    The Rough Riders?

They started off really well, drawing 4,147 a game in 1997, but it went progressively downhill from there.

    1997 4,147
    1998 3,143
    1999 2,788
    2000 1,973
    2001 1,098

By 2002 they were in DIII and by 2007 they were in the PDL.

Do you have their 95 or 96 Attendances ?

But considering how much more friendly the country in general is to the sport now than it was in the mid-90s along with the fact that the Cosmos have a higher name recognition and promotion budget than the LIRR had. I'd say it's far more disappointing what the Cosmos actually draw.

I have a handful of 1994s and 1995s and most 1996s, as it turns out.

    1994 - 3,600
    1995 - 3,823
    1996 - 3,023

I would not disagree with you there.

    I'm sad, but not surprised.

Said it numerous times before they actually took the field. When you hype a product, that has zero chance of living up to that hype, there can be a real show of apathy once the initial hype subsides and reality sets in.

It's worse in this situation because of nostalgia and images of the old Cosmos that were bandied about and promoted, and the aggressive rhetoric of the new Cosmos...FO and fans themselves, that never could be met, which would cause more disillusion in the product. It was handled poorly on all fronts.

My concern with the way they were handling it was that the Cosmos name was worth more, and meant more without an actual team.

They way overvalued the brand in today's market, and created an environment that invited backlash from some and eventual apathy from the casual observer and fan.

The current regime has actually done more to harm the brand than promote it because they had no idea about the current soccer environment in this country, and what their brand actually meant.

    Nowmtheir job is even tougher.

Zoid, our people invented the term (if not the concept) schadenfreude and it tastes like spaetzle.

    MMM....spaetzle.

Well, TBH, I'm kind of sad to see the situation, but it's another nail in the coffin of the old guard, where the world is all rainbow sherbert and roses in the old days. Hail Sacramento, Minny, SA, Indianapolis amd the new workd of US Soccer. People who care about the game itself, and not some fantasy.

If only Giorgio was still alive and in an Italian jail it would all be perfect.

The REDBLACKS wouldn't last long if they needed to tarp any seats. OSEG group purposefully built the stadium with a limited capacity for football to drum up demand and have a cozy atmospere, and it has worked very well (avg. attendance for CFL league wide is around 26-28k). Even at their absolute worst, the Rough Riders (old football team) drew 18k-22k, but poor management, 16+ losing seasons (in a 8-9 team league), and an almost 30k stadium at the brink of collapse spelled doom for them.

The south side lower deck is the prime setup for the Fury (like prosoccercdn mentionned). For the opener vs. the Cosmos, they opened the northside stands for the walkup crowd.

and Lonnie Glieberman. That guy was a sports journalists dream. His dad bought him a pro sports team to play with and he was a one man human gaffe machine. The unintended comedy he generated was priceless
