In Germany, Heidenheim and St Pauli were relegated directly to the 2. Bundesliga.

Schalke 04 is the 2. Bundesliga champion and returns to the Bundesliga after three seasons.

Paderborn defeated Wolfsburg in the playoffs and returned to the Bundesliga after six seasons. The Volkswagen factory team will return to the 2. Bundesliga for the first time since 1997.

Elversberg was runner-up and will debut in the Bundesliga. Hannover 96 will remain in the 2. Bundesliga.

Preußen Münster and Fortuna Düsseldorf were relegated to the 3. Liga. Rot-Weiss Essen defeated Greuther Fürth 1-0 in the first leg, with the second one tomorrow.

In Italy, Cremonese will join Hellas Verona and Pisa down to Serie B.

Monza defeated Catanzaro 2-0 in the first leg of the promotion playoffs. The second leg is on Friday.

Bari and Südtirol drew 0-0 on aggregate score, so the southern league was relegated to Serie C due to its worse regular season score.

Arezzo, Benevento and Vicenza were promoted to Serie B.

We've talked about the exciting end to La Liga in terms of who will get relegated, but what about who will be promoted from La Segunda? Two teams caught my eye at opposite ends of the table. After 8 years in the 2nd and 3rd tier, former champions Deportivo La Caruna have finally been promoted back to La Liga. On the opposite end of the table, Real Zaragoza have been relegated to the third tier for the first time in over 75 years. I know it's been like 30 years, but I remember their great team of the 90s with Esnaider and Nayim's goal.

And there's even a relegation for the 3. Liga, with Würzburg beating Lok Leipzig 3:1 on aggregate.

Hannover 96 not making it to the relegation playoffs was a huge disappointment – exactly what fans of the club are used to after several tough years.

Malaga spent seven consecutive seasons in La Liga's top eleven. In the 2012-2013 Champions League, they won their group, and reached the Quarterfinals. In 2017-2018 they won only 5 games and finished last. The next season they finished third, but they did not get promoted.

Some teams get relegated and come back quickly, and some do not. In England, Bolton and Blackburn were in the Premier League for the same 11 consecutive seasons until they got relegated in 2011-2012. Since then, Bolton got as low as League Two (three levels below the Premier League), and Blackburn was in League Championship every season except for one in League One. Bolton won the League One promotion playoff, so both of them will be in the 2026-2027 League Championship.
