With my Kindle Unlimited I get a magazine called BBC History. The latest copy has an article about Samuel Pepys. The name probably rings a vague bell for you…he’s a famous diarist from mid 17th century England. Anyway, the article is about how he would use sexual coercion from his government job, and he also treated his servants as kind of a harem. Maybe I’m naive but I’m genuinely surprised. I’ll bet there’s a book or books out there that study the phenomenon of men getting off via coercion, across history and various cultures. I’m not sure if I’d want to read the book because the details would upset me. Maybe I’d just read the summary parts, and skip the evidence buttressing those summaries.
I had no idea who Pepys was, so I gave a look over his wiki entry. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Pepys Much of Pepys' behavior towards women, which he cataloged himself in his diary, would today be considered sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape.[44] Despite his kindness and emotional loyalty towards some women in his life, Pepys ultimately believed men were entitled to the bodies of girls and women. Kate Loveman of Cambridge University describes this belief: "[In his diary] Pepys's sexual language of being 'kind', 'touching', and 'tumbling' emphasized his indulgence and playfulness, while masking coercion and violence; meanwhile, [his victim] Lane's claims of assault he regarded as exemplifying a woman's 'falseness', not because he thought there had been no violence, but because she had no moral right to protest."[44] That source is from 2022, so not brand new. That said, seems like one would have had to be paying attention to his life to know this.
https://www.ksl.com/article/5135990...s-he-influenced-new-law-to-help-granddaughter More context provided. Italics are direct quotes. Stuart Adam’s grandDAUGHTER was the 18yr-old in question. 2 instances where she raped a 13yr-old boy. Arrested at High School, served 8 days in jail, and 500+days house arrest with ankle monitor. Adams' granddaughter eventually pleaded guilty to a second-degree felony and three counts of sexual battery, a class A misdemeanor, with a $1,500 fine, four years of probation and 120 hours of community service. Insanely, Utah’s age of consent is 14!!! (This probably has roots in Joseph Smith and Brigham Young marrying 14yr-olds.) The law was not designed to be retroactive, but the new law was cited when the plea deal and reduced sentence were given. She was charged as an adult with four first degree felonies: two counts of child rape and two counts of child sodomy, which usually require someone convicted to register as a sex offender and serve time in prison. The typical sentence for such convictions is 25 years to life in prison, although judges have discretion to impose shorter sentences of as little as six years to life in prison. Exceptions could also be made granting probation to first-time offenders who met other criteria. A 17yr-old would be charged with 3rd degree felonies.
It is also pointed out that the policy is generally well-accepted. I don’t know if anyone is arguing against the new law, just that the timing really does appear absolutely self-serving. But at the same time, it is an often observed phenomenon that “Conservatives” only do the right thing for others when they themselves are directly affected. I’m having a hard time thinking how else our GOP would ever have considered this change in the law. The other part being that it was an 18yr-old woman/girl raping a 13yr-old boy is quoted as being “a silly mistake.” If she had raped a 13yr-old girl, or the genders were reversed, this conversation would likely be completely different.
Something that got millions of views with mostly positive reactions, but also critical ones: https://www.tiktok.com/@dutchcrimenews.nl/video/7541822280209321249?q=dionne A remarkable video from a sports club at Oud Gastel has attracted 2.8 million views on TikTok in a short time. It shows how a woman asks a policewoman on horseback if she can 'pet', but then jokingly strokes the woman instead of the animal. In addition to a lot of hilarity, there are also critical reactions, but the video is not what it seems. https://www.ad.nl/show/vrouw-vraagt...been-video-trekt-2-8-miljoen-views~ae251f99f/
Diddy being sentenced today. Prosecutors asking for 11 years. Defense asking for time served. Defense saying Diddy can do good if released, and other such crap...Oh, now seeing Diddy is a civil rights leader. (Watching the AP live feed.)
Diddy sentenced https://apnews.com/article/sean-diddy-combs-sentencing-cba3743249028d9a8b88f2ac07d6e323 4 years, 2 months, $500,000. Unacceptable, even considering that this is his first conviction (I think). He's already served something like 13 months.
