Romero from Tigre appears to be quite an interesting forward. Pretty dynamic in his play and the ability to finish. Two really good goals today and an assist. He apparently had a good season in Chile last season. He’s linked up well Russo(Yes, that Russo’s kid).

I was wondering what had happened to Tigre. Four wins out of six so far this season. They were near the bottom of the table last year. Nice to see a turn around for them.

Romero had the first two Tigre goals. Hilarious PK goal for Rivadiva in between those two. Player scuffed his shot badly but teammate put it in.

Today is the Rosario derby, Newell's Old Boys (NOB) hosting cross town rivals Rosario Central. This is one of the two out-of-group matches for these squads since NOB is in Group A and Central in Group B.

Rosario derby won by Central 1-2, who were the away squad. Campaz and Duerte with the goals, both assisted by Quintana. Central now are on 14 points from 4 wins and 2 draws. It must have been their ill-fated Copa Libertadores adventure last season that caused them to drop league form.

Rosario Central remain top of Group B with a 1-0 win over Sarmiento. Sandez goal from Malcorra assist. Central gave a new signing, 19-yo Santiago Lopez Grobin, his first start.

Lopez made the pass to Malcorra who set up the goal (thus, a secondary assist), but later the youngster faded and didn't handle the defensive pressure well. Still, it is good that Central keep bringing in young talent.

Tigre is, surprisingly, flying high at the top of Group A with 7 wins from 9 matches. Striker Ignacio Russo has 5 goals, which puts him just below the top scorer on 6.

Unfortunately, my Rosario Central has dropped off the top of Group B after a loss and a draw.

Nice 1-2 away win for Tigre against Defense and Justice. Tigre have a 20-yo, Lorenzo Scipioni, who is developing into a good controlling midfielder. Tigre move to the top of Table A at the start of the weekend.

River Plate and Rosario Central played to a 2-2 draw in that awesome Stadium Monumental. Night match with fireworks before kickoff and packed to the sky. Would be quite an experience to take in a match there.

Anyway, Copetti missed the match winner by a foot. :(

Independiente go top on 24 points while Rosario drop to second on 22 and River on 20. RC has played only 4 home matches so far, with 7 away matches, and is probably the only club to have played both Boca and River Plate away.

With Malcorra and Compaz sitting in the stands, Rosario Central got good efforts from their replacements in a 2-1 home win over Velez Sarsfield. This takes them back to the top of Group B.

LB Sandez scored his 3rd goal of the season with a header off a Lovera corner kick. And then Enzo Gimenez got his first RC goal with a headed corner kick from the other side (Segovia) for the match winner at 90+2'.

Again, with their chief creator, Malcorra, out of the lineup, Rosario were still able to put together some good offense in a 3-0 home win over Instituto Cordoba. Goals came from youngsters Santi Lopez (19) and Duarte (22). Campaz played in the middle, ala Malcorra, and assisted on the second goal.

Big sendoff today for Papa Francisco, San Lorenzo fan, who had to live in the Vatican probably too long.

San Lorenzo 0-1 Rosario Central, 90+1' strike by Copetti. Afterwards, while celebrating in the left corner, a "fan" threw either a flare or smoke bomb into the cluster of Central players. One idiot giving in to emotion.

RC take a 4-point lead at the top of Group B over Independiente, who have two matches in hand; thus, possible to bypass RC.

Iker Muniain playing for San Lorenzo, the Spaniard was a mainstay at Athletic Bilbao for the bulk of his career.

Independiente drew yesterday so now only 3 points behind Rosario Central in Group B. They play their final Phase 1 match on April 30 (Wednesday). A win puts them into a tie with RC at the top; anything else, they finish second.

Phase 1 is almost over. Phase 2 play doesn't begin until July 12. The top 8 from each group make it to the 8th Finals. Boca finished top of Group A.

Independiente lost midweek so now 3 points behind the leaders Rosario Central in Group B. They play each other today in the final match of Phase 1.

Not sure what winning Group B means. The Argentinian league seems to get changed every season and its hard to keep up with the playoff system.

Okay, here is what I could find about the 2025 league season,

The competition format consists of two tournaments (Torneo Apertura and Torneo Clausura) each with five stages. In the first stage, the 30 teams have been drawn into two groups or zones of fifteen teams each and will play in a single round-robin format. In addition, each team will play two inter-zone matches: the first against its rival from the other zone (e.g., Newell's Old Boys), and the second against a second team (Boca Juniors), determined by a draw. The top eight teams in each group will advance to the round of 16. The final stages (round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final) will be played on a single-leg basis.

The winners of the Torneo Apertura and Torneo Clausura will qualify for the 2026 Copa Libertadores as Argentina 1 and Argentina 2, respectively. Qualification for international tournaments will be determined by the overall standings of the 2025 Primera División.

This season, two teams will be relegated to the Primera Nacional. One team will be relegated on the basis of coefficients, while the team that finishes at the bottom of the 2025 aggregate table will also be relegated.

So, Rosario Central will go into the Round of 16 for the Apertura; 8 teams from Group A and 8 from Group B. I suspect the top 4 in each group will get to play at home for these single-leg matches. After that, maybe the higher placing of each pair will determine where the match is played.

Rosario Central beat Independiente 1-0 to finish first in Group B. Only goal came off an Ind. defender's face. Copetti crossed the ball over to Santi Lopez but it was behind him so he used the heel of one foot to lift the ball up and into the face of a defender sending the ball into the net for an own goal.

This youngster Santi Lopez Grobin is getting better and reminds me a bit of Pablo Aimar, who I watched quite a few times when he was with Valencia of Spain's La Liga. Lopez plays on the wing, but I could see him moving to that #10 position if Malcorra or Campaz are not available.

And now I see where Lopez is on loan from Independiente this season. Ouch. :ROFLMAO:

Stage 1 of the Apertura is completed. Now they go to Stage 2, which is a Round of 16. All matches will be played May 11 and here are the matchups:

    River Plate - Barracas Central
    Boca Juniors - Lanus
    San Lorenzo - Tigre
    Racing Club - Platense
    Rosario Central - Estudiantes
    Independiente - Ind. Rivadavia
    Argentinos Juniors - Instituto Cordoba
    Huracan - Riestra

    Matchings are cross-group, e.g. Group A #1 hosting Group B #8 and so on.

Rosario Central won their Round of 16 match at home against Estudiantes 2-0. Their big guns doing the damage late. Malcorra cross headed in by Quintana at 88' and then Compaz hitting a GK parry back into the net in stoppage time. It was Compaz's first match after an injury break with him coming on as a sub late.

Bad day for futbol, all five of my teams lost.

Huracan went into the Rosario Central cauldron and beat them 0-1. Three RC defenders to defend two H attackers, and all 3 focused on the near post one leaving the far post attacker wide open.

    End of Apertura for RC.
