WASHINGTON, April 23 — Secretary of State Colin Powell has warned France that it will face consequences over its unyielding opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq. Even as France appeared eager to mend fences, the top U.S. diplomat — viewed as the least hawkish among the top Bush administration figures — indicated that Washington was reviewing its overall relationship with the government of President Jacques Chirac.

Is that consequences or serious consequences? If it's the latter - mystery solved! France is next on the Donald Rumsfeld world tour...

Growing from six Member States in 1952 to 15 by 1995, the European Union today embraces more than 370 million people, from the Arctic Circle to Portugal, from Ireland to Crete. Though rich in diversity, the Member States share certain common values. By entering into partnership together, their aim is to promote democracy, peace, prosperity and a fairer distribution of wealth.

This file contains a series of charts on the population of the Union and its Member States, their standard of living, employment, economy, Europe's place in the world, and the Union and its citizens. The charts, drawn up with the valuable help of Eurostat, the European Statistical Office, also show comparisons with the rest of the world and, in particular, with the Union's main partners and competitors. The last section contains data relating to the central European applicant countries.

    (yes, it needs an update)

Powell went on to say: "How dare they not change their opinion on this and capitulate to Bush -- like I did!"

Wait....isn't this whole thread about our relationship with the French...and wasn't it the crack-addled Fooshinho who said that our tweaking of the Chirac's Gallic nose was going to be...what was that word?...oh, yeah, "disaster?"

So, where's the "only OK if we attack others" notion here??

OH, now I see...it's rattling around in your delusional project-my-fantasies-on-others Floridian sun-stroke debilitated brain...

    Now I get it!!

Do yourself a favor--get a wide-brimmed hat and put your face up to the air conditioner. Give it some time, and the swelling will go down.

    There....feel better now??

This seems rather uncharacteristic of Powell. I'm guessing this is the result of one of two things:

    1) Powell is taking this position on orders from the Cheney/Rummsy crowd.

    or

    2) Powell was personally betrayed by the French. Is it possible that he pushed Bush to take the war decision to the UN because he had guarantees from the French that they wouldn't block it? And then they did an about face leaving Powell as the leper of the Bush Administration?
