we didn't previous reach 10 finals of the CL and Uefa cups, with nothing.

The thing with Porto was they had a great manager and a great team spirit. A great manager will get you a long way, even if you don't have great players. Koeman is not a great manager. Now if they had picked up Paul Le
Guen from Lyon, I think they would have done well.

I hope you guys don't take offense, but I'm just gonna make my opinion absolutely clear on this subject:

Benfica has NO CHANCE of becoming European Champions next season. NONE! Zero.

And your chances of becoming European Champions in the next 5 years?
    I would say, EXTREMELY WEAK.

    Benfica has no MONEY.
It has no reliable/steady process of GETTING money.
Other than selling your best players, of course! But that kind of defeats the initial objective of building a stronger team.

Consequently, your team is... what's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah.....CHEAP.

    It lacks QUALITY.
    It lacks DEPTH.
    It lacks EXPERIENCE.
    It lacks PRESTIGE.

So... how ON EARTH are you going to compete with the BEST!?

Mark my words....You have NO CHANCE of successfully competing with the TOP TEAMS in Europe

    Z-E-R-O!

You have a LOW PROBABILITY of success EVEN when competing against AVERAGE CL clubs (most of those still have more money than Benfica, can attract players/coaches, which Benfica - as recently proven - can't)

So, why this big fuss all of the sudden about being European Champions?!

Well... IMO Benfica's sudden obsession with winning the CL has one explanation only, that begins to unravel when you look at these simple facts:

    - 2003-2004: FC Porto takes European football by storm
    - 2005: FC Porto becomes club's world champion
    - 2005: Sporting reaches the UEFA Cup final

    And where is Benfica?

    Precisely.

Benfica has fallen behind both its rivals in Europan football, and that is messing with Benfiquista's pride.

It's making them red with envy that, year after year, they get eliminated before Sporting and Porto (well mostly Porto  )

Be it as it may... if you think Benfica can realistically call themselfes a candidate to win the CL you're probably beyond any reasoning.
    You're either:

    a) blinded by fanaticism
    b) trying to kid yourself

Either way, you're bound to get a taste of reality real soon.

I don't agree/ I think Benfica my not have the big names of the Porto team, but got more team cohesiveness, and that's going to take theme to high places

one big mistake was for Benfica to be champion, know they know out to win, second time is a lot easier :D

Benfica's win in the Superliga didn't put them any higher in the Champions League draw, did it?

    Pot 4.

That means Benfica will need a lot more than "team cohesiveness" to beat the teams they're going to face.

You can try to kid yourself all you want, you know Benfica doesn't stand a chance in the Champions League.

Maybe now, I was talking about the Porto team that won the CL. They were a team in every sense of the word. Porto's problems last season was they had lousy managers. And they had no team cohesiveness. Benfica might have that this year, but their manager is not good enough imo. Porto on the other hand this season have better players and a much better manager. But the question is, will the manager be able to make a team out them. I think he will because he's a quality manager, but that still remains to be seen.

I'll give you credit, even though Chelsea is not at the fitness level that benfica is at, they did impress me today against Chelsea. If they play like that all season, they will compete for the title and might even hold their own in the CL. It all depends on who they draw of course.

I disagree. I believe defending the title is much harder than winning it.

they got as much change as any other team, look what sporting did in the uefa cup, any portuguese team can go all the way to the top, they don't have to fear anybody, we prove it today, Chelsea was very luck to get a win

That's not what he says in the article.

He says Benfica can field a decent team if they start Luisão and Manuel Fernandes. He didn't say anything about Benfica going far.

But anyway we all know Mourinho was just being nice. He said numerous times last year that Benfica's team was weak.
Meanwhile who did you get to improve it? Karyaka?
    And you also lost Miguel.

Actually Frank, this year's edition of the UEFA Cup is the ultimate proof that the Champions League is way harder!

CSKA was RELEGATED from the CL, yet won the Uefa Cup by beating both Benfica and Spoorting.

    Are you kidding?

I counted 4 clear scoring opportunities for Chelsea in the 2nd half alone. None for Benfica.
With better finishing Benfica would have walked out with 3-4 goals in the sack.

And besides... what could Benfica prove in a mere friendly!?
You think that's all Chelsea plays?!

They beat Benfica in their own home without even breaking a sweat!
And yet last year everybody said FC Porto only beat Chelsea because they didn't care about the game!! :D Well, now you know the difference!! You lost a friendly with them! We beat them in a CL game!
