Adu needs to play defense on that Dayak goal.

Apparently the extra 10-15k people in your stadium don't really agree.

Freddy touches the ball. Freddy makes a SJ Gorilla look silly. Crowd: OOOOOOOOOOHHHH! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

well taken goal by dayak. it felt like there was a magnet in the back of the onion bag that just sucked the ball in.

Well, a pretty good performance but ya gotta play 90 minutes.

These hot afternoon games you pretty much know they're gonna get tired around the 70 minute mark. On the goal I saw 4 guys walk-jogging back after a scoring chance and we left a man open. The good news is we were 1-2 to start 2001 too. We need to beat the Metros though.

    Some positives:
Ching I thought was very impressive. He's not just a target man but also a great shooter.
We were dangerous on set pieces, Dayak was due.
    Onstad remains solid.

Brown didn't do much to impress me. Mulrooney is losing the ball more than I would like.
Credit to DC for staying stuck in throughout the game.

I want to see Coralles in midfield when Dunivant gets back.

I was not impressed with the performance,a draw is like a lost when you're at home.Landon should have been in mid-field like I mentioned before,he was innefective cus' he did not get the ball as much as he should of.Ching looked good and Onstad solid again, they better beat the metros next week, bad day for San Jose teams(those damn sharks couldn't close the door on Colorado).

Should have brought DeRo and Jamil in a whole lot earlier. I thought Ramiro, Craig, and Troy had great games, and Jeff looked better this week. The ref was letting way too much physical stuff go on, but I loved that gk yellow card. Freddy was a non-factor, but at least he put out some effort, unlike his counterpart on the Quakes.

Brown was a flop in his debut.

Craig hit some amazing beautiful passes over the top, especially to Mullan. Great passes by Waibel.

Like was said, Landon should have been in midfield from the get go ... by time they took ronnie out, LD had nothing left in his tank.

Always nice to see Convey blow another 1-v-1 ... they guy blows. Also, cry-baby Olsen was his usual self.

Got to love the Beast getting his goal.

Yeah, who cares what they know about soccer. Butts in the seats, that's what's important! Besides, if some of them keep coming, they'll learn.

Couldnt catch the game, but... 1-1 tie at home? Long season ahead, no reason to panic, but these kind of results arent good enogh if we are going to seriously entertain campionship aspirations.

??? Craig Waibel? This is a different Craig Waibel than the one who played for the Quakes last year then, right? ...did he connect on any short passes?

...Man. He'd be great if he got a passing game going! I hope he wasn't just lucky today.

Thank goodness that's the last of these damned day games for a while...too hot for us and the players.

Glad to see that the efforts are getting a little better but I agree with all who said that Donovan needs the ball more on his foot that it has been. I also concur with the mention that Ching made a huge difference up front. I love DeRo and what he contributes but I have to admit that Ching commands more attention from the defense and that, over time, will start shaking Landon free (and Mullan.)

I'm also very happy to see Jamil Walker get some minutes. He is also a marvelous player and after the season he had last year it seemed so unfair that he wasn't getting some minutes somewhere. Bully!!

So, it ended 1-1. I'd rather have the win at home but, as I was saying to Sepp Blatter as we staggered out of the North End, "Aaaaah, screw you, Sepp! A tie is WAY better than a LOSS!!!"

    See y'all next Saturday.

I'll take the tie--please please please no shootouts.

A rather quiet game, with the grinders accounting for all the scoring.

Dayak's goal was another Johnny on the Spot netter.

Kovalenko's equalizer was a fitted strike--that really motivated him to stick it to the crowd.

Adu had those flashes of brilliance but it was good for him to get the start. Since he didn't register on the scoreboard, Novak could either continue to let him play, or bring him back on the bench. Still, you want him to develop as slowly and patiently as possible without putting the weight on his shoulders.

Chris Brown played more like, say, Charlie Brown. Wouldn't notice him anywhere.

Good to see Ching get a start. I would rather see DeRo come off as a sub since he provides fresh legs and tends to play better down that stretch.

Might have been the last appearance of Bobby Convey at Spartan. I would expect him to be sold to a European club when the transfer window opens this summer.

It's a point, but the team needs to start getting wins, especially with Los Angeles and Dallas starting to pull away.

Great thing the next game is at night--too hot! And, still laughing about Adu going home in a minvan. cheers!

The criterion for being packed is when you go to the beer line and can't make it back to your seat before the second half begins.

