I know it's quality and not quantity but DC has just brought in significant reinforcements to support Emilio and Fred ... selecting five key players from abroad to join its roster. All but one of these players are projected to be starters with DC. New York will need to at least match these moves in order to keep pace with Dc United: 1. Marcelo Gallardo (CAM).................... 1. Juan Pablo Angel 2. Luciano Emilio (F)........................... 2. Claudio Reyna 3. Fred (F/LM)................................... 3. CAM? 4. Jose Carvallo (GK)........................... 4. LM? 5. Gonzalo Martinez (CB)...................... 5. CB? 6. Gonzalo Peralta (CB)........................ 6. LB? 7. Franco Niell (F)............................... 7. GK? Jeff Agoos and Juan Carlos Osorio ... work your magic!!!
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 Mods, please change the thread title to Pre-Season Report. tfoisie. Please don't confuse us, you made me think there was a pre-season match already played that I didn't know about. It's not a game, it's a status report you just posted.
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 Seconded, I was expecting to read about Reyna cracking a hip and Conway being out for the season after a 7-2 preseason game with DC United, that noone was told about. Concerning the actual subject of the thread, I think we'll just have to be patient and see what JCO plans to do, we still have plenty of time till MLS transfer window closes.
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 Why does Red Bull need to keep pace with anyone, much less DC? They need to go at their own pace and focus on their issues. Keeping up with the proverbial Joneses isn't necessarily going to get them wins. Also, are all 5 new signings really going to be starters right away?
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 dude you will give people heart attacks with this shit change the thread title already i thought this was something serious
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 I agree that the Red Bulls need to focus on their own issues but I've listed out what I think they are: a starting center attacking mid, a starting left mid, a starting center back (alongside either Mendes or Parke), a left back and a little depth (depending on what the cap allows at that point) either at goalkeeper -- someone to challenge Conway for the starting spot -- or at forward. DC is projecting four of the five additions to be starters on the squad. DC's participation in Champions Cup, Superliga, US Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League means DC will need depth which they seem to have achieved as well: .............................................. Wells ............................................. GK Depth - Carvallo, Thorpe Namoff ............... Martinez .............................. Peralta ...............Burch DF Depth - McTavish, Owens, Schmitz .............................................. Simms .............................................. Olsen ................................................................................... Fred ............................................. Gallardo .......................................... MF Depth - Jacobson, Cordeiro, Gardner, Stratford .......................... Emilio ....................................Niell ....................... FW Depth - Moreno, Kpene (may try in midfield), Dyachenko, Addlery, Monteiro The Red Bull's passage to MLS Cup seems to go through either DC or NE if not both and so for New York to have a chance to win MLS Cup and the US Open Cup, the club must be in a position to win against this squad. I agree that patience is called for and I believe that Juan Carlos Osorio will identify players that will help the team however the bar has been set.
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 You should wish it was only a score. The implications of DC's off-season's moves are potentially much more impactful, long lasting and serious. If Olsen does not recover from his surgery and if DC suffers some key injuries then DC will be hurting -- they don't have that much depth -- however, if DC remains healthy ... look out.
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 Uhhhh, this is MLS. No one has any depth. Even Houston, supposedly the "deepest" of MLS rosters is hurting after the recent departure of two forwards. One point that some seem to miss, is that DC did not have much of a choice but to go out and get some new talent, now. With the departure of Biswell, Perkins, Carroll, Arguez, and Gomez we obviously had to get ahold of some new players quickly. (4 of those 5 were often starters afterall).
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 I think we all just need to put this in perspective, i mean DC has had a long time to decide the course of thier side for the new season. They have the same coach and the same staff working on this through last season and the off season. They also start competitive play in 4 weeks time in the CCC, so they have a more dire need to seal deals soon and get their squad set and ready. We on the other hand, we went through another regiem change and while we had Agoos's work to rely on it had to be reapplied to a new coach and the new coach needs to do his own work, so he's playing catch up a bit right now. We also dont start competitiveplay until April, thats 10 weeks away. (Thats as long as an entire european off season) Plus the Transfer window is open until April 15th, so we have more than enough time to complete out roster work.
