I'm skeptical about the "causing Mertesacker to leave" part. Everything I've read is that Per has always wanted a higher role at some club in the future.
Ehhh This is the same guy that was on Arsenal Vision a few weeks ago who said Per always wanted to have a higher up role. That tweet, imo, does not read as it caused Per to leave as a force out, but that the academy was doing something different and Per may have saw this as the opportunity to exit.
Fair. I didn't recognize his username in your post, but I did listen to that episode of the AV. I thought it was informative and hope that Elliot has him on more often as he indicated they'd try to do.
Very interesting interview. I write the following based on my understanding of the facts. It's possible I got it wrong but its from various sources in the media over the years. The best thing to happen to Arsenal was David Dein, the worse thing to happen to Arsenal was David Dein. I took us dragging and kicking into the modern era. He was without question the most important member of the board. However, he went behind the club's back and talked to Kroenke into buying into the club including giving Kroenke an advantage. . And after he was kicked out of the club because he went behind the clubs back surreptitiously, he then worsen things by bringing Usmanov in. This interview is possible some revisionist history on his part. The board isn't going to unanimously kick you out without reason.
A couple things from the interview I agree with. 18 clubs instead of 20. Less games, more money. Other leagues such as the Bundesliga have gone down to 18 clubs.

Other than city, we’ve only been behind for 120-odd minutes in the league, and from memory it seems like we’ve equalized pretty quickly most times we’ve trailed. Not disagreeing with the underlying premise, though the takeaway for me is that Arsenal could probably attack more without sacrificing defensive flexibility.
The scars of City blitzing through our midfield and running at Rob Holding will take a bit to heal. But maybe, slowly, they are.

Got back this week from 2 weeks in India (Rajasthan mostly) and I sported my arsenal cap every day, which in most places in the world would mean I'd strike up some convos with fellow gooners or just footy fans in general. But the closest thing I got to Arsenal were these... Perhaps in other Indian regions it'd been different. In fact in Raj, I barely even noticed much signs of cricket... maybe it's just not a big sporting state, other than perhaps polo! In fact, it wasn't until my very last hour in the country, when we pit-stopped in Delhi before our flight home, that I saw my first and only evidence... Needless to say I did NOT wake him up to chat.

I saw a post that said if Brazil wins the World Cup and Arsenal wins the Champions League, big Gabi should be considered for the Ballon D’or. It got me thinking. To me, there would be a case to be made.
His true candidacy would depend on his goal contributions. If he bags a couple more goals in key matches for club and country, he should definitely get consideration.