Add Sean Combs to the list of wealthy defendants who get a slap on the wrist or nothing at all. Sick.
This story/crime harkens back to a time we discussed a similar story/crime with disgust and anger. And it used the Nassar method to boot. https://apnews.com/article/teacher-rhode-island-fat-pinching-2c6c6f8fff2fb188490fca22721f418d A Rhode Island judge on Monday sentenced a former high school basketball coach to a year of probation after he spent decades asking hundreds of male student-athletes if they were “shy or not shy” before asking them to get naked so he could check their body fat. Earlier this year, a jury found Aaron Thomas not guilty of second-degree child molestation and second-degree sexual assault in a case that scrutinized the so-called naked fat tests conducted by the once-beloved coach at North Kingstown High School. Instead, Thomas was found guilty of a lesser charge, two counts of misdemeanor battery. Why the not guilty? Throughout the nearly six-week trial, defense attorneys for Thomas argued the tests were wrong but not a crime. The defense said Thomas didn’t touch the boy athletes for sexual gratification or arousal, a key requirement under the charges he faced. But it really wasn't that bad, was it? During his testimony, Thomas told the jury that he likely saw more than 600 students throughout his career, with “roughly 80%” of them taking their underwear off during the test. The tests involved Thomas pinching various areas of their bodies, including near the groin and buttocks. The tests were conducted behind closed doors, first in a small closet-like room and then eventually in Thomas’ office.
https://cchelmetgirl.substack.com/p...n-blogging?manualredirect=&triedRedirect=true Thought this was worthwhile to post here, a trans woman's account of an transphobic attack. I actually almost posted this in the Trump topic since it is hard to see this entirely separate from the climate MAGA has created for the LGBTQ community. Something she herself alludes to in her write-up.
I know I’ve pitched this book before, but Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl will leave you deeply, deeply conflicted and confused about the meaning of consent in the past. It’s as alien to us today as any species dreamed up in Star Trek or The Orville.
Truly bizarre ruling. The chance that this guy won't victimize any more women seems rather unlikely. https://nypost.com/2025/10/22/us-ne...ape-conviction-sparking-outrage-from-parents/
It is no exaggeration to say that the fact this "man" is a hero to millions of boys and young men all over the world is deeply terrifying and disturbing.
On that note, since JK Rowling came out in support of Megyn Kelly's transphobic comments not that long ago, has she given her opinion on Kelly's "it's not really rape if the girl is 15" comments? No? CIS men can rape girls?
Veronica Clifford-Carlos with her lawyer Inge Zuidhoek in court, where her rejected asylum request is being processed. © ANP / ANP Rejection of asylum application of trans woman from US was justified, Dutch court rules An American trans woman who applied for asylum in the Netherlands was rightly not granted it, the court ruled. "The situation for trans people in the US has deteriorated," the judge said. But that does not mean that the woman in question can receive refugee status. The woman is a citizen of the United States. She applied for asylum in the Netherlands because she has to deal with discrimination in her own country. But according to the judge, it is not the case that trans people in the US 'systematically do not have access to facilities'. The court also does not see that the authorities in the country do not want or cannot protect trans people at all. Therefore, trans women are generally not eligible for asylum. The woman in question has not been able to demonstrate that her situation is different. She has been called names and discriminated against in the US. "But as regrettable as this is for her, it is not enough to qualify for an asylum permit," said the judge. List of safe countries When the woman's case was already ongoing, the use of the list of 'safe countries' was stopped. The Ministry of Asylum and Migration had also included in the decision about the woman that the US was on that list. Because this is now outdated, the minister of the court must officially make a new decision about the woman.
Huh? What are you talking about??? Are you making stuff up or has there been some big news story I missed? Link please
300K kids married 2000-2018 https://www.unchainedatlast.org/united-states-child-marriage-problem-study-findings-april-2021/
I personally know four women who married while in HS and all but one married men much older than themselves. All were white, and none got beyond a GED.
This adds important context (bold is mine) Nearly 300,000 minors, under age 18, were legally married in the U.S. between 2000 and 2018, this study found. A few were as young as 10, though nearly all were age 16 or 17. Most were girls wed to adult men an average of four years older.
