It seems quite hard to pinpoint the point of the season The People would have used to calculate the ratings for their mid-season update, but I guess using this list and the ratings I have for 'halfway' with Match can give a decent estimate for a 1981/82 mid-season combined Match/People list anyway: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/p...ivision-ratings.2037606/page-31#post-41389283 Calculating for the players on The People's list (obviously for the final version at the end of the season all players can be included and all players will for sure have the full amount of ratings from both sources)- taking the Match average and People average and dividing by two: Goalkeepers Jim Platt (Middlesbrough) - 7.08 Jimmy Rimmer (Aston Villa) - 7.05 Joe Corrigan (Manchester City) - 7.03 Peter Shilton (Nottingham Forest) - 6.99 Phil Parkes (West Ham United) - 6.95 Graham Moseley (Brighton and Hove Albion) - 6.92 Pat Jennings (Arsenal) - 6.84 Defenders Colin Todd (Birmingham City) - 7.12 Steve Foster (Brighton and Hove Albion) - 7.08 Billy Bonds (West Ham United) - 7.07 Allan Evans (Aston Villa) - 7.02 Derek Statham (West Bromwich Albion) - 7.01 Alvin Martin (West Ham United) - 6.94 Kenny Sansom (Arsenal) - 6.91 Kevan Broadhurst (Birmingham City) - 6.86 Ante Rajkovic (Swansea City) - 6.80 John Wile (West Bromwich Albion) - 6.80 Ivan Golac (Southampton) - 6.78 Midfielders Kevin Dillon (Birmingham City) - 7.75 Osvaldo Ardiles (Tottenham Hotspur) - 7.33 Alan Devonshire (West Ham United) - 7.27 Glenn Hoddle (Tottenham Hotspur) - 7.21 Graeme Souness (Liverpool) - 7.10 Ray Wilkins (Manchester United) - 7.09 Steve Hunt (Coventry City) - 7.07 Arnold Muhren (Ipswich Town) - 7.05 Dennis Tueart (Manchester City) - 6.99 Paul Davis (Arsenal) - 6.88 Gordon Cowans (Aston Villa) - 6.85 Bryan Robson (West Bromwich Albion/Manchester United) - 6.81 Forwards Kevin Keegan (Southampton) - 7.57 Cyrille Regis (West Bromwich Albion) - 7.23 Frank Stapleton (Manchester United) - 7.13 Iain McCulloch (Notts County) - 7.07 Alan Curtis (Swansea City) - 6.94 Eric Gates (Ipswich Town) - 6.80 Frank Worthington (Birmingham City) - 6.79 Lee Chapman (Stoke City) - 6.76 Terry Cochrane (Middlesbrough) - 6.74 Mike Channon (Southampton) - 6.70 Paul Mariner (Ipswich Town) - 6.59 Peter Withe (Aston Villa) - 6.51
I'm not quite sure why I wrote it like that, as at the end I'll still be using a published top ratings list from The People (like I've done for other seasons before) , but anyway it should have the ones they rated the highest on average that played at least around 60% of the games I think. I'll maybe have a bit of a break now I've got to the mid-point of the season anyway, but will pick things up with the second half of the season before very long, and then try to finalise suitable choices for the systems/playing roles and get things entered on DBS Calcio....
