Busch and Mass going to say? "Yeah, we are thrilled that Vallow is getting starts, since he's played terribly"????

Who is there favorite soccer buddy?

Great...I will have a much better soccer experience during our next game when I think "well, we're terrible, but they really keep in touch with their old college roommates!"

I agree...the Rapids/1510 AM Radio owe me one hour.

Rapids Radio ... What a Waste of Time

The program is little more than a marketing program. Loved the "parents spend 100s of $$$ on soccer camps, they should take them to a home game to see how it's done."

Yes, take them to a home game so they can watch the Rapids have their arses handed to them like the Denver Nuggets.

Fans would be better served by having away games broadcast in English instead of fans having to listen to the game in Spanish.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the archive of last night's show yet -- I was out of town and not able to tune in via the web last night -- but one thing that is worth mentioning is that this really isn't a "call-in show" in the traditional talk-radio sense.

This is really a show that features some news on the Rapids, marketing fluff (which is fine), and the chance for people to call in and ask questions of the guests.

Give us a host that isn't a personal friend of the coach and a forum that allows fans to air whatever grievance or praise they like. Let the host offer his opinion/response and let other fans call in with their opinions/response.

Put a central, hot topic out there that will invite a range of opinions and give people a reason to tune in.

With the state of the team right now, the topics are easy:

    What's wrong with the Rapids?

Should Beckerman be a regular starter?

Who should be the starting forward pair?

Are Chung and Henderson better when forced to the wings or when used as "free" players?

What do you think of Grimandi's departure?

How much longer should the team give Hankinson to show progress?

I mean come on, just look at these boards and you've got a million topics. Clearly we've got a lot of people here that love to go back and forth on these topics, this could definitely be the kind of show where fans are happy to be on hold for a great length of time to put in their two cents' worth.

Similarly, it should be pointed out that when the show comes off as such a fluff piece and is clearly rah-rah-Rapids, people aren't going to feel comortable calling in and asking the questions they really want to dig in with. With Hankinson in the studio, how many people are really going to call in and grill him?

Finally, having guests from the opposing team, neither one being McBride? Stupid.

I agree with most of what you are saying, except...

I think that given a real format, people will grill the coach. I don't think people are as willing to grill the players (and even if you were, Vallow and "Stewie" - I thought I was watching Family Guy for a minute - are not the guys to grill). I think this goes along with our perception of coaches being much more disposable than the players. The coach is older and is always the first fallguy.

But Hankinson? Put him on for the entire show, and have a radio personality who is willing to ask some tough questions. I guess I am just used to New York sports radio, where some of the radio personalities are willing to slam the home team.

You CAN have a radio show that is pro-Rapids and relatively friendly and still ask the tough questions.

What is their dream (golf?) foursome? Come on.

    Huh?

Last week's game was on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain, in English... and I believe all the remaining games will be on either FSR or using one of the community access cable channels (also in English).

I'm not asking for coaches or players to be put out there for grilling; what I'm saying is that nobody wants to open up and nail the coach or players when they're sitting right there.

I'd just love to see a portion of the show which isn't so much the "ask the players" and more of a "what's your opinion."

Unfortunately, I don't think you can. Not yet. The Rapids are the ones forking over the money for this radio show, as well as for their TV broadcasts, newspaper inserts, streetpole banners, and everything else. Do you really think they're going to put out that amount of money just so people will bitch and moan.

And I hearken back to the fact that while Frank Kohlstein is a better host than I expected he'd be, he's a friend of Hankinson's and a longtime friend of the team.

The only truly effective host will be an objective one that isn't busy kissing someone's butt or worried about staying in their good graces. No direct offense to Frank intended, but if you want the fans to call in with the tough questions, it's got to start with the host.

Fox Sports Rocky Mountain is cable, right? Not everyone that follows the Rapids is a cable viewer.

You are right, Greenie...I guess what I meant was that such a show *could* exist (civil but critical sports talk where we ask what went wrong without degenerating into a "you suck" shouting match - save that for politics ;-).

But yeah, if the Rapids are footing the bill for this (wasn't sure about that), then this will be a friendly game of wiffle ball on the radio.

By the way, I think the streetpole banners that you mention are great (if anyone in the Rapids organization is paying attention to this). I especially like how they targeted areas around other sporting venues - Coors Field and Pepsi come to mind.

    Shattered illusions

This is what I was expecting to hear, the fluff just caught me off guard. I hope it will evolve into a true call-in format someday. For now, I'll retract my statement, except for the why were we listening to "Mais" and Busch for 20 minutes. Still can't figure that one out.

Anyone for getting Jim Rome to host it? [ducking and covering :p]

True, but it would be hard to follow any sort of soccer without having at least a basic cable package. It's not like the local (over-the-air) channels are going to go out and broadcast Saturday evening Rapids away games.

http://www.socceraudio.com is an alternative to cable. They have a link for FoxSportsNetwork Radio but I've never got it to work. Streaming for the Rapids home games works but I don't use it because I'm at the games.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Rapids Radio ... What a Waste of Time

It's cool that there's a resource out there like that, but I have a hard time "listening" to soccer. The times I've tried have been webcasts for a mid-week game that happened during business hours. Maybe it depends on the play-by-play, but I have a hard time visualizing plays come together based on a radio broadcast.

Anyway, if you really enjoy the game, the $49 offer for the MLS Shootout package is hard to beat. Granted, it means having either Dish, DirecTV, or AT&T/Comcast digital cable, but it's something like $.35 a game if you have it all season. Then there's ESPN2, which has been showing UEFA games... and the soccer orgy that is Fox Sports World. Between those three offerings, there's no shortage of broadcasts to catch.

But you're right... with just regular rabbit-ears style TV, it's gonna be tough to find any games, let alone games in English.
