Hi I'm a student doing an essay on Racism in Football, particularly in the Premiership and Division 1.

I would like as many of you as possible to tell me about the following:

a - any experiences of racism at matches.
b - your views on racism in the game (i.e. do you think it does still exist? and in what capacity?)
c - what can be done to combat it.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

I am particularly interested in hearing from fans of Everton, Man City, Millwall and Palace (these are the clubs the author of the book I am reading has focused on). But, of course, will welcome comments from fans of any club.

    Thanks for your help.

    a) I once heard someone (a not particularly bright or articulate guy) say "..their fans were dreadful, really racist towards our darkies.."
Now is that guy racist or not?

    b) Racism in football is the same as racism in general in society. Nobody is suddenly going to change their views because they are watching a football match.

    c) similar to b, racism/prejudice/ignorance will only diminish at the same rate that it disappears in society as a whole. It's only more noticeable at football because fans are more hyped-up and emotional than they'd generally be most of the time, and when people are angry, social conventions are less likely to be adhered to.

  3. I was at a game v Birmingham a few yrs ago, this gimp next to me, in fact he was a limp gimp cos his leg was ************ed and his arm didn't work, started his usual crap of '****************** this', ****************** that', despite our team having black players and having a black guy behind him, every game he'd do it but i'd had enough on this day so i reported him to a steward, i was only about 15, 16, if it'd happened now i'd have ************ed up his other leg but anyway, the steward went and had a word and that was it. I was surprised he never threw the twat out as i thought it was the policy so i thought '************ this' either he goes or i do but the steward did nothing si walked out. The bastard made me miss the only goal, we won 1-0.

Next game i took my seat next to him and he said nothing all game.

Football was fine until all those wooden spoons joined in. We can do without their kind, damn them. Seriously, imagine Arsenal without Veira, Henry, Campbell, Cole, Lauren, Wiltord, Edu, Da Silva.............Exactly! Spurs would be above them! Er, or maybe not.

Ken Bates and David Dein were moaning about Spurs fans turning an intended insult into a nickname.

'How can we stop our own fans from doing it,' dribbled Ken Bates, 'when their own fans call themselves 'The Yids?'

'Frankly, I find it offensive,' ejaculated David Dein, 'Spurs ought to do something about it!'

Is it offensive (in your opinion) that the large Jewish contingent that follow Spurs, have turned an intended insult into a badge of identity? Is it racist for Spurs fans to call themselves yids? Is it racist for rival fans to call Spurs fans yids?

Is it racist for a white to call a black a '******************' but not a black?

    Plenty.
During the 80's CFC had some very violent people who went to matches and one of their prefered ways to get at another set of lads was to insult them.
Now, if you were a paki or some such fella and where there you were going to get an ear full.
The culture of the game at the time was very clanish.I mean that in the monkee see monkee do type of way.
Quite a few people that would normally never even think of uttering such insults became quite loud when in the presence of these types.
They were often some of the first to be at the front of a crowd in a row-so long as it was ten on one.

It was what happened at games. It had been going on for decades--the right or wrong of it was not considered to be importent by these lads.

I was white, skin-headed and done out in denim and docs.It was almost expected of me to be involved and dressed like that you ran the risk of aggro whether you were or not.
I got nicked in Norwich in '83 for just those reasons.
They later released me when they found out i was in the army and due to go back to Belfast the following week.Otherwise i would have a "folder" of my own ;)

b - your views on racism in the game (i.e. do you think it does still exist? and in what capacity?)
Yes, it does exist and quite possibly will always be around.
Just as poverty and famine will be.
There can be measures taken to minimise it-but in all likelyhood none will eradicate it.

c - what can be done to combat it.
Short of kicking out the people who utter any words that are deemed racist--nothing.
One can go to great lengths to ban all banners and flags and such like stuff, but when some fella that is pissed off at Hasselbaink as he scores the winning goal in the 91st min and calls him a no-good-****er, really, what can you do?

Sorry, call me a cynic if you like and I feel really antagonistic towards people like you.

It’s your first post in BS. You’re not up to saying where you’re from. Or even if you know anything at all about our sport.

An awful lot like the geek a couple of weeks ago who had to write a paper on “Football violence” for some US high school.

So he came in here, just like you with pre-conceived ideas that, “if you want to know all that’s wrong in the world” Go to the football crowd first, they’re all violent racists, you’ll get you answers there.

RichardL gave you your answer: Racism in football is the same as racism in general in society. Nobody is suddenly going to change their views because they are watching a football match.

No go away and write a paper on “Why do people dislike me just because I’m rude and don’t think and don’t understand human interaction”

At Everton I never heard any racism - it would get shouted down by others anyway. There was racism at times on the coach on the way to the games, but not at the ground.

i'm an everton fan that sits in the lower gladys street...the "hardcore" end for those that aren't well-up on everton.

personally, i have never used a racist insult in my life, either at a match or in the rest of society; i do hear "racist" chants almost every week at the match tho. i think this needs qualifying tho. the "racism" i hear at everton is generally the sort: "oh, get up, you cheating black bastard!!"; when a black player dives for a penalty, say. personally, i DO NOT count this as racism at all. just like i don't count shouting at rooney "you fat bastard" a fat-ist comment. where's the difference?

everyone carries a cross of sorts when they're a footballer. if michael owen falls over, he's a "scrawny bastard" or he's a "welsh bastard"; if carragher falls over he's a "cokehead"; if heskey falls over he's a "black bastard". that's just the way it is. it's an easy jibe...you do need an adjective after all (!!!!). that's not racism in my book.

i think racism in when a certain player is picked out because of his skin colour or racial background. continually getting booed or having to endure persistent name-calling (in same cases, animal noises) is not on. for the most part, that's been eradicated in england in my opinion...certainly at everton.

Everton do a fine line in racism. As evidenced by their spat with Fulham last season, their attacks on Muzzy Izzet after the Leeds/Galatasaray events of a couple of seasons ago and their chanting of "you're just a town full of pakis" at places like Leicester, Bradford, Leeds, any Brum ground and any London ground.

    "The People's club", apparently.

    Makes sense, Davey ...

but liverpool fans aren't ever involved in racial slurs? do me a favour.

sounds like you've got a bit of a chip on your shoulder here...

care to explain the relevance of that story within this thread?

Wigan fans enjoy referring to Bolton as a 'town full of pakis'. Rather pakis than egg-chasing chavs.

Wigan's practically one big council estate anyway. It's only the outskirts that are raised above dole scrounging scum, and those people support the more established football teams.
