Say WHAT? Formiga hit a ROPE from 25 yards that grazes the crossbar. I've seen top male keepers not make that save.
Watch the replay. It's not like she looped it. She struck it pretty well. Also remember that the goal is sized for a man. It's awfully hard to cover for a female and you'll see some things score in the women's game that most men could cover. The keeper is also playing hurt and had to pass a fitness test today. So good goal, and good effort from the keeper but not good enough.
Making that call from 30 yards away, from behind, with no replay.... could have gone either way. But as a defender, if you pull AND kick an attacker with the ball at her feet as she is entering the box, you're playing with fire.
Most of the time when the ref's not sure it ends up being a free kick - I've seen plenty of fouls right on or just inside the line that are called as free kicks. This is the first borderline case I've seen called a PK.
I agree. I thought she was going to call a free kick. I couldn't tell if she got any advice from the AR though. The Aussies are showing a lot of resolve though. Good for them.
I like your username. I'd change mine to usa2mex0ft but people would have to guess which match I was talking about. I didn't think that was a red-card offense. Looked like a pretty standard hard foul. Definitely occurred outside the box, though.
Unreal. I've coached in these situtations so many times. You have a superior team, but you allow your opponent to just hang around, and hang around... and then Bang! You're having to fight for your life. This just got real interesting.
Great skill by Cristiane. Surrounded alone by 5 defenders and she still finds space to get a great shot off.
Fouling the attacker when you're the last defender remaining in front of the goal is supposed to be a red-card offense - "denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity" is the literal phrase. (If you saw the WUSA final in 2003, Nancy Augustiniak got sent off for just that reason after tripping Abby Wambach.) I'd have to look at it again to see if it matched that description, though.
