The FBI has been urged to get involved.

Racist? Well, the initial reports show no sign of an attack and a white person was also found in a nearby tree. The two bodies seem to be not connected, but Mississippi has a racist history.

It seems too easy to ignore this story or chalk it up to "person undergoing a mental crisis commits suicide" especially in a country where the question isn't "when will the school shootings stop" but "when will the next school shooting be and how many people will die?"

I want to talk for a moment about Platner. Everyone online is coming after him now, and one critique I saw is that he got a grant to start his business, and the grant was intended for POCs.

It’s not actually true though; the grant was for people lacking access to capital, yes, but in addition to being targeted to firms owned by women and POCs, the grant also privileges veterans. So what he did was perfectly legal; as to whether it was moral and/or ethical, that would depend on one’s values.

But here’s the interesting point…if you’ve worked in these areas, that’s just standard, to add veterans to legitimately underprivileged groups like women, religious minorities, etc etc etc. This is on top of all the privileges veterans can access through the DOD.

We are inching ever closer to the Starship Troopers model of citizenship.

Our society doesn’t need more people willing to carry guns. We need more people willing to work in, and invest in, poor communities. Politically it’s impossible, much like how we need to redefine farming states as welfare hogs, but it would be good for America if we considered which of those privileges veterans really should have, and which of them are just benefiting one class of society over others. And then work to eliminate those which are given unthinkingly to veterans.

 

On the other hand, there's a lot of homeless veterans, because they get messed up by being sent to shithole countries to kill brown people and then those skills do not translate very well when they return to the US.

We'll know when veterans are truly privileged when rich families start sending their kids to sign up. Your kids didn't join up, did they? My kid sure didn't. Who was the last President's kid to join the military? Aside from Beau Biden, I don't know how far back you have to go to find a Presidential family that had their kids join up. Eisenhower? It's kind of laughable to think of Jenna Bush or Sasha Obama or Barron Trump joining the military.

 

Something that contributes to this is that despite gains the armed forces isn't too inviting to women and there were 3 presidents in a row that had no boys.
