Actually, I AM basing my comments off this website (and its precusor rec.sport.soccer. Heh. Me, old guy!)
Seems about right. I thought 2002 was a very good team that unfortunately was grouped with Arg. and then had to play Brazil in round of 16. By 2006, it was that team on fumes hoping that adding Wayne Rooney would do the trick.
The English national team has always had good players, very bad management! This is probably the worst (on paper) English team for a while, the next generation seem excellent but you can almost guarantee that as soon as they hit 21 they will discover booze, cigarettes and 'fatty' foods and go downhill fast!
That's actually pretty good. Most people discover those things a lot earlier than 21. Cigarettes? Seems very 20th century, for professional athletes.
Was going to type fags but apparently it means something else in a certain other English speaking country!
Perhaps their not the best on paper, but someone in England finally realized that if you are going to err in player selection, then choose speed. This team is VERY fast just about everywhere on the field. Speed helps cover deficiencies when coupled with decent talent. Until now, England teams have been very slow.
Will be interesting match up I am more leaning to Colombia cos of the atmosphere in the city when they win
