Zak Whitbread 53 min in Shrewsbury Town's 1-0 win vs Jon-Paul Pittman's Grimsby Town (2nd Rd FA Cup replay). Both players left w/ injuries.— Roderick MacNeil (@rodmacneil) December 15, 2015
Whitbread went 90 min for Shrewsbury yesterday in 2-1 victory. They're in 17th place in League One. http://us.soccerway.com/players/zak-whitbread/51000/ He becomes a free agent in January, since he only signed a short-term deal. http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/34551130
His contract actually expires Jan. 1. Shrewsbury wants to extend, but he's too expensive for them. http://thefl72.com/2015/12/22/shrewsbury-town-keen-keep-defensive-duo/
Zak scored his first goal in over two years today... but it came in a 7-1 loss to Chesterfield. Yikes!
Scored with left footed shot (no surprise there) from close range to top right hand corner in 66'. From ESPN write-up they didn't call him out on any of the goals for whatever thats worth though not much detail; he for sure didn't cause the 2 penalties. Fellow Yank Gboly Ariyibi started and went 84' for Chesterfield and had an assist and drew the 2nd penalty that caused the red card in the 81'. http://www.espnfc.us/english-league-one/match/424030/chesterfield-shrewsbury-town/report
Snip: Zak Whitbread has signed a contract with Shrewsbury Town until the end of the season - but defensive cohort Anthony Gerrard has been released. http://www.shropshirestar.com/sport...01/21/anthony-gerrard-town-are-not-panicking/ Anthony is apparently Steven's cousin.
Snip: Shrewsbury defender Zak Whitbread has hailed the character demonstrated by the side after Town’s 3-2 win over relegations rivals Blackpool. ... The American born 31 year old said: “We showed great character there at the end (to hold onto the win) they (Blackpool) chucked everything including the kitchen sink at us, and I thought we showed real character to see it out.” http://www.shropshirelive.com/2016/...ises-the-teams-character-after-blackpool-win/
Good for ol' Zak. That man has had a great career compared to the vast majority of professional footballers. I know he's been hither and yon and had some speedbumps in his way, but here he is at 31 years of age still doing it and getting paid to do it. Keep it up Zak!
Snip: The defender – once a mascot at Old Trafford – was clubless for five months from May after an injury-prone spell with Derby in the Championship ended when his contract ran out. Despite playing in the top-flight in the 2011-2012 season when he helped promoted Norwich stay up, Whitbread had no decent offers. The 31-year-old admits training on his own was soul-destroying and could have driven less motivated players to quit, while some offers from lower league teams were so low he could have earned more painting and decorating. http://www.irishmirror.ie/sport/soccer/soccer-news/shrewsburys-zak-whitbread-gone-footballs-7413557

Released by Shrewsbury Town: http://ussocceracrossthepond.blogspot.com/2016/05/contracts-zak-whitbread-released-by.html?spref=tw
http://ussocceracrossthepond.blogspot.com/2016/05/contracts-zak-whitbread-released-by.html?spref=tw Zak represented the USA twice in the senior squad and 6 times at the U20 level. He did however 'represent' twice, I guess getting your name on the squad list counts for something. I really gotta wonder if he's at the end of the line at 32. Maybe he goes to MLS for a year or two?
That article is wrong. Whitbread is uncapped by the US at the senior level. Bob Bradley once called him up to a camp in 2011, but he had to withdraw because of injury. (Not exactly a surprise, given his career.)
Agree article is wrong, or the author has a new stat called 'represent' as in, being named to a preliminary roster, whether you appear or not.
He would definitely have to trial with somebody and even then it might be an uphill battle. 32 years old and was just released by a League One club. Stranger things have happened for sure, but he may find himself getting lowballed or not getting an offer at all.
yeah, he's an oft-injured 32 year-old who has mostly never lived in the US and was just released by a League One team. not saying he couldn't hack it in MLS, but it's not exactly likely. he's really no different than any other early-30s, oft-injured non-PL defender to an MLS team.
You could imagine someone of his background going to Miami FC, with all the money they're throwing around right now.
