Alright. I just wanted to get your opinions from the match. I thought that the ref sucked. While I know that refs make mistakes, there are things that are givens.

That ridiculous JMM call destroyed the back-and-forth flow of the game. Oh well........

That was some of the most dreadfully one-sided officiating I've ever seen. First of all, there's the PK given for Heaps taking the ball in the face. Second, Joe Max is given a red card for a yellow offense. Third, Beasley gets a yellow for an offense that draws an AUTOMATIC RED CARD. He was the last man back, that's an AUTOMATIC RED. I don't understand why the ref only gave him a yellow.

Add to that the Fire players flopping around like fish, several "phantom" fouls given against the Revs, and the ref actually tangling with Noonan and stunting the attack late in the game, and that was an atrocity of a match. It wasn't beautiful to begin with, simply because the new ball coupled with the artificial surface led to lots of funny bounces and players slipping. Both goals were REALLY ugly ones-- if I can find a good photo of Wolde chasing Taylor's shot into the net, I'm going to photoshop it so he's blowing on the ball, his eyes bugging out. :D

A satisfactory enough conclusion, I suppose-- the defense held up magnificently, especially Rusty Pierce, who proved to be as valuable as any two defenders. Great save by Adin, too. I think that better officiating would've yielded a win, especially if Moore had gotten decent service, but I guess that won't be happening.

One question-- will Joe Max be able to appeal to MLS and have this card overturned? That was an obviously unfair call, and he should be allowed to play in the home opener.

    The ref was a HOMER.

Maybe that was Peter Pendergrast thinking he was reffing in Costa Rica again (penalty kick)..... ;)

I hate it when games are decided by the ref.

New England has to feel happier about the result than Chicago. They stole a point on the road despite a bogus PK call (even the Fire announcers agreed it was a joke) and 25 minutes of one-down following a bogus red card (again agreed to by the Fire announcers). The Rev defense gains confidence and The Legend of Adin Brown grows even larger.

And no, I don't think a red card in that circumstance is appealable. Can someone check the ref assignments and see if Terry Vaughn's doing a Foxboro game any time soon? A rope, a tree...

I love an opening-day PK save. Really gives pause to the next guy who has to step up. And if he stops two in a row? Fuh-gedda-boutit!

A very encouraging start for the Revs. They take a point out of Chicago, even with a horrible referree. Brown's stop of the Faria penalty was fantastic. Even in that bandbox of a stadium they create some good offense. The only thing that concerned me is Llamosa's lack of speed. He really seems to have lost several steps. I was glad to see Kante come in to replace him, but then I'm a Kante rooter.

Ralston had a quiet game, and his turnover led to the Chicago goal. Three or four Revs breakdowns on that play alone.

Twellman played a great game and had a few good chances that Thorton snuffed out.

Franchino had a nice run at the end of regulation, finishing with a shot to the top right corner that had Thorton crashing into the goalpost to save (he actually moved the net).

The PK on Heaps and the red card to JMM were both totally bogus. Lucky to get away with a point, deserved 3.

Looking forward to some home cooking Saturday.

Wow, that was some pretty bad officiating. The penalty call was pretty bad (tho he got the advantage call right on Beasley's goal), but I've never seen anything as inexplicable as Moore's ejection.

I mean, given all the other hard fouls we've seen so far this season resulting in yellows, it becomes even harder to understand.

My family was just howling at the TV and that sorry
ref Terry Vaughn. After the game, we immediately
sent out an email to MLS to the ref committee, don garber, and the discipline committee. Maybe it
won't do any good, but we wanted them to know how that idiot competely killed the game, made MLS
look like it employed rec league refs, and is now making a World Cupper sit for the Revs Home opener (after all the promotion for Joe Max). I sincerely hope they overturn that red card and can Terry's sorry a$# much like Kenney last year.
BTW...the Revs really came to play, gotta hand it to them for taking it in stride and coming away from that hell match with a point.

THE RED CARD FOR JJM IS THE MOST
REDICULUS, UNJUSTIFIED DECISION I HAVE EVER SEEN. SUGGEST MLS OFFICIALS TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIDEO TAPE.

THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON, WE FANS HAVE HIGH EXPECTATION NOT ONLY FROM THE MANY TALENTED PLAYERS BUT ALSO FROM THE QUALITY, CONSISTENT QIALITY FROM ALL REFEREES.

Welcome to the boards, Muncufan. You'll get used to the phantom calls soon enough.

And try to show a little emotion, willya? ;)

The ref blew all three of these calls. I don't know if it was one-sided or homerism (probably not a word, but what the heck). I think he was well out of his depth. The A-League probably has better refs.

