What exactly is this game, i've heard tons about how great it is, but am not sure what exactly you do? What the game's capabilities are? I searched for sites via google but pretty much just came up with stuff for those who know whats going on. So... Can someone kindly explain the game? also, is it available in the states AND for apple computers? thanks -jbb
You are the manager of a team, you set the tactics. (You can either customize it totally, customize a little, or go with set formations like 4-4-2 or 3-5-2). You also set things like what kind of passing you use, whether a player can dribble with the ball or take long shots etc. When you actually play the game syou only see the commentary and make substitutions and change attacking/normal/defending. You set how players train. You buy and sell your players, agree contracts etc. Sometimes the media will praise or criticize a player and you support/criticize the player. You can get it in the states, might have to order from a british site. Not sure about macs but it probably is. Go to www.sigames.com the official site. A new version is coming out soon. MAin change is that you will see a 2D visual during the game showing where the players are moving etc.
There is a demo coming out of CM4 this weekend I believe. Download it from sigames.com. You will not be dissapointed.
Easily best sports simulation ever. Arguably top five best simulation game ever. You manage one of the world's clubs or countries. You do everything that is fun: sign players, pick tactics, win championships, get relegated, pretty much whatever you can imagine. Completely text-based until version 4 which comes out next month with a 2-D graphical interface. The demo for CM4 comes out in a little over 2 days. Go to www.sigames.com then and download that and try it and that will give you a better idea than anyone can explain. It's amazing and gets much better between releases. Only negatives are that even with a top-notch computer it's still going to be slow and it's as addictive as a computer game can be. Oh yeah, you have to order it online from England and I think it's out for Apple's.
I have it for my Mac and it works just as well as the PC version. Feral interactive publishes it for the mac (http://www.feral.co.uk/) and usually their version come out a month or two after the PC version.
The coolest part about the game is that all the players are real players, the leagues are real leagues, and you play in the real competitions: anything from the Windscreen Cup for lower division English teams, to the UEFA Cup and the Champions League, or the Copa Libertadores, all depending on which league and team you choose to manage. So you can get a flavor of what it's like, say, to manage or even just to follow a third division team in England, or even the likes of Barcelona (which, like all the big teams, has an incredibly deep talent pool, as you see in the game). The game is all text driven. There's a running commentary during the game itself, so up to now you've had to use your imagination to "see" the game being played. There are several hundred teams you can manage, in a couple of dozen leagues. The coolest part, IMHO, is you get an idea of how global and deep professional soccer is throughout the world.
thanks much everybody seems like a blast-- but i've got a little thing called schoolwork (this being my second go-round at college) so i do need to watch my time ...but, i'm salivating already
Yes you can either watch matches in 2D view or via. text commentary as per usual. (and all goal messages 'flash' as per normal )
Got the demo this morning its good but there's loads of bugs in it and mine keeps crashing because of it
does it allow you to tweak players attributes if you dont agree with them? what about create new players? and freely trade players?.....kinda like ea's fifa series. i hope the answer to these questions is yes.
No to all of the above. Well, you can get a "god" software and edit the data but it's not recommended. You get real players with real issues (like players' personalities, fan reaction, etc). You might not like it but I think the (relative) realism is the main reason this game is so popular. I got the Mac Demo this morning. I haven't started the season yet but so far so good.
