I was looking in the latest issue of Soccer America and they have close up pics of several different MLS players. I noticed that on the LA Galaxy jersey there's a tiny star about of the badge. On the SJ Earthquakes there are two small stars about of the badge. And of course there are three stars above the DC United badge.

Do these stars represent the number of MLS titles won? DCU's won 3, SJ 2 and LA 1.

    Just curious.

Rather lame. You won't see stars above the Fire's crest.

I wouldn't mind the star above the logo, but can't we make it say 5 titles for one star?

Not until we've been around for more than 8 years, dude. And regardless, how many clubs in the NFL (e.g.) have won more than 5 titles? This isn't the EPL, where like 3 teams are going to rack up title after title after title. A team's first, or second, or third actually means something here.

We also only have 10 teams for now. I think they should change it after the 10th season for 1 every 5 or ever other championship.

    (Re: EPL)

umm... 1st-3rd place over here = Champions League spot = £££££, plus serious overseas competition which is more far more regular than once a year.

    Not exactly meaningless ;)

I think you missed his point. He meant their first, second or third league titiles. not their place in the standings (yeah, standings ... not table).

Metrostars have a star as we... oh, wait. No, that is Nicks fancy...

Within the crest, which is divided into four quadrants-two red, two black--are a soccer ball (lower right corner), the team's red-and-black uniform stripes (upper right corner), and a star in the upper left corner signifying "MetroStars" as well as excellence.

Putting a star above your crest after every championship is stupid. It should be something very special. In Italy, when you see a star above a teams crest, you think WOW. It signifies that that team has maintaned an astonishing level of excellence. In MLS, it's cheap. It means that you've one it once. I say it should take AT LEAST 5 championships to earn a star. Who cares if no one has any for a while. It should be something that you earn over time.

I'm pretty sure the Metrostars' star signifies their 2000 Eastern Division title. :)

When a team wins 5 championships, change the star system, other wise let them keep it.

Why do we have to do it like Italy does it? And I seriously doubt that MLS has an offical "stars" policy (see comments about the Fire above), but I'm sure that as the league gets older teams will change things around (can you imagine a crest with something like 15 stars around it? Nike, Addidas, et al. would never allow this, let alone the MLS front office).

You'd never see that. If a team won 16 championships, you might see 3 stars, one gold, one silver, and one white, or something like that (gold=10, silver=5, white=1).

    I see stars

I'm not suggesting doing it like Italy does. In Italy, a star signifies 10 championships. I was saying 5 as a compromise. My main point is, why do we have to wait until someone has 5 championships before we set some official standard? Why do teams HAVE to have something above their crest? Permanently adding something to your crest should be special. The longer teams go without getting a star, the more special that star will be. The more meaning it will carry with it. Right now, the star is meaningless. With the roster turnover in MLS, teams change drastically within a couple years. A team can do well one year, win the cup, and lose half of their squad before the next season. Therefore, that star is not representative of the team that is wearing it.

On the other hand, if a team where to get a star for a certain number of cups won, say 5 or 10, then that star would be representative of the team. It would represent that throughout all the roster changes, coaching changes, and general parity that exists in this league, this club has remained successful. That this is a club of champions. People who will always find a way to win. When this is what an opposing player thinks when he sees the star above your team's crest, that is when the star is serving it's purpose.

I say all of this with the exception of the Metro's Eastern Conference championship star. They should keep it. I mean, considering how special that was:)

    Why stop there?

Gold star = 10 MLS cups
Silver star = 5 MLS cups
White star = 1 MLS cup
    Red heart = 5 Supporter's shields
    Yellow moon = 1 Supporter's shield
Green clover = 5 Conference championships
    Penguin = 1 Conference championship

    ;)

    Re: I see stars

I say the Fire should put a star above their badge because they scored a goal last weekend, you know, considering how special that was. Or maybe a star every five goals so you'll have something to look forward to next season.
