I've seen alot of Lagos bashing this past season and off-season. Honestly, In the last three years, I haven't seen anyone give more effort and heart than Manny Lagos. Some equal him but none give more. Lagos is in it 100% for all 90+ minutes, he is a great influence for the younger players and no matter what some of you say, he's not a bad player and he takes losing personally. I'm sure his recent signing was for less money than his previous annual salary. That's probably because he loves this team, this area and he and Dom have a history together.....Lagos is the type of player Yallop wanted on this team.......true, his style is unorthodox but that makes for matchup options on the gameday line-up. Yallop used Manny alot on the post-season run and he not only held his own, he played quite well. I'm sure Manny would like to play more than he does but he won't gripe about it, he just trys to work his way into the line-up. I'm personally happy that Lagos is back for the Quakes and i'm looking fwd to a healthy productive season from him. I wouldn't be suprised to see him assisting Dom in a few years, afterall, coaching is in his blood.

Strictly in terms of his play, my vote is somewhere between "glad he's back" and "he's OK". But the loyalty factor pushes that vote to "glad he's back".

I agree with ldb that he gives 100% and plays with passion. Also on the plus side, I think he's great at winning balls and has a lot of soccer smarts. On the negative side, to me it seems like he has slow acceleration. I think he actually has decent speed once he gets going, but it seems to take him a bit to get it going.

But overall I like him as a part-time playing veteran, presumably with a good attitude about possibly coming off the bench, and enough knowledge and experience that he can serve an unoffical player/coach role.

I'm repeating a previous post of mine on another thread, but in late '02 I attended my first Quakes game. I really wanted to see LD play, but the player who really caught my attention that night (3-2 or 4-3 win over Columbus?) was none other than Manny Lagos, who fought like crazy all night to win balls and hold posession for the team.

I still remember the goal he served the assist on a couple years back against New Jersey where he took the ball down the endline into the box, falling down two or three times, shaking half the MetroStars before dishing off to somebody (Barrett?) for the easy goal.

He's good for a couple of jawdroppers each year, usually good ones.

hey, i'll give 100 percent effort and heart, too. doesn't make me a good player for the quakes.

while he's busy busting his butt, would it hurt him to pass the ball instead of putting his head down and trying to dribble through three defenders while teammates streak free? the guy kills more offensive chances than anybody, and since he's not exactly a defensive stopper I would say his usefullness is about tapped out.

still appreciative of all he's done for the team, but his time has come and gone. :(

In complete honesty- I thught that Manny was going to hang up his boots after last season. His wife just had their second son, and he is one of those really invovled fathers. I had figured he was ready to hang up the cleats and be a daddy. When the news hit, i was EXTATIC! I luv Manny to death. I agree with LDB on his work ethic, and Manny is one of those players (like Dero, IMO) where he seems to be average in his playing, and then somehow, someway, he comes out of nowhere to really make some awesome play that just so happens to pull us out of a tough situation, or to win us the game. Personally, I agree that he isn't very fast, but his strides are enough to catch up to anyone after he gets going. The presence and work ethic he reflects on the filed is just awesome. I am VERY glad that Manny is back with us...(well, maybe with us). I'll just say- I am very happy that Manny has re-signed!:)

    There, that's my 2 cents....

I'm hot and cold on Manny. Looking at the 2001 highlight video, you forget how many quality goals he had that year. But, he's been a mere shadow of that the past two seasons. The goals he's been getting haven't been pretty, but have been a result of hustle.

And, he did pick it up a bit in the playoff run. And, that sprawling, leaping shot in the Cup Final has destined for the back of the net had Thorton been a little slower.

So, he's earned himself a role, some role, on this year's team, but I'd put him on a short leash. And, if someone came looking to trade some draft picks, I'd part with him in a heartbeat.

Let's not forget the absolutely critical goal he scored v. the Wizards in the Western Conference finals.

If he can stay healthy 80% of the time, he'll have been worth it for another year.

I really like having Manny on the team, and I'm glad he's back.

I also hope a combination of good health and conditioning give him the chance to play his best.

Otherwise I hope one of the younger guys passes him on the depth chart. Manny at full strength is very good, but when he's not healthy (like anyone else), he's not himself.

What's disappointed me most in Manny is we haven't seen him taking a ball at midfield, running at the defense and either serving a nice ball to the back post or cutiing it at the top of the box and having a go himself. That was what made him so good in 2001. If we can have THAT Manny back for 2004, he's a great player. What we've been getting the past two years is a guy with lots of heart and hustle, but not much of a contributor.

Well, seems that Manny will be heading to the Eastern Conference! We'll see if Manny will show some fight with the Crew.

That trade doesn't make sense, columbus doesn't need Lagos......Why would Club America SJ get rid of one of the few spanish speaking Quakes? :D

Dom wouldn't be ok with this trade.....if Lagos renegotiated his contract for less just to stay here and then they traded him, and he has to honor the lower contract AND live in Columbus......that's bush!!!

You're reading way too much into this trade. The Quakes have Russell and Alvarez on the left, and need to get younger. Lagos is on his last legs. It would have been nice to keep him, but he wsa the obvious choice to let go. It some ways, it's lucky Manny got any contract at all, much less a lower one.

He may not want to go anyway due to his wife being a lawyer in Bay Area if I'm not mistaken.

And the Crew do need him: they need wing help with Garcia having such a terrible year and West rumored to have signed in Europe.

Yes! The poster child for expendability. I would have been happy with a bag of practice balls, really. I admire and honor his heart and hustle, but he's mostly been running on fumes the past two years. But, I wish him well and I'll always give him a cheer during the pregame intro's. Any word yet on when or where the picks appear?

Still, I would have been happy to have him on team. A great guy to have on the bench, in the locker room, on the practice field, plus, he still contributed mightily down the stretch. I don't know if he was on his last legs or just fighting off chronic injury. Those bone spurs can be a be-atch.

Yeah.....keep ditching guys like Lagos, Ekelund and Agoos. Leaders by example and coaches on the field.....this team will spin out of control. Arturo Alvarez? Ian Russell? Great.....now you start depending on guys like Mulrooney and Dayak to lead this team.......it's not their style, they do lead by example but they aren't field-coach type players. I've seen Lagos, Ekelund and Agoos all barking out orders on the field and the younger guys seemed happy to listen. You can talk about Lagos' last legs and running on fumes all you want.....I think it was injury, if you wanna talk Quake injuries, don't single out Lagos......we got a long list.

I agree with you about Agoos and Ekelund. The Quakes need both of those guys, or one of them at minimum.
