This message is from Huss and JonnyQuest and is being posted in each forum by the moderators.) Dear BigSoccer Members and Premium Members, As we hope you all know and appreciate, we are always striving to make BigSoccer the best community it possibly can be. One of the keys to our community is our moderators. They work hard to provide a fun and safe environment for everyone on the site. Of course, we realize things don't always go smoothly and that when some people have praise others have complaints. We are instituting a new procedure for reviewing our moderators, and that involves soliciting feedback from you. This is a serious excercise and we ask you to only participate if you take it seriously. We are asking you to post your praise and criticism, and suggestions, regarding the moderation of THIS PARTICULAR FORUM in this thread. Personal attacks will be binned (the mods have our approval to do this) and we are only looking for thoughtful criticisms or compliments. Though we'd prefer you didn't, if you are uncomfortable posting in public, please send EMAIL to help@bigsoccer.com. Thank you for your participation. Huss and JonnyQuest
Folks - read carefully "This is a serious excercise and we ask you to only participate if you take it seriously." Keep this thread on topic
You guys suck. A lot. Sorry, just couldn't resist. Seriously though you all do a great job, except for #@$%@'s (it won't let me type it!)...revelation's threats to card me I've never had any problems or run-ins with the mods. I've only met 2 of the Moderators in person, but I can tell you that the 2 I have met are both good guys and I'm not suprised by how well this forum is kept under control as long as we have people like them running it. All 4 of you guys have always done a great job, so just keep it up.
Our Mod's are the best. The United site on Big Soccer is one of the better run-if not the best run forums, period.
None of our moderators are a stupidface, so we've got that going for us. Seriously, the DC board has great mods and they're one reason why this board hasn't fallen into the disarray of other boards which shall remain nameless (*coughcrewcough*). Barbara Dettinger
I found BigSoccer by accident. I used to be on soccer365.com which is an un-moderated forum. After a few months, I was just sick and tired of all the bashing. If anybody actually had a conversation about futbol, it was a miracle. This forum is like a breath of fresh air. And judging from what I read on other boards, I agree. Our Mods are the best. There Rev, just like you asked, now buy me a beer just kidding.....
Jeez you guys kiss a lot of butt. --Just to be fair and balanced.... May I suggest a Private Message to a person when a Mod feels they are getting out of line (or at least a polite explanation privately) as to what they are doing wrong. (i.e. messing up "official threads" etc. hint hint) This can be before or after official censor, but preferably before. Too often Mod's assume people are complete big soccer geeks and that they know every little bit of etiquette here. While I strive to be a complete BS.com geek I still have a little ways to go. A polite message on occasion would go a long way to avoiding misunderstandings. --Owen
You're saying that revelation picks on you? Why, he picks on me, too! Bat rastard! But seriously, folks... Good mods encourage and extend the discussion, and that's what we've got here. Except, of course, when it comes to the "O!" during the National Anthem thing. But, thankfully, that whole debacle was lost in the Great Crash. Now we can concentrate on important things - like the new logo / old logo / old-old logo debate. And the riddle of the stars. And what size are Talon's big honkin' Adidas, anyway? -G. Rex
I got nothing but good things to say about the mods of the DCU board. This is the best board on BigSoccer that I've seen, and a lot of that is due to judicious moderation of the boards. I like the fact that our mods seem to give the benefit of the doubt when necessary, and also contribute to the intelligent banter on here. Well done, I say.
DC United has the greatest moderators in the whole universe! When the world needs moderators in a public forum, they should look at the moderators here on the DC United board. But seriously, when are they going to buy everyone a beer!? What's up with:"Personal attacks will be binned". Never having been binned before, is there a secret code? And why is everyone mentioning Talon's codpiece?
