Sticky this Double, on the double! Lets look to the future now, and leave the evil of the Pleat years behind. Never forget. Never go back. The 90's.
I heard Pleat still wants to be at the club at some capacity. Anything higher then food vendor, and I'm rioting.
I have to admit I found this in the Arsenal area, but it is a good rummor for Spurs. Ronaldo shows interest in move to Spurs. http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2002390000-2004312314,00.html Not that he would win the Premiership on his own, but with a good manager and supporting cast he could do really well. Tottenham doesn't have all the Euro distractions that Madrid has. He could do really well in England.
This is why I hate the fvcking media sometimes. That piece of info is 6 weeks old. Nobody here bought into it, we just thought that he was saying nice things about the person that gave him his start. Now we have people saying that Spurs think they are getting Ronaldo.
I still want to know what's going on with Jankulovski, it's all gone quiet on him. He's a terrific player, hope he comes. Any talk on Tudor has also gone quiet, which I'm very happy about. I think he'd be our Tomas Repka, something the club should avoid at all costs. Andy Reid looks like a no-go. Kinnear said it was David Pleat who was interested in Reid and making the bids, and that he hasn't heard anything since Pleat got the boot. He still reckons Reid is worth 10 million.
You'd love it though, wouldn't ya Never know!! maybe! If Cahill is worth £2m then no way is Reid worth 10.
http://www.spurs.co.uk/article.asp?article=213188 Yeates has signed a 3 year contract extension. Hopefully he'll be playing quite a few games for us next season, I rate him highly. A stocky little guy with some very nice skills, did well on his debut last season as well, it was a good bit of play to create that goal for Keano.
I'm also interested in Davids. Things have gone strangely silent the last 2-3 days. My hope is now that we have out d-mids, he will join. But if so, that probably pushes Redknapp out. If so, who will be captian?
Cahill move to Palace broke down due to agents fees. The fee for him though (2 million) is a very valid comparison to Andy Reid. I rate Reid as a more promising player, and of course is a leftie which is a bit more valuable to the club, but Reid should not cost more than 3.5 million.
This is great!!! All these pre-season moves are getting me pumped up for next season. New coach and a revamped line-up, and hopefully a defense that doesn't go suicidal every other game...we may end up in the upper half of the table next season!!!
I'm excited about next season because the team we had/have since the first of the year has a lot of talent. I'm excited because I do believe Arnesen is fantastic, and that Santini and Jol are good coaches (but Santini will need time to fully learn the language). But, I'm not excited about the players. Davids, Van Bommel, Southgate, Hargreaves, those would all excite me, and I'm glad we persued at least some of them. But trading Postiga (who will be a star) for Mendes, and settling for Sean Davis makes me feel like we're unable to land top players. That concerns me. -Digital
I would definitely take Davis and Mendes over Van Bommel and Hargreaves. I'm also happier with those two than Davids, who is old and would only sign for Spurs for one last fat pay cheque, everyone knows that, much like Rivaldo I doubt very much his heart is in the game anymore. If it was he would stay at Barcelona. Southgate is unlikely, Boro are a team that spends far more than it sells and no way would they give up their captain and skipper, especially now they're making progress and are in Europe. Can't blame anyone for not signing him.
Are you serious Send, or is this a joke? IMHO, Van Bommel is head and shoulders above Davis in every capacity, and Hargreaves is clearly far beyond Davis. Injuries are the only concerns for MvB and OH. I'll confess to giving Mendes the benefit of the doubt, but judging upon what I have seen, I'd prefer either Van Bommel or Hargreaves to both Mendes AND Davis. As for Davids, he has been nothing less than phenomenal at every club for which he's played. Say what you like, but he's routinely the best player on the team in a team full of stars, and while he's old, he's far beyond anything we'd get from either Mendes or Davis in a single season. Longevity is the only thing that even makes it a question in my mind. At least we've addressed the Dmid situation instead of ignoring the problem like last year. -Digital
You must be smoking something. Van Bommel has been disappointing for two years now, when not injured he's looked slow, lazy and offered little. How many times in the past year have you seen him play for PSV in the UEFA Cup? Or for the Netherlands? Or in the bigger games of the Eredivisie? I made it a point to watch him, and was never once bowled over like I hoped I would be. He's not the player people thought he was going to be, that I thought he was going to be. First few times I saw him for PSV and the Netherlands a few years ago he looked a very good player, terrific shot, range of passing and a leader. But he has headed downhill and it says a lot when his only suitors won't even pay the 2 million odd to take him away. He has slipped and Arneson of all people knows it, it's no coincidence to me that when he agreed to join the Van Bommel chase ended abruptly. Hargreaves is a runner, no-one seriously rates him as a top player or sees him transforming himself into a different player. He works hard, is quick and versatile, but he's nothing special and will never impose himself on a game, he's the type of player that's there to fill in for injuries, to play alongside stronger players or to come off the subs bench. He's not a player any team would look to as a key player, he is supporting cast, effective in that role even at the highest level but will always be limited to it. Davis is a player I've seen a lot of over the years and rate very highly. He will prove himself with his performances, he is a dynamic player and has the ability to really impose himself on the team. Will be the best signing the club will make this summer IMO and will prove to be better than Van Bommel and certainly Hargreaves would have been. Whether you accept that or not is up to you, but I do not care.
