damn i have a lot but one of my favorites was during the first season i think it was the second home game. they were down 3-0 to the mutiny. they score like 3 goals in 10 minutes capped off by a gio bicycle kick. i think there was almost 40,000 in the stadium on a saturday night, but i just remember the stadium erupting. ahh the good old days. i also remember bumping into roberto donadoni at livingston mall. when me and my cousin asked him for his autograph it looked like he almost ************ his pants. it was so funny. peace
I remember that game I think Gio went wild in that game right? A lot of good moments just not enough of them. Let me think a save that Meola made against DC United. Free kick by Etch. Meola dove up to make the save off a bullet free kick. Unfortunately we still lost the game, but that save was memorable. All of Donadonis free kick goals, and his scoring shoots off his Cryuff move. Not to mention his beautiful through passes. Tabs one v one first step speed. Not many players were as fast as he was off his first step. No one in the MLS that is for sure. The Smurfs anticpation of defensive mistakes that was fun to watch. Mathis overall game before his ACL. Man I miss that game. ----------------------- The worst moment for me was in our first home game ever. That last minute 2 foot back pass attempt to Meola that went into our goal. An own goal from our Italian back what's his name again Unagola? In the last seconds of the match that real hurt. Richie
His name was Caricola...... I'd have to say my favorite Metro memory was against LA in the playoffs in 2001, Game Two. Our team fought hard in that match and pulled off an impressive 4-1 win. 101 was rocking the entire second half, I don't know if we ever had a better crowd then that, the 16,000 in attendance were standing the entire second half, it was great.
Clints 5 goals in one game against Dallas. Diallo and Petke going at it. Diallo's 4 goals against LA. Faria and Davis' celebration in the goal -literally-after Davis scored the game winner (I forgot who).
1- The now ever popular Vermes - Arena incident in the driving rain of our first playoff match at the stadium... still have the scarf giveaway. 2- Dallas comes to the Upper West Side for a classic US Open Cup match. I will for ever hate Damian for that match... we so should of won...I always wondered what Donadoni must of thought, playing in that high school styled field..sure doesn't seem like the Serie A. 3- Another Open Cup match, home at Keane Univ. against Hampton Roads. I do remember getting under that one midfielders skin with the usual wife and photograph line.... Classic stuff. My distaste for Alexi Lalas was confirmed after that match.
1) The day Lothar was sent packing 2) The day when the MetroStars became the champions of Europe by beating Bayern Munich.
When Firmani put in Esmundo Rodriguez and he ran around on the field like a chicken without a head. That was our game where we tied it up 3-3 vs. the Mutiny and then went into a shootout.
I believe that was the night Nathan Hales was jam packed, we had a second half (failed) comeback and the place went nuts. We had as much beer on the floor as in our stomachs. It was great seeing the looks on the Yankee fans faces when they were told they couldn't watch the baseball playoff game that night.
2nd goal of Diallo on the 3-1 victory at KC, idk if it means anything to you; but the play was AWESOME, the long blast and all faria cleverlly did instead of being a ball-hog was drop header pass to diallo all alone with Bo
forgot the opponent...but downstairs at nevada smiths for an open cup game.... which went to a pk shootout....
# 1- Beating LA 4-1 in game 2 of the playoffs. I thought we would beat them and advance (even without Mathis). I didn't think we'd win the cup, but I thought we deserved to beat them. Worst moment: Cienfuegos goal in OT of game 3. # 2- Much as I dislike Diallo, his 4 vs. LA when we beat them 5-0. The best part was Hartmann taking off his gloves, throwing them to the ground in disgust and walking off the pitch without talking to his teammates.
I fondly remember a game from 2001(think it was 2001 anyway), when DC has a 2-0 lead with about 20 minutes to play. Metros played out of their minds for the final 20 and win the game. I don't ever remember being so elated after a Metros game than that. What a great victory over our rivals..... My other favorite memory comes from the All-Star game in either 1999 or 2000. They were firing t-shirts into the crowd with those slingshots. They fired one on a frozen rope that blasted this guy in the face as he was sipping his beer. Blew the beer out of his hand and covered him in it, then to add insult to injury a kid ran by and swiped the t-shirt. Hilarious....
Memorial Day weekend 1998 vs Miami in game one of the Columbia - Scotland WC tune up doubleheader. Metro victory (4-2??). At game end 56K+ chanting Metro-Metro-Metro and Meola ponding his heart to the crowd. That was the Rooney-Dougherty-Meola team that played harder than their WC prima donna teammates.
The Great Flood.... I think we played NE and we had Sh1tloads of confetti on the ground then it started raining. I think we lost the game, but it was a lot of fun. Also, The look on all the revs fan standing in line when they saw about 100 of us marching in to their stadium chanting: "EVEN NEW JERSEY, IS BETTER THAN NEW ENGLAND." That was great! This was our last game last season. the trip was great until the game started.
I only started going to the matches last season, so the 5-0 demolishing of LA was definitely a highlight.
Lalas giving 101 the finger. Tab's "the Welfare Queen" chant at the Open Cup loss to SI Vipers at Rutgers. And lastly, Peter Bockman's sh**-eating grin at RFK. Ahh, the hazy memories...
My personal fave was GIo's hat trick in 96 (my ony game I went to that year), and my favorite moment in the stadium at a Metro match is a tie BTW Serg/Pat Walsh incedent, and Footix taking Walsh's "ESC Sucks" banner
another good memory i think someone already said this but the us open game against the hampton roads at kean. i remember a whole bunch of us stormed the field and started celebrating with the metros until the security guards started making everyone leave. i grabbed one of those $100 mls balls and stuffed it in my book bag and then tab ramos gave my cousin his jersey. he also signed it. oh yeah and i tried to shake meola's hand and he just walked away he was a real a$$ hole peace
