I was at the game, so the clip is in my head. Sorry. Good for me though. That was the greatest game I've ever been too. Amazing atmosphere. I always wonder why we never get the MNT back up here. Scumby
Was that a scorching worm burner that snuck inside the post? Aside: since we had such a difficult time finding a forward in '98, I though we should put Ramos up top w/ someone else. Yes, his fitness was an issue, but up top he wouldn't have to run so much. He could have been a guy who could: hold the ball up top under pressure; beat a guy off the dribble to create his own shot or feed someone. Iow, he could have been a Clint Dempsey type forward for us. Even if he just played at 75%.
Yeah, I was there too. Feed from Preki, I think. Memorable also for one of the first appearances of the Thunderstick.
Yeah in Portland. I can remember it clearly. They put real grass down over turf so they slipped around a lot. Wegerle started up top with Lassiter I think. We couldn't score or do much of anything until Preki laid a perfect ball off to Ramos who buried it. Unfortunetly Ramos got reinjured after the game and barely played a meaningful game with the Nats after. Sorry, no clip though.
I thought Balboa made the final lay off for Ramos to run onto. Maybe I'm thinking of a different goal. Anyway, doesn't matter. Would love to see the clip, though.

my memory is that Preki did a cut back on the right wing and played it into the middle and someone (may have been Balboa) did lay it back for Ramos.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9906E7DF1639F93BA3575AC0A961958260 Ramos Lifts U.S. Team In Qualifier For Cup By LAWRIE MIFFLIN Published: September 8, 1997 --------- ''I don't remember ever feeling happier after a goal,'' said Ramos, the 30-year-old midfielder who also plays for the MetroStars in Major League Soccer. ''I'm not one to celebrate and run around a lot after a goal, but today I was a maniac out there. I haven't been in a game with this kind of atmosphere in a long time, and I wanted to win so badly.'' The sellout crowd of 27,396 kept up a thunderous din of support for the American team for almost the entire 90 minutes, and after Ramos scored, the noise, amplified by fireworks, went off the decibel chart. --------- --------- Ramos's goal began with a dazzling bit of deking on the right side on the penalty area by Preki Radosavljevic, who then sent a pass toward the goal that deflected out toward Marcelo Balboa, just inside the area. Balboa had not room or time to turn on the ball and shoot, so he quickly touched the ball back to the onrushing Ramos, about 22 yards out. ''He gave me a perfect lay-back pass,'' Ramos said. ''I had about a third of the net open to shoot at, and fortunately I hit it.'' --------
the pic of him celebrating appeared on the cover of a magazine.... i had it blown up, autographed and framed. still on my wall today. just emailed ussoccer to see if they could post it on youtube or something.
It was Bob Ley. Jack Edwards was part of the '01 '02 cycle. The latest from Jack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRTF9F31ezY
Jack's a good hockey announcer-heard him call a game on Versus earlier this week. Great memories and rep to anyone who can put upa clip.
Because you asked for it, here it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3NRNAFDuws If you enjoyed that, check out my youtube profile, and/or check out my collection of US Soccer matches at the URL in my signature.
Do you have these matches in electronic format? What a collection! I'd love to get a look at the BBC broadcast of the US beating Portugal in 2002...
That was Bob Ley and Seamus Malin on the call......sigh! Why can't we get those two back calling Nats games again? Sorry, Great goal!!
Nice clip. You've been repped. I've still got a nice little notch in my shin bone from when I jumped off the couch and nailed the edge of the coffee table.
How far we've come. It was just trying to stay in the game with the concacaf teams. It was maybe 15 players we could count on. Bora? Sampson? It used to piss me off losing to Mexico in those chippy games. I was at the US vs Costa Rica win in Stanford in '95. That got us through to the WC. I love having guys in Europe. I love having discussions about who is coming to camp. We have depth. We have potential. Our teenagers beat Brazil. There were a thousand people there. Freddy Adu!! Dempsey. I can't wait for the qualifying to begin. I love beating concacaf teams. I love playing Euro snobs and kicking their butt. I know they don't like coming here anymore. It used to be like a field trip with shopping and site seeing. No more. Beating Portugal...good times. JOB fullfilling his promise. McHead. Now we just need a field and a winning team in NYC.
the only thing i had forgotten (and what that clip reminded me of) was how big of a dork Steve Sampson was.
