If it's 'unlawful and unenforceable' as the PFA argue then it might not effect things all that much at all. It doesn't seem that well thought out an implementation of financial controls to me.

Southampton have only won twice this season, they've gone very young since Christmas (though not last night) which is often a giveaway that they don't like a lot of the players they have in the 17-18 age range. Even had a schoolboy make his U23 debut.
Ipswich face Liverpool in the Youth Cup Semi final tonight, live on BT Sport at 6pm. Hearing that Harvey Elliott has been cleared by Klopp to play for Liverpool tonight which isn't ideal. A few in ITFC squad have been at England camps previously, although not sure any of kicked on to represent for one reason or another - Fraser Alexander was at an U16s camp but is now a 2nd year scholar, Albie Armin been at a couple but suffered with injury, think he is one that could come back into fold as is very good and U16 Nico Valentine is likely to start who has been at camps I think our U15 keeper may be on the bench due to injuries, Danny Cullum, and he has been in a few England GK camps. Sure Liverpool will have more of interest to this forum on display!
If Liverpool bring Elliott in for the Semis and Final that's massively against the spirit of the competition. I've never had a problem with older players dropping down because they're still age eligible but to bring a guy in after a full season in professional football is not quite right.
It's hard to state view without sounding a bit bitter, but feel especially when they have been on a season long loan away from the club in the EFL it is way too much and not in the spirit - not like he has been on a youth loan somewhere. Guess we'll hear soon, but he is apparently keen to play (which is understandable)
Have to say, I quite enjoyed watching that FA Youth Cup game between Villa and West Brom. Some really good talent on show from both sides but Villa just stand out to be honest and some of their football was great to watch. Some really interesting players to watch over the next season or so. Didn’t see the the Liverpool v Ipswich game so who will be favourites for the final? I think it will take a good side to beat Villa from what I’ve seen.

Barry & Young can definitely get a lot of joy out of Koumetio you sense. He's physically a monster but very error prone & can dawdle on the ball. Great game so far.

28 Cat 1 teams seems bloated for the intention of Categorisation and there are definitely arguments that 2-4 teams ought to be contracted, but that's for another day. Means there are also just 16 teams left at Cat 2 level and an ever-dwindling fixture list, the North loses two teams so as it stands you'd expect maybe Ipswich to move up if nobody else joins, they're technically the most Northern team left, but it does them no favours. Peterborough and Luton are trying to move up to Cat 2 so that'd be a straight swap perhaps.
If the purpose of the category system is to encourage teams to invest in their facilities in order to make the grade then it seems to be working. Maybe an even high level category should be thought about.
they should be more creative with the fixtures. I don't think Cat1 sides would be that annoyed by some form of schedule that allows for Cat2 sides getting games v Cat1's in a more formal fashion. Especially with the squad sizes in Cat1. Some form of 'League Cup' between Cat1 + Cat2 sides may work, especially for the non-UYL sides.
Definitely. They did that in the Premier League Cup for 23s, and even invited Cat 3 teams, but they could do that with U18s too, expand the U18 (or U17 if it stays that way) PL Cup into a similar programme, just maybe not 6 group stage games H+A. Stick to three because they have the FAYC taking up space in the calendar.
Real concerns for Ipswich now as the games programmes gets weaker and weaker - it's bad enough being in a Southern conference that includes sides South Wales let alone if we have to move to North
tbf you and Swansea meet in the Midlands for your league games but yeah, the North section would not be helpful for Ipswich.
This is the first season we have done that though, a few years back 7 or 8 of the same boys had to travel to South Wales 4 times in 6 weeks for 18s and 23s games vs Cardiff and Swansea. Just the sort of thing that makes recruitment more difficult if every other week it is long journeys and over night stays, plus cost of that too. Hopefully new owners do what is required to get us to Category 1 as it is overdue and we should be good enough to compete there over time
A nice thread from Nick Levitt about the changes in youth football 9 years ago and probably has helped with the better standard of players we currently see today with the kids coming through along with the EPPP. I know more can be done and the FA, coaches etc will always have to keep on thinking about new initiatives to keep on advancing and produce even more top talent but thought this was a good read. 9 years ago today saw the introduction of smaller formats of the game, bringing in 5v5 for the little ones and pushing 11v11 higher. Big step forward in thinking about youth competition that stage as well.— Nick Levett (@nlevett) May 28, 2021
