When I was in Seoul, on the day before the Ireland team left Korea during the World Cup, I remembered Irish people were singing Irish songs in the Irish pub. Even in Japan, they were always singing in the pub and I loved this way. And then I realized that the most of songs were from The Wolfe Tones. Now I bought their 3CDs to find out what they sang at that time.(I have already had many Irish music CDs, though) I like and can sing now "On the one road", "God save Ireland", "Boston rose" and "Celtic symphony." (Of course, "The fields of Athenry", too!) Which songs do you recmmend from the Wolfe Tones or whoever....? Because I just want to sing together in the stadium and after the match...!!
I forget the name of it but it goes "Get out ye Black and Tans, Come out and fight me like a man..." Also "Rock On Rockall".
Ironically enough I was listening to Charlie and the Bhoys when I clicked on this thread (still trying to get over today). While they have songs mostly about Celtic FC they also have done versions of "On the One Road," "God Save Ireland," "The Fields of Athenry" along with one of my favorites "Boys of the Old Brigade" and many other Irish songs. http://www.charlieandthebhoys.com
the wolfe tones represent the absolute WORST in irish culture. their blatantly racist view of britain and rose-tinted view of ireland belongs to the stone-age.
But it's a light hearted WORST in Irish culture and a light hearted blatantly racist view and a light hearted rose tinted view.......... to quote one of the defenses of booing Rangers players and ex-Rangers players at Lansdowne Road.
You're honestly comparing the booing of players based on what club they play for with the Wolfetones? Saddness reaches new heights...
In a light hearted vein: The BBC recently had a web contest to pick the greatest song of all time. They didn't have a limit on how many times one could vote and a world wide stealth campaign by supporters saw "A Nation once Again" as recorded by the Wolfe Tones voted as the greatest song of all time! "May Ireland long a province be a Nation once again". By the way, my favorite is "The Streets of New York". Could be my Da's autobiography.
What annoyed me about that was "A Nation once Again" isn't a Wolfe Tones song as such. In fact this song was nearly our national anthem!
Ah, no! I don't think so. I mean I'm just a muppet with a light hearted sadness in my soul................
