2 goals in 22 games in a division widely seen as lesser than MLS.

Unless he's been playing midfield the whole time, no thanks.

No, I don't think this is feasible. But imagine if Kelly's brother had gotten back in touch with Ray in, oh, Novemeber? Our team might well have taken him.

But, we will take him now as long as his sister comes along.

Why can't we pay him a minimum and set the rest of the compensation as incentive clauses? Seriously, it has been reported that incentives do not count against the cap. For precedent look no farther than Twellman or Howard's contracts (regardless of whether they were renegotiated).

I would be interested in what the League would have to say about such a strategy and how they would justify certain exceptions if they were to refuse to sign Dalglish to such a contract.

Dalglish was allowed to leave Wigan last year and is now with Blackpool. Wigan is in first place in the Division, and Blackpool in eighth. At Wigan they have put together a side all but gauranteed a promotion to the First Division and perhaps capable of staying there. Blackpool will stay in the Second Division. Gives you an idea of Paul's talent. To get a gauge on this player realize that Ben Olsen did very well in the First Division, JMM played well in both the Premiere and First Divisions, as has McBride. An average player in the Second Division (from one of the Home Countries) is not likely to be much better than a journeyman at the MLS level yet Dalglish seems to want compensation at the elite level for MLS. I'd say pass on this one unless Kelly will be a cheerleader !

This requires a little more thought here.

    1. I'm not so sure that Dalglish would be coming here expecting to make a career. I think the rationale for him considering MLS was that it was an opportunity to come here, away from media scrutiny and the family name pressure, just play ball, and hopefully get his confidence and game back on track. That makes it sound like we're a charity case or a scrimmage team and I don't mean it like that. But the point is, Dalglish was never coming here for a career--to spend the rest of his life in America.

Frankly, he may be willing to sign for a much lower salary in order to try to work on his game for 1 year. The way Ray may try to sell this to him is: come here and play (when you'd normally be home in the offseason). Get a chance to rebuild yourself. Than leave and go back to Europe at the end of our season. That might work for Dalglish.

    2. The SI issue. We've got Ivanov (SI) and Nelsen (another SI). I know Stoichkov is an SI but thought part of the hangup on the trade was we're waiting for him to get a green card. Is Chino Alegria a factor in this discussion? Is there anyone else a team might be cutting lose that is an SI we'd be interested in?

    3. I'm always for adding another talented player. In this case, I'd think that Dalglish would be primarily competing with Kovalenko or one of our forwards for PT. I think I'd be more interested in adding D-mid depth. Still, I think it's worth looking at.

I am not sure that Dalgish's style is well suited for the English 2nd Division. He might fit in better at DCU. Just a theory, and he could be "crap."

I'll join the piling-on here: no, no, no, no, no!

Paying top dollar and burning an si spot on a guy who's mediocre in the English 2nd division just because his Dad was a hero in the coach's home country is the worst idea I've heard in a long time.

If there's still acquisition to be done, it seems like we'd be better off focusing on adding depth in the back and on the wings. But I mostly hope that we're able to spend the pre-season getting the collection of players we have to gell into a team.

I fear that Ray's tendency to stir up a little swirl about his latest English fantasy distracts and unsettles the team as much as it does us. Unless there's some big difference-maker to be gotten, I say stop after the Bulgarians and focus on building tactical and clubhouse cohesion.

We've got a lineup now can win an MLS Cup if they play together with passion and inteligence. Continual tinkering and speculation are only going to detract from those things.

i don't know why. daglish is not a very good player and the only thing that he has going for him is his last name.

I have a nagging, queasy feeling that Ray Hudson's desire may be motivated by sentimental nostalgia and a desire to be associated with players he has admired in the past. I fear that's what motivates his longing to bring in '94 World Cup hero Stoichkov and the son of Kenny Dalglish. I hope I'm wrong.

Weren't we looking at Paul Dalglish as a major acquisition last summer? After picking up Earnie Stewart, Alecko Eskandarian and Dema Kovalenko do we really need a guy who has scored 2 goals in his last 22 Div 2 games? Has this guy's value declined so much that he would now be willing to sign for the league minimum after being highly touted by Ray last summer?

Come on now, he has two things going for him. His last name and his sister's looks. Maybe she promised to sit on Ray's lap or something?

I have no idea if Dalglish should be considered for a place on the team. But, what is the basis for calling him a crap player, someones unbiased opinion or a knowledgeable comparison of English D2 with MLS? When he was here on trial last year Hudson's comments and Diceson's observations indicated he was a skillfull player, what has changed? Jumping on the crap bandwagon seems a little premature and possibly unwarranted. If the rumors are true, which is questionable, lets leave it up to Hudsper to make the proper call.

Grill Master...could you cite a source for your assertion that Howard's incentives won't count against the cap next season? Yeah, apparently the league did that for Taylor, but the article I read made it seem like Howard signed a normal contract.
When has Moore ever been in the First Divison? Was it pre-MLS?

I am basing it on reports from people who have seen him play in both England and Scotland.

must have been a brain freeze, was thinking of Eddie Lewis --- hell I could've thrown in Kirovski. That's my point. And I did see Mr. Dalglish play for Wigan last year on a trip to see Liverpool. Caught a Wigan match the day before, as it was the only Div 1 or 2 game in the north that Saturday. Game was not as good as a good MLS game but not as bad as some MLS games I've seen. Player skill level overall was below most MLS.
Some players stood out (Andy Liddell) but not Paul.

Please take him! get him off our wage list!
I watch Paul every week at Blackpool, and although his commitment is second to none, he just doesnt have the tallent to play at the second division, let alone MLS. He's very quick and can beat people with ease, yet his final ball is awful and he cant finish to save his life.
I also read that there had been interest from PNE and Burnley aobut him. This is absolute garbage and I dont know where it comes from!

oh and liverbird, Blackpool are going up! we'll make the playoffs again this season (we're only 3 points away when we win our game in hand). we also play the best football in the league, only our defence lets us down and this has been sorted out now with the signings of Mike Flynn and Colin Hendry, two very experienced centre halves to shore up the defence.

    UP THE POOL!
