Not sure "available" is the right word. Maybe they just don't want to do that type of work and/or they don't give it serious consideration. But they are available to them. It seems the whole demand for gender parity only applies to comfy office jobs and yet when gender pay gaps are calculated, its generally done with a simple GDP/population formula.
Am having work done on my apartment. The two electricians who showed up were both female. (Neither were U.S. born.)
I must confess, the one electrician was rocking the tomboy look. I would get that haircut myself, if I had hair.
Five men repping Dr. Wankler's post. Y'all are supposedly the good ones, and this is where your thoughts go. What do you think happens when a female electrician or plumber or HVAC tech goes alone into the home of a man who isn't one of the good ones? Women avoid the trades because we don't want to get sexually harassed and assaulted. I am aware that not all trade jobs involve going alone into peoples' homes, but even in group settings, the amount of sexual harassment women receive in the trades is very high. Feminists have said this over and over and over and over and over and over and over, and assholes like BocaFan just ignore it in favor of accusing women of being lazy hypocrites. A job is not "available" to a person if it comes with constant harassment and a high risk of sexual assault.
Fair point in the specific context of jobs that involve going alone to homes of rando people. But my comment was specifically referring to jobs that don’t require anything beyond a HS education, so not sure how my post got embedded into phedre's point. The main “unskilled” jobs I can think of that involves going to homes of randos are mover, window cleaner and painter, all of which are usually 2-person jobs at least. IOW, available to women. Also, are we seriously still pretending that not everyone watches porn? This is my main issue with woke arguments. People making them are often worse than naive. They pretend to be naive.
Y'know, there are kind of a lot of women truck drivers these days... and woodworkers/cabinetrists. Welders. Landscapers. Only known one plumber, but if you try harassing her you'll be picking your teeth off your epiglottis....
I don't think that's the main reason women don't choose trades. It may be a big consideration when considering whether to become an independent contractor. Had a drop dead gorgeous female cable tech in NYC. I did wonder why the hell she was doing a job that involved entering men's apartments alone.
I have to admit, one reason I wish more women were working in the trades is that, when we needed someone to come into my house, my wife would be willing to work from home that day. As it is, she had one too many creepy Trumpy guys when she was in the house alone, and as a result, I've always had to be there when the plumber/furnace guy/electrician/ whoever comes around. If a woman was coming in to fix the furnace, I would be more likely to be able to convince here to work from home and let me not have to deal with it.
I suspect she was quite safe from physical violence, since her movements were tracked and on public record. Potential assaulters would know that. (You're welcome to search on google for accounts of assault/rape on female plumbers, electricans, cable technicians, etc. I did and found nothing.) Whether sexual harassment is common, I could not say.
I do not understand what the connection is between conservatism and the trades, or conservatism and rural life. My dad called Black tradesmen whenever it was possible, to avoid the Trumpiness and potential rapists. It also put money into another Black man's pocket.
We had a couple brothers over to give us an estimate on painting we'll need done next year. They've been painting several houses in our neighborhood and they come highly recommended. As in, "unlike most people who you've hired, these guys won't try to rip you off."
I think he's referring to Trump's creepiness, not his politics. His self-admitted seduction technique for instance.
Well, specifically the creepiness of one of the Trump supporting furnace guy, who has since retired. Our plumber might be a Trump supporter, though I doubt it. He hasn't tried to rip us off.
Oh, no doubt- what I typed there was something I mentally attach to my thoughts when I read that some tradesman did a creepy or conservative thing. It wasn't relevant to Doc's post, but it wasn't quite a throwaway phrase, either. I AM stumped.
