For a "white flight" in naming there must be some weird awareness of names being used in a community/social stratum/residential_racially defined areas. How does this come about? Is someone tallying that in a certain way or are these numbers released by way of the segregative set up of your census by race? We Dutch have no way to know what names are in use by any group, because of the dumping of those racial/ethnical/religious/political information after the nazi hords used our perfect census to hunt down people they wanted to exterminate. Can't imagine in the UK etc. this "white flight" in naming occurs too.
I'm going to give you a bit of advice that sometimes even the decent Whites are morally incapable of adhering to without consulting their own tainted experiences and psyches. Just trust the American POCs you read here* on this. We're the ones getting run from. *except ceezmad, he's Whiter than the rest of us
Not only was there a Maynard G Krebs on the 3 hour tour but also Thurston Howell III and his wife Lovey. Ps...Who can forget Ginger and "All day All night" Mary Ann!
This is a rather complicated pair of questions. Regarding the first, there is a level of assimilation that occurs, but how and why and by whom and for what purpose is very, very complicated. It also gets into education, region of the US, socio-economic status, profession of parents, political leanings, etc, all or in parts. Regarding the second question, we identify race for a number of reasons. Unlink most countries, particularly in Europe, we have a federal (dual governing) system of national laws and state laws. Historically, states have passed many racist laws, mostly intentionally but not always, and getting the data from the census on race is one way our national government has been able to prove discrimination. But, again, it is very, very complicated. Quite the opposite, here. We have had Nazis (think KKK/White Supremacists) in government here since the beginning. We have used the racial/ethnic/religious data to try and reduce the acts of those people. But, then, we have Trump so the danger has grown. Names everywhere change. There are some which become more popular or less popular over time for any number of reasons. But, I would suspect that a form of "White flight" in names does exist in the UK. Probably not to the extent it does in the US, but likely.
That's been happening for decades and it's happening in Europe as well. Low paying, blue collar service jobs like restaurant work, cleaning, babysitting, retail, construction, etc., are fast becoming nonwhite jobs. Especially in big cities. Poor, white, urban neighborhoods don't really exist in the US anymore. The few poor whites that live in big cities live in majority Black or Latino neighborhoods. The rural areas are a different story.

It's not criticism. It is that as you try to understand American Sociology and culture, just remember that PoC and our interpretation of things is usually more accurate than white Americans.
Virginia school district makes U-turn on Confederate names (msn.com) Well, doing right by the USA didn't last long, did it? School districts starting to return to honoring the magnolia and burning flesh-scented recent past. Cross posted in the Education thread.
What the ********..... Seriously Virginia? Reading the article, I found this gem from a white dude (obviously) supporting the name change back. The amount of self delusion is pretty stunning. One of the people leading the charge to restore the schools' names is Mike Scheibe, a father of two students at Ashby Lee and Civil War re-enactor, who is also the spokesperson for the Coalition for Better Schools, a local organisation that campaigned for the school board to change the names back. "When I look at Robert E Lee, the comparisons to him and George Washington are immense," he said, noting Washington also owned slaves. "I wonder when George Washington's name and things like that will then have to come off of things." "But to be taught that everyone who fought for the Confederacy, or did this, or did that, is a racist slave holder, that's all or nothing, and that really isn't doing history justice," he added.
Yeah, I got inspired to write in the education thread but I will respond here. This must be a result of conservatives taking over school boards. I just want to know how many schools were named for failed German leaders of WW1 or WW2 or Japan. It is typical white people who support racism but don't have balls to say it except in private company.
The only schools in the US that are named for vanquished foes are those bearing the names of Confederates or Indians
That would be a good name for every high school named after a confederate figure, though. Change them all to that.
