DC fans, what's your take on the development of Quaranta and Convey to this point? I'm trying to keep an eye on them this year because of their massive potential. I really like Quaranta's size, and he looked wonderfully skilled the couple of times I saw him play last season.
Convey- He sholud begin to take more of the reins of the attack this season. He made a big jump in the second half of last season. Quaranta- He is coming along but he needs to begin to show more composure in front of the net. He has shown that he can put the ballin the net but still lacks some of the maturity he needs That is just one persons opinion.
You're killing me harttbeat......I'm on vacation, chilling at home, trying to get back into the soccer groove after watching, ``Our Way,'' 20 times. And you're zinging all my threads. Can a brother just get a couple questions answered?
Most of us here would agree that Convey is ahead of Tino- he does have a year extra of pro experience and is a year older after all. And as shawn said, Convey made a big leap the second half of last year. Tino has yet to make the same leap. So in terms of Nats time this year, I'd say that Convey is now being brought in on merit along with a big upside while Quaranta is still relying on potential which might change this year into real merit as well. As an aside, and seeing that you are a Fire fan as well with a chance that your team might take a drop in performance, one of the best things about being a United fan since they went bad has been watching the young 'uns grow up: some do and some don't, but it's usually very interesting. Looks like you will be doing that too with some kids with great potential.
I agree with the comments on Bobby and Tino so far in this thread... But the thread got me thinking of the impact that their development will have on DC's season. As Skip said, it's been fun watching them develop over the past few years (even in the midst of all the losing). Yet I have to wonder...most of us agree (sormun aside) that Bobby made terrific strides in the second half of last season. And the buzz on Tino's play seems to be that he's rebounding from his hernia very well. Right now it seems that Ray is doing his best to guarantee that United have a successful season even if B and T only show moderate improvement. Of course I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here and the team won't be competitive on paper till they add another starting forward, but hey, this is b.s. right? Anyway, it just seems that Bobby and Tino's play is a huge X factor going into the season. If United acquire a decent forward, and Bobby and Tino play out this season at a legitimate all-star level (and there's a decent chance of both) might our misery (i.e. the constant losing) finally end?
house, you should pm the guy called sorum if you want to know about convey just kidding i think convey has really matured, as noted above, his play in the second half of the season was very strong and showed tremendous improvement. he showed a lot more physical maturity last year and he seems to have really increased his play as well. he seems much more comfortable playing a significant role and he really became a leader in the offense at the end of the season. he has also radcially improved as a defender, his defense has become pretty strong and he is now a two-way player. i believe we all expect (and are depending) on bob to have a huge, all-star caliber year. in regard to tino, to me this is much like last season was for convey. flashes of brilliance have been shown, tremendous potential remains but he hasn't really been able to put it all together. moving moreno means it is time for tino to step up to the plate and be a consistent player up front. he needs to improve his workrate significantly and he needs to work better with his teamates in the last third of the field. i think it is largely sh!t or get off the pot time for tino
Really? Santino is only 19, and it may take until he's 22-23 before you really know what he could do.... Do you guys still wish you had Mark Lisi? And how's Ben Olsen doing? It's funny. I am a Fire fan. But I've been really interested in how DC and the Metros try to get over the hump...
i'd say this is just more a feeling than anything. i just don't see United having the luxury to hold onto him a couple more years if he isn't real productive. i agree he is pretty young but this will be his third season that he will see a lot of action. i think folks around here are getting a bit impatient.
In fairness to Tino, his injury blew away his season last year. It's interesting to track the development of Convey and Tino. Both had impressive first seasons when they weren't expected to contribute much. Both had their second seasons cut short due to injury and had the same hernia operation. Convey took a while to heal, and was perhaps rushed back early, causing his form to suffer early on. He responded well and was a dominant force by the end of the season. Tino should have that same chance this year to prove his worth. I think he will do it in spades.
Quaranta is developing what I like to think of as a scorer's mean streak. I mean that in a good way, of course, a sense of that ball is mine and I have a chance to score anytime I get it. Lisi is a player with a lot of promise, but I like midfielders who defend, too. I never saw that much commitment in that way from him, and I don't think he'll be quality until he gets it. Olsen was almost all the way back at the end of the season. This season I think he'll get his touch and most, if not all, of his speed back. Then look out. Who you should watch for -- and who, as a Chicago supporter, you'll see a lot -- is Justin Mapp. With the Fire going through a rebuilding year, he's going to play, and I'm betting he'll contribute.
especially with etch in the line up, no way you can have two players in the middle with no desire to defend.
