With the Sky League coverage announced today, reminded me to ask any of the US based guys if they know anything more about the availability of the Setanta Pub Channel (specifically in DC). There are going to be at least 3 live QPR matches on Sky this autumn, which could be shown live or delayed via Setanta in the States... I think Summers in DC must get the pub channel. I'm pretty sure when I was there last month waiting for the Division One play-offs (semi-finals), I saw "Setanta Pub Channel" at some point. When I put my zip code (Adams Morgan/Mount Pleasant, DC) into the "Setanta Pub Channel Venue Finder" at the website you linked, it came up with: Bar/Venue Fado (DC) Address 808 7th St City Washington, DC 20001 Phone 202-789-0066 Distance 1.28 miles (approx.) Bar/Venue Summers Bar and Restaurant Address 1520 North Courthouse Road City Arlington, VA 22201 Phone *82 1-703-528-8278 Distance 3.83 miles (approx.) Bar/Venue Flanagan's (Bethesda) Address 7637 Old Georgetown Road City Bethesda, MD 20814 Phone 1-301-986-1007 Distance 7.27 miles (approx.) I don't remember Summers advertising showing Division One games last season (other than the play-offs), but it may be that the channel is new. Anyway, if he gets it, I can't imagine that he wouldn't show something that someone requests (unless it conflicts with a big day he's charging for -- WC Qualifiers, etc.). Also, doesn't every league team get a certain chunk of the TV money generally, with each team being televised getting an additional payment? If so, three games in the first half of the season is pretty good (and pretty good for the budget), isn't it?
I don't know the numbers, but the additional TV coverage is a definite boost. The finances will certainly be helped. And I'd bet that Flanagans is a good spot for the Pub Channel, if they still show the Irish sports (looks like Setanta puts most of that on there). Wonder if the Pour Room has a subscription - that would be ideal.
It would be great for me too, as my girlfriend lives over near Eastern Market. None of the DC bars -- Lucky Bar, Cap Lounge, Pour House -- were listed, unfortunately. The guy who owns Lucky Bar is a Cardiff City fan, so maybe he could be persuaded!
I know that the guys at the Pour House are always up for showing matches, but not sure if they'd subscribe to the channel. Especially since it does not show much live - just delayed matches when mainstream US sports are on (Saturday and Sunday afternoons)
Good news about the DVD - it's fine to play on all regional machines. Here's the description from the club shop... 03/04 Season Review DVD 'Promotion' Relive all the goals, highlights and magic of QPR's promotion winning season with extras on disk 1 and the tense promotion deciding game at Hillsbrough with extras on disk 2. In all there is over 5 hours of footage from the most successful season in QPR's history for many years. The DVD has been authored for all regions and in PAL TV Standard. Order your copy now and expect delivery week commencing 26/07/04 or you can pick up a copy from the Club Shop from 21/07/04 when QPR play Ajax in a pre- season friendly. Please note that other items ordered with the DVD will be mailed at the same time. NO EXPRESS ORDERS Price:**£19.99
Is this possibly why mine didn't play properly last year? Could it be a PAL/NTSC problem (is that a problem with DVDs or is it only regional coding)?
I have to ask, does it include the infamous post-game comment comparing an ugly win to....something else?
The first set of fixtures from Setanta Pub Channel... Saturday 7 August Coca Cola Championship : Coventry City v Sunderland 2:00pm (live) Saturday 7 August Coca Cola Championship : Leeds Utd v Derby County 5:00pm (from noon UK) Sunday 8 August Coca Cola Championship : Stoke City v Wolves (from noon UK) 3:00pm no listing for the Monday match (Watford - QPR) which will hopefully be on. Also, they list the Sunderland match as live, but that's a 17:45 match here, so would have to be 12:45 at home - not 2pm. I definitely think we should set up some Football League supporters networks at home. Find bars that have subscriptions and get some proper supporters to meet up there for some exciting Coca Cola Championship football.
I agree. If I can listen to the QPR commentary live, then go out to Summers/Fado/wherever and watch a Championship match or two, I'll probably end up doing that most weekends. I'd certainly rather do that than catch the Premiership. Based on the turn out at Summers and Lucky Bar for the play-offs last season, I know DC has a number of fans of Championship clubs. Since these replays won't conflict with most of the live action (since some hard-cores may be listening to commentary), you'd think we could get a regular group of Championship club fans out to the bars. I sure wouldn't mind sitting around on Saturday afternoon having a few beers with fellow fans talking Championship football while watching Coventry/Sunderland or whoever.
On the Setanta Pub Venues search, when I entered a DC zip code and clicked "Setanta Pub Channel" I got the three venues listed in a previous post. However, when I clicked "English First Division" instead, I got "There were no results within a 100 mile radius." It could be something as simple as the search was for "English First Division" instead of "Championship." I'll have to contact the venues to see if they get the channel generally or if they have to pay for different packages within it and have not signed up for the Championship games. It seems that search may be in error, because the page with info about the channel reads as if you either subscribe to it or you dont:
Setanta Pub Channel listings now show Watford v. QPR being broadcast at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9th!
An update: the channel listing now shows QPR @ Watford being shown at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. eastern, so some of you R's out west/mid-west/southwest may be able to catch the second replay! I've scheduled to take off an hour early from work on Monday so I can get to the bar before 5! UUURRRRRRR's!
I'm looking forward to watching the game at my local here in the Bay Area at 3pm (knock off work a bit early) assuming they're not so cheap that they discontinued their subscription, since I'm one of only about three people that ever bothers to watch delayed Football League games on it. The Pub Channel has also been known to screw up and fail to put the advertised games on, so it's always hit and miss, but on the positive side at least I've seen some Football League games that would otherwise have been unavailable to me here in the States.
Probably Summers -- as it'll be the only game on, I'll probably get the commentary. Fado is just four blocks from my work, so if I can confirm they'll show it (the person I spoke to when I called yesterday didn't know anything), I may change my mind and go there. Wouldn't it be at 2 out there on the west coast? (it's listed as 5 and 11 on the east). Hope your local still carries it -- looks like we'll get a good number of R's games this year.
Setanta Pub Channel listings now include the QPR at Gillingham match -- it's being broadcast at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. eastern on Friday, August 27th.
