Good question. The only thing I can think of (and it has probably already been discussed to death!) is that AEG may have imposed some conditions on any new owner before relinquishing the team and these conditions were unacceptable to any new ownership.

I'm just happy the A's ownership is this serious about the whole thing and has made this announcement!

it's been repeated many times in various forums. Wolff was asked that very question (why not buy the team, etc) and his response was something to the effect of "it was my impression that ship had already sailed."