I'm quite happy with the mod and forum situation. Our mods are quick to remove trolls and personal attacks by either deleting the posts or redirecting them to the "rivalries" forum. I like that ... a lot. As Chico said, the personal stuff drives me nuts. I like the discussion to revolve around the topic and for the topic to be related to the forum. Our mods are very good at that. I like the fact that they warn people before carding them. I'm not sure how the card-review process works, but I hope that when someone is carded that they can get rid of it in a decent amount of time if they are on good behavior. We have an extremely active forum (the most posts and the most threads in the MLS forum, and likely the most posters as well). We're 4 time champions and 3 time bottom-dwellers, so our mods have had their work cut out for them. Good job. -Tron
The moderators of the DCU boards are involved, knowlegeable, and rule with a fair but iron hand (sometimes in a velvet glove, sometimes in a rubber glove ). I would say it's a thankless job, but we've all been thanking you for quite some time. And (for all I know), there is no pay involved: all of them are good for nothing! [rimshot] [/rimshot] (OK, one of my father-in-law's jokes. Mea maxima culpa.) But seriously, folks... I enjoy my time here, and lurking on the other boards shows dedicated and mature moderators exist elsewhere on BigSoccer. Here, there's not a stinker in the bunch. Thanks for all you do. You've made three lousy seasons bearable by keeping us from eating our wounded. So Huss and JohnnyQuest: Give 'em a raise, already! dadman
I think the sentiment in this thread is clear that moderators on DCU board are appreciated by the posters. However I am assuming this thread wasn't put up to merely elicit praise but actual constructive feedback, so here goes. 1. I think that occassionally some messages from moderators to posters contain flippancy (I don't mean in "regular" posts, but when they write as modertors). I know that in many cases these are attempts at humor and even attempts to deflate tensions, etc. However, they are sometimes misconstruded by posters, particularly when worked up. As McOwen suggested this might be better handled by a PM or if in a thread by sorta neutral language. 2. I also think McOwen's point about not knowing all of the rules/customs/practices is important. It seems to me that it might be useful for the moderators to occassionally lay out some "do's and don'ts", their expectations, etc. Most if not all the DCU moderators have been on the boards for several years and may not realize how many things other users don't know about the DCU boards or BS in general. Frankly I don't think I or many of us know exactly what the moderators do, how they do it and what their expecations are. And moreover, we don't know what we can expect from the moderators. 3. Related to that, the DCU boards are very "clubby", something I think fostered by the moderators, whether conciously or unconciously. While this no doubt is somewhat the aim of any virtual community, there are times I do think this contributes to issues on the board. 4. To me, I believe the moderators and the DCU board in general need to get some kind of understanding and policy on the Salvadoran issue. Whenever any rumor/story comes out on the boards passions begin the run, folks take sides and some say some rather unpleasant things, so on and so forth. We had an issue recently where the moderators got aggressive about some homophobic postings (something I don't want to see myself) and I hope they become as aggressive about some of the postings that seem to be inevitable whenever the Salvadoran issue comes up. 5. Remember that the tone of threads can be influenced by y'all. If you are posting messages that contribute to something that devolves into flames, stupidity, etc, it is hard to buy your credibility back if you have to step in as moderator. Anyway, this is meant to be helpful.
Our moderators are the best. They set the tone for the entire board. Sure, we squabble occasionally. But, they give us enough rope and only jump in when they are truly needed. I think they've all been pretty good also about posts that basically say, "I'm posting as myself to ask you to calm down so that I don't have to come back and post as a moderator to tell you to calm down." I've been in the forums for other teams and they don't compare. They just seem like meaner, nastier places. An forum without leaders is like a foot without a big toe. And our moderators aren't always gonna be there to be that big toe for us. I think that we owe a big round of applause to our newest bestest buddies and big toes...our moderators.
I am someone who has had an issue with the mods in recent months. Basically, I was displeased with the lack of moderation on a particular thread. Some of you may recall it having to do with a certain player, a certain inflammatory poser, and gatorade. I complained to the mods and pretty much everyone else about the situation. In the end, it was not handled as I would have liked. However, the mods on this here forum were VERY open to the criticism that I had, and they took the time to understand and consider my point of view. Some agreed, some disagreed. That is all you can ask for from moderators: that they be open to constructive criticism and that they be responsive if a situation gets out of hand in one or more person's view. Day in, day out these moderators do a FANTASTIC job (and a really difficult one, at that) on this board. When things get hot and heavy, they make judgment calls and are ever present. Sometimes they may make a call that poster's disagree with, but they listen to the points and consider people's opinions. That is what moderating is all about, in my opinion. Tim Connor
Can't deny that one. Life's more fun that way. Well, for me at least. I also do it to keep the Mods on their toes, so if anything bad ever does happen around here they are more than prepared to respond effectively.
From my chair the mods on this board do a very good job for a voluntary non-paid function. I have only had issue one time but never brought up anything about it and let it go as a mod having a bad day. Keep up the good work.
