Can anybody explain to me the rationale behind the creation of this league. Are the Western US teams trying to cut down on travel? They apparently have plans to be a national league in the future.
I don't know if I can give you an explanation but I looked into all this last week because I wanted to know more about the MPSL team in Reno. Some of what I discovered is at this thread ... Help me adopt a lower division team! The short answer, I think, is that it was a revolt against PDL fees. They say they thought the PDL was mismanaged but the MPSL guys keep talking about fees. Take that as you will. The long answer ... First, here's an interview with the GM of the Utah team. It's pretty informative. http://www.menspremiersoccer.com/media/dom.wax Here's an article from a Carson City reporter that gets into some of the controversy between the Carson City PDL team and the Reno MPSL team. But there's a whole lot of general info there too. Northern Nevada's 'other team' also getting ready for 2003 season The MPSL is affiliated with the WPSL. Here are some links to their league structure and finances. It gives some hint I suspect about how the MPSL will be run. http://www.wpsl.info/docs/bsns_plan.html Of note: Here's a projected WPSL team budget. http://www.wpsl.info/docs/budget_team.html Here's information on the league budget. http://www.wpsl.info/docs/budget_league.html Oh, yeah - the MPSL website has some links to news but it's not as forthcoming as the WPSL site. http://www.menspremiersoccer.com/ All that said ... I'm still not sure if the MPSL is a good thing for soccer in this country. For some reason the PDL still strikes me as the more legitmate league. Nonetheless, the first game is tomorrow - April 25.
I view the MPSL as a revolt against the PSL as well. Some teams are from that league are now in the MPSL. That is why there are not many Western teams in the PSL. I imagine that those MPSL teams saw the cost of operating in the PSL too expansive and decided to start something new. However, the MPSL is more a competitor with the PDL then PSL. The MPSL are amatuer teams not paid professionals like the PSL.
This is how the WPSL came about. The western teams (San Diego in particular) were fed up with the way the USL was running the W-League. Felt there was a bias towards the East Coast teams.