Actually, those last two posts I made (mid-season Match/People combined averages and the first half of season Match average ratings breakdown) will need an update. I realised that one Match issue didn't seem to be on the Matchfacts Twitter feed, dated 2nd of January 1982, and it contained a few ratings from 1st Division games that weren't in the Christmas issue the week before. Tuesday 15th of December: Swansea: Davies 7, Stanley 7, Marustik 7, Rajkovic 7, Stevenson 7, Mahoney 6, Curtis 9, R James 8, L James 7, Thompson 6, Latchford 6 Aston Villa: Rimmer 8, Swain 6, Gibson 7, Evans 7, Williams 6, Deacy 6 (Linton 6), Bremner 6, Shaw 6, Geddis 6, Cowans 6, Morley 7 Saturday 19th of December: Everton: Southall 8, Stevens 8, Ratcliffe 7, Higgins 6, Lyons 9, Kendall 8, Irvine 8, Ross 7, Sharp 8, Eastoe 8, Lodge 8 Aston Villa: Rimmer 7, Swain 6, Gibson 6, Evans 5, Blake 9, Bullivant 7, Bremner 7, Donovan 8, Geddis 7, Cowans 8, Morley 8 Manchester City: Corrigan 6, Ranson 6, McDonald 6, Reid 6, Bond 6, Caton 7, Tueart 7 (Hareide 6), Reeves 6, Francis 8, Hartford 6, Hutchison 7 Sunderland: Siddall 6, Hinnigan 6, Pickering 5, Hindmarch 7, Clarke 7, Elliott 6, Buckley 6, McCoist 6, Ritchie 6, Rowell 7, Cummins 8 I'll double check all the games have been taken account of before I re-post those lists then (but I think these were probably the only missing games and still the reason most clubs have a few less than 50% of games played was weather related). I'll also see if I need to change anything re: the 'Phase 3' post I made (and the XI for that phase).

One clarification here too - Arnold's average is actually 7.60 from 5 games for this period. Match listed Arnold's name for their Matchfacts game summary for the home game vs Ipswich but clearly it was Neville Southall's debut in goal for Everton. That also means actually re: the Match Magazine ratings at halfway in the season one other name squeezes into the list I made: Jim Arnold (Everton) - 6.75 (16 games) - he played all the games except that one vs Ipswich and also the late December one vs Villa when Southall also played again.
I think I probably did establish what the best formations would be overall for each 1981/82 team now (though maybe this could still be subject to alteration if necessary). I thought maybe it'd be interesting to show those, with in brackets the previous formation of 80/81....and after some ...... the following season's formations along with the league positions finished in those seasons. Same as shown on DBS Calcio already of course for 80/81, 82/83 and 83/84. I did manage to identify all the Match Magazine ratings for the whole of 1981/82 (there had been one time I referred to Pavlin's link again as a couple of grades had been obscured by a ring binder mark on the Matchfacts Twitter feed for Notts County vs Swansea). This summary that @Paul W provided looks pretty much spot on then, with the most significant difference being that I calculated Platt with a somewhat lower (but still high) average, and in theory that could mean Fox had a double (following with being in 1982/83 Match XI also) in the goalkeeper position. It would seem like Stevens for left back in this particular season would be a stretch I think (I'm not sure how much Match required players to have played the specific position - I remember realising Lawrenson in 86/87 probably had played more at right back than I thought, and even here for 81/82 I think Whelan shown in the middle of the midfield 3 might not seem so strange considering games from early in the season, but there was a case of Ricky Hill being shown at left midfield/wing I remember that I doubted reflected his main role exactly even if I still need to review that season) - he definitely seems to have been a 'utility player' this season but for the DBS Calcio role I was probably between TLD (right back), LCD (centre back/sweeper) and ACD (right midfielder). So perhaps Sansom could be in (which would be 3 inclusions overall for him: also in with Match for 83/84 and The People for 85/86)...but then again Match showed the XI how they decided it and unlike the Platt/Fox case there isn't a change based on average rating anyway. For the DBS Calcio XI (using one role once each) Hoddle would be in as ACD, and Trevor Francis out, but again Match's 4-3-3 can have Francis/Keegan/Dalglish all in, and Francis's average (with Match alone, as opposed to combined with The People's ratings) is higher than Hoddle's.... EDIT - Well I suppose Osman is in theory in the DBS Calcio XI also (as LCD rather than SCD), with Lyons out due to being given the same role as Bonds has (but I think English football media would generally distinguish less, by that point in particular, between marking centre back and covering centre back, or stopper and sweeper, compared to Italian media).
