Let's give the fatigued players a much needed rest here, and bring them in at half if necassary (Villa, Messi, Alves and probably Xavi as well).

    Adriano------Mascherano--------Abidal------Fontas
    ------------------------Busquets------------------
    ------------------Thiago------Keita----------------

Couldn't agree more. We've been looking a little tired and our boys need a break. Our last couple of matches have shown that

Pique and Puyol said to be cleared to play in this game but whether either or both will start or just get minutes to work them back in slowly is a question and is further complicated by tiredness and 2 more games in quick succession (at Prague v. Plzen and at Bilboa).

Sanchez is said to be very close and very eager to play again but may not be cleared by Barca till after the international break (though Chilean doctors would probably clear him to play in their 2 WC qualifiers - yuck).

Sure, today's news (barcastuff and/or totalbarca who both take from multiple sources) said Alexis likely to be cleared to play at Bilbao next weekend (which as I keep complaining about means he'll immediately need to fly to South America to fly some more (to Uruguay then Chile IIRC)). Still, great to have him back and, even if we did not play him, Chile would still want him with their team and that is their right.

    no rest for the wicked

maybe we can afford to rest messi and others against viktoria plzen, but we need these three points.

after all the blah blah blah this past week they will want to make a statement here.

mallorca isn't a big game in itself, however it could turn out to be a key match psychologically with everyone screaming 'crisis!' and madrid thumping their chests at the moment.

the team has lost some of their early season momentum, the already thin squad is being stretched, the biggest matches are a few weeks away, and there's another international interuption coming up, so it wouldn't surprise me if pep has been deliberately holding the team back a little and slowing the pace down to keep them fresh.

we've seen pep do this every season he's been in charge now where he will get the team to play within themselves to preserve their energy in order to peak at the right times when the big games come around.

the new additions to the squad were supposed to allow pep to rotate the squad and allow the team to go all-out every game, but all these injuries have made that impossible.

can't wait to see alexis back.

    I would go with;

[LINEUP-4-3-3]Iniesta, Villa, Adriano, Thiago, Busquets, Fabregas, Abidal, Piqué, Mascherano, Alves, Valdés[/LINEUP-4-3-3]

We would then have: Messi, Xavi, Keita, Maxwell, Puyol, Cuenca and Pinto on the bench...

Pique, Puyol, Montoya, Deulofeu and Cuenca are in the 21 man squad called up for the game... Three of those players will be discarded from the list before the match... So only Pedro, Afellay and Sanchez are absent.

I can't believe how the media is blowing two performances by Messi out of proportion. It's ridiculous, he's been performing at such an exceptional level for so long now that he makes us forget how great of a game he has even when it seems mediocre. At the beginning of the season there were two matches maybe about a month ago that I gave the MOTM to players that I thought weren't the MOTM but I felt bad putting Messi down as the number one guy for that many consecutive games. The point I'm making here (before it gets me banned from MOTM voting lol) is that he's "on" his game 95% of the time, and when he is, in the majority of matches, its not even close as to who is the best player on the pitch. Iniesta was MOTM against Sevilla, no question....but Messi couldve had three or four goals for what was a substandard match by HIS levels. He's put the bar so high that we dont realize what a special talent he is. This team, Pep's teams are out of this world. We are spoiled as fans. I know this because whenever we don't win, there's only three or four people voting in the MOTM as if it was a disaster of a performance. The only poor performance I have seen from this team was the last match against Granada. Anytime that we draw, when you look back at the match we could have probably had five goals. Sociedad in the second half was another poor performance, but when Sanchez was on we were up 2-0 and it should have been three in the first twenty minutes. VISCA EL BARCA.

Is the game at 11 pacific 2 eastern or 12 pacific and 3 eastern? I know it says 11 up top but ESPN is showing 12, wondering if Barca moved their clocks in advance of ours? World Clock still shows 9 hour difference. OK, just re-checked BarcaStuff and he just stated game to start in 3 hours, so 11 a.m. it is. Sorry I ever doubted VEB.

As for lineups Pep is so hard to gauge. I'll agree it would be nice to see Messi rested but absent Pedro and Alexis and in the midst of a "goal drought" by Messi and the team I will go out on a limb and say no rest for the Messi.

Kickoff is 8pm local time. Western Europe is still 6 hours ahead of US eastern, and 9 ahead of pacific, as you said. So, kickoff is 2pm eastern/11am pacific.

Pep's called up Cuenca, Deulofeu, and Montoya. There's a lot of hope that Deulofeu gets some PT today. For Montoya getting a game would help keep him in contract with us. Pep still needs to make 3 cuts to the final roster, however...

I hope Pep doesn't get too experimental: Mallorca, since Laudrup left (or was he fired, eh VEB? :p), is coming off 2 consecutive draws on the road, at Osasuna and Atletico.

Thanks for confirming time; love to see Deulofeu and Montoya get PT but as you said, they'll be lucky not to start in the stands. We need goal(s) and 3 points, so they'll be a darn good squad out there today.

I could see *one* of those three youngsters getting a start or coming in as a sub today, but I think we'll see a strong lineup.

Pedro, Afellay, and Alexis injured means we will probably see Iniesta or Fabregas nominally in the forward line, and in practice we'll see all kinds of overlapping/switching shenanigans between them and Messi, if he plays.

Barcelona bench: Pinto, Montoya, puyol, pique, Cesc, Iniesta, Deulofeu!

Wow, all the youngsters made it and Cuenca even starting, again! See who that leaves in the stands: XAVI, Fontas and Maxwell. I assume that just means Xavi is definitely resting, not any little injury for him. Glad to see Xavi rest, we have Cesc and Andres on the bench if the midfield or fwd line needs a boost.

Great streams always welcomed. English and esp. Ray Hudson a plus.
