Germany to win overall (kind of an obvious prediction, but most likely).

I wasn't going to bother predicting groups stage stuff, but with the first game in the books I'll go at it I guess.

    A: GER(9) - CAN(3) - FRA(3) - NGR(3)
    B: JPN(7) - MEX(5) - ENG(2) - NZL(1)
    C: USA(7) - SWE(5) - COL(3) - DPRK(1)
    D: BRA(9) - AUS(4) - NOR(4) - EQG(0)

    GER over MEX
    USA over AUS
    JPN over CAN (aet)
    BRA over SWE

    USA over GER
    BRA over JPN (pso)

    GER over JPN
    BRA over USA

I know USA over GER seems odd, as I think the current US team is only good enough of 3rd or 4th in world rankings, but based on a combination of play on matchday 1 with recent USA-GER history, I think USA can pull it off. Yeah.
Can't beat two "better" teams in a row, though.

    @boingo:
I know the US is lacking in defense and in real playmakers, (though maybe Krieger is growing into that role,) but with its strikers and with Solo, you think the US will lose a PSO?

I was thinking the same thing. The only team I could imagine beating the US in PKs would be Germany, and even that would be a battle.

The US did lose to Sweden at the Algarve Cup in 2009 on penalties (although USSoccer doesn't count the game as a loss but a tie, I presume because no overtime was played first). Solo was in goal for that one. Backup keeper Hammerstrom was in for Sweden. I can't remember why Lindahl didn't play.

    Boxx converted.
    Rapinoe's was saved.
    Lloyd converted.
    Rampone hit the post.
At that point it was 3-2 Sweden, but Solo stopped Schelin on their 5th kick.
DiMartino converted, but just barely as the goalkeeper got a hand on it.
Woznuk (Kerr) was stopped by Hammerstrom.
    Mitts hit the post.

Now on the bright side, Solo saved one, with Sweden missing two others.
But the US was only 3 of 7.
Obviously, DiMartino and Woznuk aren't on the team, but the other five were only 2 of 5.

Penalty kicks are an uncertain business, no matter who appears to have the edge. Yes, I'd rather have Solo, but that doesn't mean a sure win.

IIRC right the official FIFA result of a match is always the result after 90min+added time. The possible extra time (2x15) and penalities are never considered deciding the match just who goes on or win the tournament. But it didn't check so I may be wrong.

I'll give myself an A- so far.

Group A-Top two teams right, Canada and Nigeria switched at the bottom. Didn't foresee Canada falling apart.

    Group B-Correct.

Group C-Correct, although I didn't think it would be goal differential between Korea DPR and Colombia.

Group D-My biggest miscalculation on the Matildas. I thought Norway would come on in this tournament and their experience would show through. It just didn't happen.

Ah, we're grading ourselves? eh heh heh....
Group A: I'll give myself a B here. The only thing I really missed was picking CAN over FRA instead of the other way around - which, considering how close their rankings are (were), I think is forgivable. Though maybe I should make it a B- since I was really depending on the GD tiebreaker to put CAN on top, so going from 4-0 to at least 0-2 is pretty far off...

Group B: Hahaha, F all the way. I picked JPN-MEX tie (4G off), ENG-NZL tie (only 1G off), JPN over ENG (at least 3G off), and MEX over NZL (only 1+G off).

Group C: Here I got a D+ - three games off instead of four, and never more than one (needed) goal different. I picked PRK-SWE tie (1G off), SWE-USA tie (1G off), and COL over PRK (1+G off).

Group D: I think a B (B+?) here again - my only game off was picking AUS & NOR to tie (1G off).

    Overall: C/C-

I was SO wrong in thinking who would come out as #1 and #2 in each group....
Would I be "breaking the rules" to re-predict the knockout round? ^.^''

I was right on the top finisher in every group, and wrong about second place in every group. I also got the last place team right in three groups out of four. I was well off on the goal difference for the African teams. I would rate myself about 7 of of 10.

Well given that your "plans" never seem to go as planned ;), I say Brasil has a better chance to win the whole thing this year than ever before. :p

It will just happen that Brasil, while not playing its best, goes on to win the whole thing. ::fingers crossed::

Just curious, why are you cheering for Brazil? Based on your favorite clubs I would have thought you're a fan of Germany or England.

I think if a game goes to kicks from the mark, the winning coach calls it a win and losing coach calls it a tie. :D

I guess adding a LaLiga team to the list(as I do like Barca) would automatically make me a Spain supporter, right? ::blank stare::

You still think Brasil is going to get by the US? I think Australia will get by Sweden as well.

You're saying France will have an offensive power outage against England's slow backline this cup but can come off the bench and drop 2 on Germany, and played pretty tight with 10. But upsets do happen. We shall see.

My predictions are starting to go to hell in a hurry. Oh well, they looked good for awhile. The England-France was not a surprise, but the Germany-Japan match was...obviously. But that's why predictions mean nothing and the game is decided on the field, as it should.

In addition, it appears that a perfect storm is brewing for Sweden. They benefit by the US playing a totally crap match, thus they avoid Brazil in the quarterfinals, getting arguably the easiest quarterfinal match. Then Germany gets upset, so they now avoid them as well. With everything going their way, it's almost seems as though this script was written for them.

Sweden has yet to prove they can score against a competent defense. Japan isn't going to give up the easy goals the way Australia did. I'm sticking with my Japan-France final, which is looking better all the time. ;)

oh, i like them to get past japan, given japan will hold and look for the lucky late counter like the germany game. who really knows?

but if the usa gets through that draw, sweden will not benefit from lucky balls, isn't designed to get france in an ugly game like england did, and well, brasil.

somebody will be REAL battle tested vs Sweden fluke win over the USA.

    Semis:

    Sweden 3 Australia 1 :p