"Got the demo this morning its good but there's loads of bugs in it and mine keeps crashing because of it" Please bear in mind that the only demo currently released is a 'beta'. We have released this in the full knowledge its got bugs and will occassionally crash because we wanted feedback from people before the game goes 'gold'. This feedback will ensure that the game is as good as possible upon its release. Finally please bear in mind that because of production deadlines (the demo came out on the ChampMan Magazine in the UK) the beta is a month old and 99% of the 'issues' with it are already fixed - what we're looking for is constructive criticism of the new interface, features and match engine. Thanks for your time, Marc Vaughan (Head of Development - Sports Interactive Ltd)
Yeah i know Marc its a top quality game dont get me wrong and well done to you and all of you at SI for making it such a super game I cant wait till the full game comes out
Is there already a keyboard shortcut to go back to the last screen? I know there's that tiny button in the top left corner, but I never used that in the CM3 games. It's too far out of the way, especially if I'm looking at several players, one after another. I always used the "back" button at the bottom of the screen. Also, it would be nice if the "confirm" button (like in the tactics screen and elsewhere) worked the same as the "apply" button in most Windows applications - it would save the changes, but remain at the same screen, instead of exiting out. And is there any way I can change the resolution? Is that something that can be changed by the skins? Those tiny letters make my head hurt after just an hour or two... and considering how many hours at a time I'd play CM3, that's going to be a disappointment. Aside from that, CM4 looks like the game I've been waiting for, for as long as I've been into soccer. The 2-D match looks like it's going to be the perfect way to represent the match - comprehensive, but not overreaching. I'm really looking forward to the full game. Thanks for your consideration. alansl
One thing that irks me slightly is after a match, I'll go to the player ratings screen and then I'll usually look at a player's page to compare his recent form with the game he just played. When I hit back, instead of going back to the ratings screen it goes back to the match overview screen. It's not a big problem at all, just slightly annoying.

Yeah in the final version there are a whole truckload of shortcuts on the keyboard for most things ...
So far so good. There are a couple of small issues I've come up against. I started out with 4 scouts and decided to hire a couple more. I was able to sign them but when I go to the player/search menu I can't access them to assign them, I can only find the original four. Also, in CM 01/02 I was able to sort the scout report by the number of 'stars' they gave a player by clicking on that column. Doing so now kind of sorts them but it doesn't seem to be based on the 'stars'. Still a great game. From the other thread: Can anyone help me find these new features? They don't seem to be on the list of disabled ones. Other teams are constantly enquiring about my players but I can't figure out how to do so. Instead everytime I go to scout a player I have to confirm/deny rumors of my interest. Also I'd love to be able to plant either positive or negative stories about my players like the other managers are doing. Not to mention the physio reports, I keep coming out of games and losing players for 2-4 weeks due to injuries that never were mentioned in the game commentary and that didn't require substitution. Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. [/B][/QUOTE] Just downloaded the demo last night. To enquire about player availabilty is similar to making a transfer bid. Just click where it says transfer and the drop down window will give five options, one of which is enquiry. I have not figured out how to plant stories, but their is much more media relations. Just about every transfer bid I made was published in some newspaper. Physio reports are under player action where you can do all types of things. As far as number of injuries I have the same problem. About half my first team is injured.
How do you go about ordering the game from SI? I've gone to the website but see no links for a US citizen living in America to order it. I'll say thanks in advance and acknowledge that I'm an idiot if I'm just missing it.
"As far as number of injuries I have the same problem. About half my first team is injured." This is fixed in the final version, there were too many injuries in the beta. "Ordering in America" Chips 'n Bits normally do mail order of our games and many of the UK mail order places will deliver to America (try gameplay as I believe they probably do).
JohnR Two things to say about Championship Manager. 1) The game is really great. Very gifted software designers at sigames. 2) Strange people. I registered for the official chat site and observed every rule known to mankind regarding web discussion (no cursing, no insults of fellow posters, etc.). One week later, I was banned (either intentionally or accidentally, I don't know) for an unknown transgression. With no response whatsoever to my emails inquiring about the matter. Reading between the lines, I gather that the moderators take a kind of pride in banishing posters who they don't like. Guess I said something that annoyed a moderator, so he/she hit the kill button. Either that, or the technology went on the fritz. But as I said, I really don't know since my polite emails went unanswered. An odd way to treat your customers, for sure. However, sigames wouldn't be the first successful company to take its customers for granted, and probably won't be the last one, either.
"1) The game is really great. Very gifted software designers at sigames." Heh - flattery will get you everywhere "2) Strange people. I don't know why you were banned - the most likely is simply that you unfortunately shared an IP address with a spam poster or similar chap. If you want me to look into it for you and attempt to get you re-instated then email me at marcv2@sigames.com and I'll investigate. Please bear in mind that the board while funded by sigames.com is run by fans of the game, not explicitly by SI (basically because we don't have the man-power to moderate a forum with over 40,000 active users 24/7).
I pre-ordered from gameplay for 29.99 pounds. 8 pound shipping unfortunately. But for the number of hours I spend playing it, it is well worth it.
