On Fox Sports World's commercials for their MLS broadcasts, Freddy Adu comes on for a moment and says, "I'm Freddy Adu and you're watching Fox Sports World..." or whatever. But it sounds like he pronounces it "AY-doo" (accent on first syllable with a long A). Pretty much everybody else says it "uh-DOO" or "ah-DOO." Maybe I'm just not hearing it right, but is it possible that everybody is saying his name wrong, and Freddy is too polite to say anything? I hope someone has a definitive answer on this. I don't want another situation like with Tony Sanneh. I still don't know for sure if it's SAH-nay or SAN-uh. While we're at it, is it PAY-lay or PELL-ay? It looks like it should be PELL-ay, but I've got a children's biography of the man that says it's PAY-lay.
How are you pronouncing "PE"? I'm just trying to get it right. Is it like "pee" (not likely), "puh," or "pay"? Oh, wait, I think I get it. You're saying it's like "peh," right? But wait, then it's PEH-leh? Shouldn't it be PEH-lay? And if so, isn't that pretty much the same as PELL-ay? I can see I'm going to be sorry I asked.
i was gonna ask this same question about the FSW spots. No way I say he pronounces his own name wrong for the promo spot.
Damn that was confusing, if I get they way you are pronouncing it, it would be something like peh-le or I guess peh-leh.
I've actually started to hear a few broadcasters pronounce it that way since those spots started running. Aye-Doo. Actually, I heard the new pronounciation a few times before I saw the spot on FSW and then it all made sense.
The BigSoccer community comes through! AY-doo it is! I'm glad my ears weren't just playing tricks on me. Hopefully this will put the kibosh on those "Much *** About *******" headlines.
The real pronouciation of Pele's name is peh-leh. The Pay-lay or whatever is the American way of saying it. Peh-leh is the real and Brazilian way of saying it.
