This team is hard to watch. Hope that contract with Poch is a done deal and he isn't having second thoughts about working with this group.
Is that Shulte kid any worse than Matt Turner? Probably not. Balogun; meh. Ream: OMG!. A ot of underperforming: Scally, Pulisic...
Some guys stepped up in the second half (eventually) and Schulte had a strong match. That’s about it for the positives. I thought Johnny and Aaronson looked lightweight. Mixed bag for Musah and Tillman. But none of them combined well or defended worth a crap. I think Canada won three times more tackles? We were soft and only improved when Morris/LDLT came on and Richards/Lund/Scally decided to show up. Haji brought some much needed physicality. Johnny a 30 million dollar player? Not that guy we saw today.
I hated Scally in this match. He's incapable of progressing the ball. Can't cut back across a moving defender to make a play, let alone beat a set man. Toward the end he even played a basic wide ball when he had Pepi making a run across his man centrally. We can't simplify this as always playing Scally because he's our best option in a vacuum outside Dest. He should only be playing when we're forced to defend and counter, playing to the wings in transition. Otherwise the better offensive option should be deployed.
That would imply we're much worse than Canada, which going by today, may be right. I'd more call him Canadian Jordan Morris.
Fell asleep on the couch shortly before the game started. Woke up and saw it was 0-2. Fell back asleep. Naps are great.
What a hideous and disinterested loss from a largely disinterested team. As others said above, the one positive was seeing Schulte get a start. I'm a big Turner / Revs fan but it's time for new blood. i've been a big USMNT supporter / cheerleaders for years but am starting to think that this generation is really is a mediocre team with absolutely no heart. They do in fact play like a mediocre, entitled suburban high school team. Yes, it's a friendly...but watch how other countries either bleed for their team or play with passion or fun. The US team has none of these. Some talent but no drive. It would have been more entertaining if they had Route 1 balled their way through the first half and tested Canada's back line a wee bit more, sparing us the poor build-up and the giveaways (Johnny, Ream). Oh, and Shaffelburg is a d-ck. His behavior should be bulletin-board material for any future rematch.
The USA was playing "Happy Meal " soccer again. If you get knocked off the ball, or get stripped, then go ahead and roll on the ground with your hand up, and wait for a foul call that you're not going to get. And if your teammate gets fouled, the rest of you go ahead and stand around like a bunch of broke-dick-dogs. Damn, this "team" is weak as water.
Who would you play at rb? Agree scally isnt good. Below average BL just means not that good. lund similar level. Musah/johnny/tillman no idea how to play together.
It seemed like they had no idea how to play together which is ridiculous because even if some hadn't started before, they have all been together for more than 2 years.
Varas set us up to play “Gregg ball”, Marsh expected it, and countered it perfectly: Marsch: "Our players know the US pretty well, too... I had anticipated that Mikey, with Gregg Berhalter being a big influence for him, would play a similar style of football. So we were able to craft a match plan to deal with some of those things... and we executed really well"— Charles Boehm (@cboehm) September 7, 2024 A new manager can’t get here soon enough.
Entertaining match. Marsch has really set up Canada to succeed. Their combination of energy, team speed, team physicality, and organization will trouble quite a few sides. Varas did a good job of making adjustments. In the frist half, US spread fthe field to hit through balls and to get players in 1v1 situations on the outside. The Canadians ate that up. Adjusting to play in combination improved things. De La Torre: I'd been skeptical of his even being called up. He was surprisingly sharp. Morris: his passing under pressure and through traffic was impressive. Without issue, he handled the athleticism and hustle of the Canadians. He should be playing in a Top-5 league. Lund: showed impressive pace and workrate to keep up with the Canadians. Hopefully he gets a move to Serie A. Johnny: incredibly disappointing. He got manhandled. His passing was weak. Ream: this should be his last game. Schulte: should continue as starter. Balogun: for a game that had needed to be played in front of the opponent, Sargent would've been the better choice at striker. Balogun should've started on the right.
We gotta get better in the back. Bombito was dominant, our guys were wrecked. Maybe I’m dreaming but I thought I saw Richards take a step forward and actually mix it up as the game wore on, imposing himself. I won’t hold my breath but I look forward to his next match. Ream threw in the white flag today, McKenzie and Trusty aren’t any worse and they’re theoretically on the up.
