Quakes awards at Gala {R} 2003 Award Winners Revealed -- mlsnet.com Pat Onstad gets goalkeeper of the year, and he and Landon Donovan have been named to the league's Best XI. Frank Yallop was over passed over for Coach of the Year honours. On a related note, the Chicago Fire cleaned up at the Gala-- which I hope doesn't bear a bad omen for the MLS Cup final.

Yallop was robbed. Sarachan inherited a good team and Frank had to deal with personnel turnovers and injuries. I think Frank deserves manager of the year award, but people say voters are harder to impress second time around. It amazes me Onstad won goal keeper of the year award. There are many goalkeepers in MLS I rather have on my team. Mulrooney should be in the starting 11. He should be at least a league MVP candidate.

I'm now at work, at the sub-editors' desk at the Ballarat Courier, and some of my co-workers are now witnessing me making this statement as a prediction. But indeed, Sarachan is a worthy winner; however, Yallop had more to overcome, the led the Quakes to the best record in the league for a vast majority of the season. I wouldn't want to sell Sarachan short, but in this instance, Big Frank got jobbed.

Quakes awards at Gala {R} I think Brian Mullan should have been in Best XI. He is definitely the best outside midfielder in MLS (great article by Marc Connoly on ESPN site about him). Brian did far more for the Quakes than Beas did for Fire. Plus he finished higher in scoring charts than Beas did. Actually, now that I think about it, Beas actually played quite a few different positions for the Fire too. So I guess for me it boils down to the fact that Brian scored higher on the charts than Beas did, so I would have given him the nod. Still, it was Chicago's night. But I have a feeling Brian's gonna light it up today.

They want you to think all the best players and coaches stay in MLS. So if Frank wins and then, mos likely, after tomorrow resigns and takes the team Canada job, what does that say...at least in the skewed minds of those big wigs?
Quakes awards at Gala {R} This has always been a big problem with MLS. They're are always disregarding reality in favor off doing something that will help the league, and nine times out of 10 its a failure. Nobody really cares about about this league except its hardcore fans and they all know who should have won this award last night. This team was gutted of some of our best players at the start of the season, then came all the injuries, then the amazing playoff come back, and we are in the Cup. At some point MLS is going to have to start "pandering" to its real fans.
I think Pat proved why he got Goalkeeper of the Year today!!! 9 spectacular saves, including a penalty kick by the infamous Ante Razov!!!
