I haven't been to NY area in ages. I am wondering if you guys can suggest best places to stay (NYC vs Jersey), trasportation options to stadium, etc
Why not stay in Brooklyn? There's great accomodations in BedStuy or Crown Heights, for which no reservations are required. Dirt cheap. Just show up. And then, I'm sure anyone in either of those neighborhoods will be happy to give you a free bridge and tunnel ride to and from the burbs to cheer your ManUre!
Be sure to go to a few Metrostar games while you're in the area. The quality will be much higher than the Juventus and Manchester United game.
I would ignore DoctorK's post if you are interested in keeping stuff like your luggage and wallet in your possession. The easiest non-car way to get to Giant's Stadium is the bus, which leaves from Port Authority on West 42nd street (near 8th ave). That's just south of the theater district, in which there are a lot of hotels, though pricey ones. So, the most convenient trip would involved staying over there and walking to the bus. Though, on that day, count on another 8,000 people trying to take the bus with you so get there early. Really though, anywhere in Manhattan (south of 125th on the west side, south of 96 on the east side) will be in a decent enough neighborhood, near some attraction or another and walking distance from the subway that you can use to get to Port Authority. Enjoy the city, and try not to buy any Rolex watches on the street. Jersey is very spread out. Trying to stay in Jersey without renting a car is not a great idea, since public transportation like buses will take you forever to get anywhere and they don't cover a great area the way transportation in the city does. Not being from Jersey I won't try to offer you location advice, but I can tell you that you don't want to stay anywhere near the stadium because it's in the middle of nowhere, closest to an airport, garbage landfill and barren swampland. Not kidding.
Depends if you are planning to go around the city afterwards. There are about 8 hotels within 2 miles of the stadium. There is a nice Sheraton within a half a mile. The only problem is going to be after the game if you don't drive. Trying to get back to the hotel might be difficult. The Sheraton and the Renaissance normally offer shuttles. Go to Expedia and put in Seacacus, not East Rutherford. This returns more places.
Go to Queens. IF theres anything Queens has alot of is common blocks... Seriously you can stay in Secaucus and be close enough to the city and pay low prices. Buses un often and some Hotels(good ones) offer shuttles. You may also want to ask for shuttles to the stadium because that is going to be your problem. If they dont then a taxi ride shouldnt cost you more than $12 last time I took it. The only thing you would need a car for is if you want to see NJ cause unless you study your NJ Transit manual of every bus route and ever train route youll have a hard time getting out to see anything. ANd really there's not much to see in NJ except soccer and if you want to gamble there's AC, oh yeah and the shore, but thats about it. You can however go on a "Weird NJ" tour and visit all the folklore spots.
Jamison and Metrocorazon, you guys are such good Samaritans! Seriously, the big question is whether or not you want to rent a car. You don't want to be at a Jersey hotel without a vehicle. It has been years since I lived nearby the stadium and had to commute via the buses, but I think the 164 (or 163?) goes through the Meadowlands, with a stop at the racetrack and/or by the hotels/stripclubs on Paterson Plank Road, a short walk from the stadium.
Why not? I lived here almost all my life without a car and get around fine. Specially if all you're doing is going into the city. I doubt he wants to spend his days on vacation visiting downtown Paterson.
Metrocorazon, Do you really think that someone who hasn't lived all their life in Jersey will have as easy of a time as you do getting around without a car? Where in Jersey do you live that you don't need a car? How on earth do you get to the mall? The extra time you would spend on a bus getting back and forth to Jersey would not be worth the money you would save on a hotel. Why stay at the Red Roof in Secaucus when you could stay at the Waldorf? If choosing the former, I'd recommend doing so with a car; the latter, without. I still recommend that all ManUre fans follow my earlier accomodations suggestions, made in response to the initial post of this thread.
WNY/UC/NB west new york, north bergen or union city lots of hot spanish mamis, lots of good restaurants, and lots of massage parlors... Fucq NY
I live in Secaucus I dont need a car cause Im in NYC everyday, and even if I did have a car I wouldnt take it in. And if people wanna hangout we usually hangout in the city anyways, theres no REAL place to hangout in NJ unless you are hanging out in someones house, and thats lame, Id rather be at my OWN house if that was the case. Extra time? You mean the 20 minutes? All around the NE NJ counties there are busses to NYC every 20 minutes. From my house its only $2 each way(same as subway). And if you take the bus during morning rush hours to get a full day of sightseeing youll be in the city in 10 minutes since the busses have their own lanes. I too would suggest you stay at the Waldorf or some other place in NYC if you have the money tho. I mean if you are staying at a Holiday Inn you are basically paying more for the same crap and just more for convenience. Unless you plan on staying on one of those famous 4 star hotels I dont think its worth it. And I recommend ManUer fans rot in hell.
