England, Round of 16 Referee: Larrionda (URU) Assistant 1: Fandino (URU) Assistant 2: Espinosa (URU) Fourth Official: Vazquez (URU)
I believe Larrionda's crew sets a record here by being the first 4-man crew on a World Cup knockout stage match to all be from the same country (obviously the 5th man is Uruguayan, too, but that position is still relatively new). As for this match... I would not put the odds of Jamie Carragher still being on the field after 90 or 120 minutes at anything better than 50/50.
What's the over / under for red cards for this match? I'd guess it'd be set at 1.5, knowing Larrionda's history and the history of these two teams. Will be interesting to see how he handles his cards in this one.
Amazingly, I think Larrionda has been in the upper echelons of the tournament officials list here in 2010. Coming from an American who remembers ITA-USA 2006, I think that's saying a lot.
OK, hopefully somebody will agree with me that the offside call at 3 minues was wrong. The German back was unpressured and pushed the ball over his backs. That was not a deflection... Rooney was right to be upset.
Agreed, and again comical that the commentators can't even explain to the viewers why or why not there was a debate if it was called offside.
Bit worried about that Cole/Podolski challenge in the 12th minute. I saw a red coming when he took that bad touch.
Do you mean the Cole/Muller challenge? Cole went in studs up, but it wasn't towards the player. It looks like Larrionda is letting them play.
Yeah. I didn't mean it was a red, I meant when I saw the bad touch, I could see a red coming before they went in.
Please...please...please tell me the commentator didn't just call the German goal offside. IT WAS A GOAL KICK. I'm going to go sit in a corner and cry.
Nope. You can't be offside if you receive the ball directly from a goal kick, corner kick, or throw in.
To use a common English term, what a howler of ignorance by the color commentator. He needs to bone up on the laws of the game. Repeat on the broadcast ten times a player is not offside on a goal kick.
Well, wasn't just the commentator since they did that offside shadow thing from the truck; that basically makes the commentator comment about it I think. Oops all around!
Big miss for AR in England's "second goal". It looked like it was in in the run of play, and replay confirmed.
We've said for awhile it would take a controversy in a major World Cup match to get us goal line technology. And now we have it.
