Unserious league run by unserious people. I wish we could track all these "new fans" and kids with Messi jerseys to see how many continue watching or going to MLS games after 2025. I'd be shocked if even 10% of them attend another game after he retires.
Thank you. That was the whole point in my original response. Our resident referee shill seems to think they're completely different.
Miami was more impressive in their loss to us in the leagues cup. When Messi and Saurez are both out there, they don't really press, but they have the horses in midfield and experience at the back to pick up the ball, get it forward, and make something happen. When they don't have Messi and Suarez out there, they are incredibly impressive. Gressel is having a hell of a year with 12 assists in a CM role. Diego Gomez is a steal at 15 million for Brighton (probably discounted for not going there until january). I think they have enough weaknesses that a team like the sounders could out perform them in the CWC, but Messi is magic.
Yeah the last 25 min or so when the crew were down 10 men, Messi and Suarez were walking, not pressing, and it really felt like 10v9 for the crew, they’re 100% a better TEAM with one of those two playing but not both. It’s hard to cover defensively for two players at a time
It's also worth noting that we're 9 months out and FIFA still hasn't figured out where the money is coming from. They turned down Apples $1 billion offer for worldwide rights because they want $4billion. Now they literally have nothing and nobody is bidding. FIFA badly wanted and needs Messi and Ronaldo in this thing as bait for broadcasters. MLS wasn't the only outfit up late rooting for Miami. That whole competition is in a lot more trouble than people think. FIFA has offered huge, ridiculous prize money in order to lure the big clubs, but nobody knows where the dough is gonna come from. At this point I don't think it's entirely safe to assume that it's actually going to take place.
Mrs KG's comment. "Well of course they know how to dive. They're from Miami." But that didn't cost us the game. BTW, the refs forum concurred that Miami goal called back was indeed offside.
Also, one lesson that seems obvious from 2024 is that we really don't need even more games to pack into our season.
Fatigue is definitely popping up but there's no way around the fact that the summer window was a disastrous failure and the Crew have intentionally played with one hand tied behind their back for the entire year by having multiple unused roster spots. The top three needs this summer were a CAM to replace Morris, some CB depth, and a true CF. The Crew got 0/3. Columbus had the opportunity to sign another DP all season or two U22s after the roster rule changes and did neither. If they didn't want to use those premium slots, there were still 4-5 senior roster spots available for TAM players or depth pieces. The fatigue would not be nearly as problematic if the GMs and Nancy did their jobs to address holes on the roster.
And guys like Chambost and Jones/Jones are apparently parked on the bench so those roster spots are being wasted on guys they went out and signed for what, filling out practice scrimmages? For all the talk about depth the Crew has a painfully thin roster after you subtract they guys that they feel can't contribute.
It is odd that Chambost and DeJuan Jones seem to have a lot of synergy when they play together (evidenced again last night), while they have very little with anyone else. If they're essentially a package deal to have a functioning lineup, they're never going to play unless Arfsten falls out of favor. And we all know that eventually leads to them asking for a loan or transfer to get playing time.
It's always sucked. The whole premise originally was to have it be an opportunity to spotlight community leaders, with rotating guests each game, and that was quickly retired to have the same group of guys. It's always been symbolic of the FO's preference of forced, inauthentic support. Hopefully this is what ends it.
1841865871418950066 is not a valid tweet id No idea how they will enforce this. They are also allowing a special transfer window and temporary contract extensions for teams in the tournament. And the extra $50 million per team. Just more special advantages for Miami, a team that already gets its own set of rules.
That's all on top of Marino "$3M Transfer Fee" Hinestroza being a bust. And players who were constant starters in 2023 - and good enough to start in an MLS Cup Final - no longer being able to get much playing time at all. Primarily Yeboah and Matan. Ramirez is certainly a more dangerous player up top than is Matan, and deserves to start there. But is Chambost really better as an attacking three sub than Matan? We'll see how far this team goes in the playoffs. It's still one of the best in MLS, obviously. But unless there's a very rapid turnaround, we're looking like a club that's about to enter post-season play in pretty choppy form.
Some time soon after the jackhammer started, they realized how heavy it was...now it's the same three dudes, even though it probably could be two rotating people (example: one local celebrity and one STH) Has companions to the actual operator. "How many Crew fans does it take to operate a jackhammer?" With that said, they could have been way more cognizant, realized where the ball was and then stopped it. If they were "one behind" then so be it. It reminds me of when the drums were going during the Jon Busch retirement ceremony and nobody in the Nordecke could hear him. Just because someone has a loud item doesn't mean they should always be using that item.
I really didn't understand hinestroza given how we saw yaw didn't really work up top either for Nancy
Just another poorly written rule. If you review all red cards then a second yellow should be reviewed ….. there are a few other things that should be reviewable under certain circumstances but not every single time. This is one such instance.
Nah a good pk taker is strong mentally and will score regardless. Cucho overthought it and got cute because he hit it in the middle.
I think we don’t have enough depth and look tired defensively. So we don’t have that sense of urgency until the second half. We do still get quality looks but if you don’t capitalize in the first half and get on the front foot then you work harder and your opponent gains confidence. When teams on the road get behind early we can force them to be agressive and our counter attack is deadly. I would prefer to see us score more in the first half. We have the quality (offensively) and we need to improve in this area. Defensively we just need more talent , more athleticism because when we play other top teams our defenders are put in a tough spot repeatedly and with 45-50 games (however many it is) the wear and tear on older guys shows up. You can’t be so thin at CB & CM and then ask them to play at a high level for 90 minutes. So it’s almost as we are trying to protect our defense and not really play the way we want to play in the first half. We did increase our depth on the wings which is good. But without Zawadzki I have serious concerns at CM and he was already a downgrade from Morris. You have to always improve your roster and I don’t think we did enough in the offseason or summer window. We gambled by not getting another CM and not upgrading at CB and now it has backfired. Elite teams see a need and address it. We did this last year adding Camacho & Gressel etc… We tried and did add some good players but we didn’t address concerns and got worse selling Morris. Nagbe & whoever we pair with him does not give me confidence at this moment. We need some players to step up or we might not even make the ECF. We also have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot with silly mistakes defensively and gifting teams goals. We need to be tougher and make ppl earn it. The fact is the Crew starting XI last night is not as good as the 23 MLS Cup Champions with Morris on the roster. Morris is that good and Zawadzki was a great back up. Now in a critical stretch we have neither. We have a few more games to figure it out but we need to play better if we think we are going to win the ECF Final at Miami. Right now today all bad calls aside They are just as good as we are if not better as a TEAM. They have Messi and we have Cucho. One superstar got it done and the other did not. I hope the Crew win it all and I hope the players are still confident but I’m not confident in this roster winning the MLS cup unless someone else beats Miami. Their quality on offense vrs our defensive and midfield is a mismatch. Nothing wrong with being the second best team in MLS , it’s fun it’s exciting but I think we should have aspired to do more in the transfer window. I hope we overcome this adversity because that’s what Champions do. But I’m not sold on 2024 Crew being better than 2023 Crew or 24 Miami.
