Liverpool playing Blackburn in a behind closed doors friendly today. Last word was Reds 3-0 up and Ox possibly picking up an ankle injury.
Posted this in The Bitters thread. Thursday 11 June 2020 Behind closed doors game at Anfield Liverpool 6 Blackburn Rovers 0 FT Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Milner; Keïta, Fabinho, Henderson (c); Minamino, Mané, Oxlade-Chamberlain. Scorers: Keïta Mané Minamino Matip Hoever Clarkson
I'm hoping his injury woes are behind him now and I think Nabby will become a key player for us this season.
Players are set to wear ‘Black Lives Matter’ messages on their shirts instead of their surnames when the Premier League resumes next week. During a conference call on Thursday, clubs discussed how players can use games to join growing calls to eradicate racial injustice in society following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on 25 May.
Good goals but iy could have been a messy match. Players are still rusty but I hope all teams are similarly hampered.
Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray on Liverpool game: “You can’t play your own game because Liverpool don’t let you have 3 passes. It’s amazing to watch the machine that they are. The likes of van Dijk, Firmino, Mane all played & I think it highlighted to us where the very best are.”
If (when) we seal the deal ..... who gets PL Winner medals? https://www.thisisanfield.com/2020/06/liverpool-premier-league-winners-medals/ So far, 20 players have qualified for a medal on the basis of appearances made: Roberto Firmino (29) Virgil van Dijk (29) Trent Alexander-Arnold (29) Gini Wijnaldum (28) Andy Robertson (28) Mohamed Salah (26) Sadio Mane (26) Jordan Henderson (25) Divock Origi (22) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (21) Fabinho (20) Alisson (20) Joe Gomez (19) James Milner (18) Adam Lallana (15) Adrian (11) Naby Keita (9) Dejan Lovren (9) Joel Matip (8) Xherdan Shaqiri (6) There are, however, at least four more players who will conceivably break the five-appearance threshold with nine games to play before the end of the season. Takumi Minamino (three), Curtis Jones (two) and Harvey Elliott (one) have already featured in the Premier League this season, and should play more regularly either from the start or off the bench. Neco Williams (zero) is also expected to be given some game time before the campaign’s end—particularly if the title is wrapped up early, allowing Klopp to test his youth reserves. The expansion of matchday squads from 18 players to 21, with five substitutes allowed per game, should increase their opportunities too, and could even see the likes of Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg earn minutes. As for the staff.... This is where it gets potentially difficult, with it hard to determine which of the backroom ‘deserve’ a medal from an outside perspective. But it is safe to say those on the matchday bench on a regular basis will be given one, those being: Klopp, Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders, John Achterberg, Andreas Kornamayer, Jack Robinson, Lee Nobes and Christopher Rohrbeck. Head of nutrition Mona Nemmer, fitness coaches Conall Murtagh, Tom King, Jordan Fairclough and David Rydings, head of rehabilitation Philipp Jacobsen and elite development coach Vitor Matos all play a vital role around Melwood too. Then there are Andy Massey and Richie Partridge, who both left the club mid-season but, in their roles as head of medical services and physio respectively, contributed significantly to the campaign. And what of their replacements? Or those operating in other, similarly important roles at Melwood, like sports psychologist Lee Richardson and throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark, for example? There are 22 first-team staff listed on the club’s official website, omitting some high-profile names, and with 24 players estimated to be guaranteed a medal this will likely need to be whittle down to 16.
Fu*ck it, I’d also give it to all season ticket holders and every fan that made at least one game. It’s been a communal effort, no? (I'd also give one medal to be awarded to the most incisive and dedicated fan from the BigSoccer- Liverpool Forum. Here I would humbly, but honestly, nominate Samarkand as I think he really has been the best this season and most consistent for many of the past seasons! )
deja vu ... big time ! great article. https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...n-klopp-fixtures-crystal-palace-a9564331.html It was the first season after the Second World War. League play was cancelled in September 1939 after the outbreak of hostilities and wartime Britain had to make do with regional competitions and friendly matches. Seven years passed before football got back to something near normal but life was very different from the previous decade. “Liverpool came to the States for a crack at our teams and our vitamins,” the New York Times wrote. “It was a clean sweep. The Britons swept all 10 of their matches and, like Jack Spratt and his wife, they also swept the platter clean. Enough of the American public were hungry for football to make the trip financially worthwhile. The players were just hungry. “Away from the British austerity program, they plunged zestfully into our steaks, eggs, milk and other vittles. Not only was there a perceptible gain in strength on the playing field, but the squad averaged a gain in weight of seven pounds a man.”