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 Yeah, we have to give Osorio at least until the summer brake, to see if he can bring some good players aboard....
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 In the history of MLS the one constant is that massive offseason changes =/= immediate greatness. I'm very happy with the idea of keeping 90% of the roster we have and adding a piece or two to hopefully put us over the top. Let DC be the ones that overhaul their team and approach every year while we build a consistent winner.
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 wow wtf, now I need new pair of underpants and I am at work! ARE YOU HAPPY NOW !??! thanks for changing the title !!!! FREA$Q#TGQRVQR
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 WTF?? If I wanted to talk about DC, I'd go to their forum. Don't bring this crap into our house!@! It'll just attract the COCKroaches.
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 I understand what your saying, but the next time you bring up something like this don't say it's a pre-season game score. It's a status report. Thank you Mods for changing the title to the thread. Tfoisie please pay better attention when you make this type of thread again.
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 DC is not the only team in the East that is improving. New England is looking at a couple of players from Honduras and Costa Rica. Chicago and Toronto have had good drafts. The 2008 MLS schedule will be released soon and I'm guessing the Red Bulls will play teams from the Eastern Conference three times each. I'm behind Juan Carlos Osorio and believe that he will identify players who can help the team including those identified by Jeff Agoos. It does look like the Red Bulls are five players short. The Red Bulls didn't play with a central attacking midfielder last year and that did not help them at times. The team struggled to find someone who could play consistently well at left midfielder; van den Bergh seemed to be a better threat when playing left back. The defense played well at times but all in all gave up too many goals. I feel that the Red Bulls deciding to trade Wynne and Dunivant did not help matters; the players replacing them struggled. I won't waste any more ink on Goldthwaite. I like Hunter Freeman and he played great out of the gate but he did not recover from the injury and regain his prior form; Freeman really got burned one game against DC. Mendes also played excellent to start the season but got into a funk part way through the season. Hopefully that's all behind both of them. Still, the team needs a couple of defensive reinforcements and players that can challenge for starting spots on the backline. Lastly, I'm a huge Conway fan and he played well last season. But I think it is always good to have another goalkeeper challenging for the starting position. I don't Thornton is the answer and I don't think Cepero is ready yet but maybe he'll prove me wrong. I want a goalkeeper who will make a difference in the playoffs and in essence help the team get a win when it needs one.
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 I wonder how many people who are soooo nervous about us not signing 5 new players are the same ones who scream that we need consistency?
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 well first we need to sign those players that we need so we can keep them over the years. thats consistency.
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 Sorry I missed this after such a long time, but...where did Gomez go after all? Metro
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 Yeah, except when players who do get signed don't do as well, there's always a crowd yelling for them to leave at any opportunity which would lead the team to overhaul the squad again. I know, I know, the goal isn't to get guys who suck - but there's no consistency if you're constantly signing players to the same positions over and over.
Re: Preseason Game - DC United 7 - Red Bulls 2 Gomez is in the process of signing with another club. Gomez looked at opportunities overseas but it now looks as if he will sign a two year deal with the Colorado Rapids for around $400K per year. Colorado will have to give DC United compensation to sign Gomez and it is believed to be in the form of allocation money and draft picks. This deal is expected to be complete very soon but there is always a potential it could fall through. There was some speculation that Terry Cooke could be in the trade but there are few who believe that to be the case.
Isn't this great? I just hope this is a trend that continues for a long time. What trend? Player and coach churn at DC, stability here at RBNY.
Re: Preseason Signing Derby - DC United 5 - Red Bulls 0 i agree with you. i am one of the few who thought we should have gave Schopp more of a chance..
I guess you could consider JCO both coach and coaching staff if you want. But Richie, Des and Jeff have been here since Metro. Of course, you should know this by now with all the lurking on these boards.