Adin Brown is incredible. That PK save was pretty fantastic, and to get up so quickly and stop the follow up shot... Stunning.

Anyway, I'm stunned at this game. And trying to remain calm about the absolute blindness of the ref for the JMM incident. I don't think I've ever let loose so many vicious words at a TV. ;) No matter what angle you're watching from, there's no sane way that could've been justified as a direct red.

I hope the Revs organization raises a firestorm about this match and MLS reviews the game and lets JMM play next week. There are going to be a LOT of pissed off people (me being one of them).

    silver lining

My voice is hoarse from screaming at the TV. Bonehead reffing, absolutely. That JMM should be denied his welcome back celebration because of crap officiating is deplorable. As for the ref...fire his fanny.

That said, what I really enjoyed about the game was the spirit our boys showed while playing a man down. Was it just me or did they have more shots on net than Chicago after that?!!!

I'm looking forward to next week, that's for sure!

man, i feel bad for you guys [about the Moore incident]. at least Adrian made his feelings about the call known to all the viewers!! if it was the dicks over at espn, all you'd get would be some objective-type reaction.

anyways, for some reason i remember reading something recently about the MLS Disciplinary Committe no longer overturning referee decisions on cards starting this season. i've searched everywhere online for the article, but i cant find it. i'm not sure if it was posted on mlsnet.com or if i read it on some other website. maybe i didnt even read, but i think i did- i just cant find the article, though. anyways, if this is true, that just sucks big time. did you see Joe-Max's face as he was about to leave the field? it looked like he was gonna cry. damn, i feel bad for the guy. nice job ruining his debut vaughn.

Moore's tackle looked a lot worse in real time than it did on the replay. On neither look did a red card seem warranted though ...

The Heaps "handball" was more absurd, I thought, especially given that anyone in the stadium should have been able to see the way Heaps' head jerked back when he was hit in the face.

All in all, it seems as if the mentality and toughness of this team has carried over through a long offseason.

In the Clavijo era, the Revs lose that game. Nice job by them in not losing composure after JMM got the boot.

As for the call, I just wish the refs in this league would understand one simple thing. MLS is still trying to establish itself.

This means, a.) you protect the marquee players from receiving needless cheapshots and b.) you be very careful about when you red card them.

The game is for the fans and the fans want to see the name players. People aren't going to the next week's opener to see the ref officiate. Unfortunately, they won't going to see JMM either.

To quote Bill Walton- " Just TERRIBLE".

    Oh Ralston!

Ralston blew it twice in the Chicago goal. The obvious one in midfield and then (when seen on replay) inside the box.

The reffing was definetely minor league.

Cheers! We are already ahead of the Metro-Sucks!

I was at the game and there is no doubt in my mind that the red card against Moore was justified. A vicious hack from behind. The other disputed calls I can not be certain of.
The Fire received 3 yellow cards, all deserved. Beasley was not the last man back by any means. A yellow card was the right call here.

    A hard fought game.

That might be what you thought you saw, but take it from those who saw the replays - it wasn't a hack from behind, and it wasn't vicious. It was a mistimed tackle from the side which was just short of the ball, a yellow at worst. Terrible, terrible call.

In my mind, whining about the referee is a waste of time, because referees very rarely decide the outcome of a game. As bad as I thought Vaughn was, he wasn't the reason the Revs didn't come away with three points in this game.

    But...

If you were at the game, that means you got one, real-time look at it. And I realize that's the same way Vaughn saw the play, so I guess it might have been easy for him to make that mistake. On TV, we saw several replays, and it didn't appear to be from behind, and it certainly wasn't vicious. It was a mistimed slide tackle from a guy that hasn't played a game in anger in six months. He wasn't even that far away from geting the ball.

    Ill-advised? Probably.

    Reckless? Surely.

Vicious? No way. You should know by now that JMM just isn't that kind of player. I don't think it was the kind of play that leaves no doubt in the referee's mind that the player should be ejected, and JMM has earned the benefit of the doubt over the course of his career.

As for the Beasley call, I don't think he was the last man back, either... but it WAS CLEARLY from behind. And if we're going throw JMM out of the game for a strict interpretation of the rules, then Beasley shoudl have gone, as well. But then again, DaMarcus has also earned the benefit of the doubt from MLS officials.

Jim Curtain on the other hand...

    tom.

i was at the game as well, and as an unpartial fan there to enjoy an mls game...that was a horrible call by the official, was it a cardable offense? sure, but i am sure as hell that it should not have been a red. it was a yellow, but not a red...

    a bad, bad call.

I was on the sidelines in front of the play (5 yards away), and it wasn't a red card.