Who was supposed to be marking Kovalenko on his goal? It looked like someone was trying to catch up. Shame for you guys that you can play a great afternoon of soccer defensively and then have it all flushed down the toilet on one guy losing his marker.

Mike, you're obviously a little ignorant of the setup at Spartan to make this statement. The stadium has a lower bowl and an upper section over the west stands (TV camera side) which holds somewhere in the vicinity of 6-8k. Today the lower bowl was packed except for the upper end zone bleacher seats. So the original statement is indeed correct. It was packed everywhere people were sitting. They sell the upper section last, of course, so no one was up there except for a few random people.

I thought Waibel did indeed have a decent game, although the goal came from his mark. He was cheating into the center to cover other DC players, so there wasn't much he could have done differently. The problem was that the midfield got a little lacksadaisical and let DC get numbers behind them. At this point, Craig is a better option that Hart at Right Back.

I was hoping for a lot more out of Brown that we got. I noticed early on the he just didn't seem to get the Quakes playing style and thus was always out of position and the others couldn't find him to make a pass to him. He was constantly drifting towards the middle of the pitch instead of staying out wide. In contrast to Mullan who was always playing right up against the touch line on the right side when the ball swung over that direction. Brown also had no clue when to go forward and when to come back towards Corrales. They kept running into the same space instead of spreading out. Left mid looks like it's going to be a battle of 'what deficiency can we live with this week' for Kinnear this year. I'm really hoping Alvarez finds a way to step up his game.

One big positive with all the personnel trials today: it's clear Donovan/Ching is much more effective than Donovan/DeRo. I thought Ching had a monster game until he tired. He either controlled the ball or was able to get his head on EVERY ball played up to him. He simply positions himself and battles much more effectively than DeRo can. No knock on DeRo, but he just isn't that type of player. And Donovan needs a complimentary player to pair up with to be effective.

The Quakes seemed to come out of the half way too defensive. They let DC gain control of the game and ultimately paid the price. I don't know if Dom intentially told them to lay back, but if he did, it was a mistake as the Quakes were clearly the superior team in the first half. It also could have been the sun, which takes it out of both the players and the fans.

On Freddy, I'd say the fact that a 14 year old kid can look not totally out of place is astounding. But expectations of him are way too high. He clearly isn't going to come into MLS and dominate his first year. Undoubtedly, he has flashes of brilliance (like the dummy he let go thru to Convey in the NW corner and the delicate touch of a driven cross that almost made it thru the Quakes defensive line at the south end), but he also spends a lot of time looking like he's tentative and hasn't figured out exactly what can work and what doesn't at this level.

I thought that watching paint dry was more exciting than this game. Boring to say the least. What happened to Donovan playing in the midfield?.And where was this almighty combination of Ld/Ching....What did they do to change any look of the game. They did'nt score that's for sure. And D.C is not a good team so I don't know where half of you's get off thinking 1-1 is a good result. Especially at home. Were getting deeper into the season every game and it seems to me that Dom still does'nt know what to do with the line-up. Why is Dero coming off the bench?. Hands down the best player since the season started (beside Onstad) and this is how you repay him? Super-Sub duty? I mean they did'nt even put him up front with Ching and slip Ld behind. Someone explain the method to this madness. And another thing people. If you know soccer it's plain to see that Ld is not a striker but more of an attacking midfield player ( Mexico game for example). So I don't know why it's so imperrative to play Ld up front all the time when it does'nt work. how much goals has he scored? Or should it be, how much goals do you want him to score to keep his celebrity status? Fans have to start waking up and realizing the this team is not moving in a positive direction right now. And I being a huge San Jose fan want to see success with this organization but I think some guys on this message board could do a better job coaching right now than Dom.

IIRC, on Kovalenko's goal, Waibel was backtracking and fell right on his tush, allowing Dirty Poolenko to buzz by him. It happens. Thing was, it shouldn't have happened, because Kovalenko should have been shown a second yellow and sent off for putting a hard foul on Mullen IMMEDIATELY after he was cautioned for putting a hard foul on Mullen. Abby's a nice guy, but IMO he wimped out. To me, Dema's attitude and recklessness was so obvious there that it absolutely disrespected the ref.

BTW - is it just me, or has Brown not learned yet that the Quakes are a team where everybody works hard? His work rate was most unimpressive, and I think put a lot of pressure on Ekelund and Mulrooney which as a result somewhat negated their potential contributions. I fully agree that when Dunivant is healthy, Coralles needs to be moved up and Brown needs to ride some pine and reflect on the wages of laziness!