Well, the bad news today is that Davids has apparently signed for Inter on a 3 year contract. Would have been a coup of epic proportions to sign him, but this always looked like it was going to happen. But the good news is that the club are apparently looking to buy Matty Taylor from Portsmouth and will use Dean Richards in part exchange. Don't know if this is true, but Taylor is a talented young player who had a bad injury which kept him out for the first half of the season, but he made a decent comeback. The club tried to sign him a couple of years ago from Luton, and he is a lifetime Spurs fan, but at the time the club had just signed Ziege and Taylor didn't want to be a backup, so he opted for Portsmouth. If the club can agree a fee now then I'm sure he'd sign, and would be very good, he'd fill that left back spot very nicely IMO. The club are also allegedly looking again at bringing in Argentine left winger Kily Gonzalez, very talented player when he's fit and may well be available from Inter. The club were linked to him last year.
At least Davids went to a foreign side who we won't play, rather than a Liverpool or Chelsea. Taylor for Richards would be amazing. We still need a centre back though.. Gonzalez was excellent for Valencia but sort of disappeared when he signed for Inter... watch out Edgar, it could happen to you.
Misunderstanding? Really send, no need to get nasty. There's a rivalries forum for silliness like that. Obviously this is a bit over the top. I'm not a big fan of hyperbole, particularly when its smack directed at me for no reason. I asked a serious question about your evaluation of a few players because it seemed so shockingly different than my evaluation, nothing insulting was intended. Hargreaves is a consistent starter for a world power club, fringe England National Team player, young and improving. Clearly Bayern Munich, Sven, and many others rate him as a top player. You can't say that about Davis yet, although we hope Davis will improve and become that type of prospect. Whether I accept it???? Come now Send. Your opinion differs from mine, can we be civil and leave it at that? Neither of us knows the future well enough to condescend, and its not very polite. Let's leave that element for the rivalries forum. If my post quoted above was offensive, I appologize, it was never intended to be so, it was an honest question, nothing more. I thought that from the "IMHO" it was obvious that I meant nothing negative ... apparently I didn't make it as obvious as I meant. As for Davis, I hope he becomes the next Roy Keane with a better attitude. I'm just not expecting it. -Digital
Good points. I'm a big Gonzalez fan, and I think he can add a lot on the wing. I don't think Inter's previous coaches used their wings well enough. Cuper seemed angry at AVM and the next guy (Zaccheroni was it?) was dead-set against using Cuper's acquistion KG. Both are good wingers I think. I don't know enough about Taylor to be sure on this one, but I am convinced that Richards best days are behind him, and that he's not the answer to organize our talented but young center backs King and/or Gardner. -Digital
Re: Misunderstanding? You said I must have been joking, I said you were smoking. No need to go over the top about it and get wound up... Hargreaves is being made available by Bayern Munich because he's just not good enough to likely hold down a regular place in the first XI when all the other players are fit and they've finished rebuilding the squad this summer. I'm sure they'd still value him as a squad player, but they're happier to cash in on him, particularly as he keeps publically inviting bids from the Premiership for him, not that any have been forthcoming to date. No shame in that, but the real point is that his playing style is just not what the team needs and is not as effective for the club as I'm confident Davis will be. Hargreaves is in the England squad primarily for his versatility, fitness and overseas experience. All of which are not important factors in what Tottenham needs. Heskey has also been favoured by Sven, while James Beattie hasn't, yet I know which one I'd much rather see at Tottenham if there was a choice between the two. By all means have your own opinion and state it but saying that a player is much better than another and that anyone who disagrees with you "must be joking" is far too much. Makes me question whether you're basing this opinion on what you think is right, rather than what you've actually seen with your own two eyes.
Both of those signings would be great, IMO. Kily is currently playing on the Copa America squad, and Matty Taylor has looked good every time he's played. Let's hope we can pull both of these off. I love our forum. It's like one big happy family.
Hehe, of course if we all agreed all the time it wouldn't be as interesting, it's all good natured Didn't see it myself but I heard Kily thumped some oppostion player the other day, anyone know what happened?? Nice to know that he can stand up for himself and dish it out if it's true.
Argentina vs Colombia? I think i did hear about a punch up. Argentina went on to win 6-1, Saviola scored 3 in 14 mins!!
