Nope, not problem at all with Trump, Pompeo, etc. calling it the "Chinese Virus" or the "Wuhan Virus."

I got into this with the guys at work after the El Paso shooting. The shooter went to kill Mexicans who were endangering our country, using Trump's own language, and with MAGA stuff on his computer. Nope I was being "ridiculous" for suggesting that Trump's rhetoric helped to encourage the shooting.

 

So he has a pensioner drinking fish tank cleaner and now a family stabbed. Not sure what his Being a Fcking Dangeorus Dumbass death count is up to now after 3 years.

 

He is trying to get to "Killary" numbers before the convention...

 

It's hard to think of an American politician who has had less empathy. Nearly all can at least fake it.

Maybe it's wishful thinking but I think that after all this, I can see libertarianism dive even deeper into obscurity (it's already been on the decline in the Trump era).

All of a sudden the "nanny state" truly is the one institution with the capacity to save lives and ease suffering. Many businesses have shown their ugliest sides, asking employees to keep working, asking for donations, etc.

Turns out, the mighty market has absolutely zero answers in times like this.

At the same time, I can see right-wing isolationism and xenophobia picking up more steam. "See, if we had tighter borders, this virus wouldn't have entered our country!"

 

Well its selfishness helped get us into this mess and it has zero solutions to get us out. So let's hope you're correct.

 

Speaking of which, what happened to all that support for the balanced budget amendment? Every one of those politicians should have been on the Congressional floor bitterly opposing the stimulus bill, supported by millions of voters urging them to vote No.

It is so, so hard to find anything that the Tea Party believed in, besides defeat Democrats, especially tanned ones.

But I just spent a year teaching middle school in a "diverse" community, and I've learned so much about racism and boy oh boy is this country ********ed. I mean, even more than it already is.

Depends on how you want to define political conservatism & political libertarianism over the last 50 years, because the two are inexorably intertwined and use each other to unbalance opposition to their goals, helped also by political evangelical Dominionist Christianity.

Conservatives want a weak federal government that is strong on National Defense & Military Force, because it needs that to continue to allow corporations to extract resources from the countries in the Global South, the Middle East & Central / West Asia. Conservatives need a "Them" to be against, that involves "furriners", "illegal immigrants" and "uppity urban coloreds"... though the latter two are welcome to be a part of the military and give their blood for the "country"

Dominionist Christians want a weak federal government that does little more than protect them or establish their faith as the prime and only religion and moral arbiter. They are happy to have minority Christians along for the ride as long as they know their separate status and there is no miscegenation...

Libertarians just want a weak to non-existent federal government. A return to the heady days of expansion into the west. The Feds & their army / police (RCMP in the case of the Leafs) are only there to control or eradicate any threats (minorities) to their extraction or exploitative actions such as suppression of labor organizing, environmental damage to land and by extension, the residents...

In all of these, there's a veneer of "we're not racist, if we are, it's only a marginal few", but they're all along for the ride and have the belief that their individualism and lack of restriction on them will insulate them from anything...

Except now, the market isn't responding, because a virus can't be bought off with money, it doesn't care about your faith and it doesn't care about national pride or security or making money - it simply wants to replicate to the next adjacent cell

 

Knowledge is good no matter when it hits. Can you be more specific? I don't expect to learn anything new (I've already taught in diverse and non-diverse schools), but I'm interested in what you encountered.

 

I keep hearing this so perhaps you authoritarians can explain, how is the market not responding to the crisis? Everywhere I look I see examples, big and small, of the private sector switching production and stepping up, from large auto makers producing ventilators to small micro distillers switching from craft vodka to hand sanitizers. Pharmaceuticals are donating hydroxychloroquine and other drugs while at the same time searching for vaccine. In fact, most of the initial mistakes in handling this pandemic, as well as a lot of the misinformation, have come from the public sector and government agencies around the world. The first and foremost being China, where the virus originated and was unleashed on all the world.
