I thought it would be good to get people's opinions on possible starting line ups...I will do what I think would be Australia's but of course,it will all depend on options > who the opposition is....

    ..................................Schwarzer...................................

    ............Lazaridis/Popovic.......Moore/Neill..........Chipperfield.................

    ....Culina................Bresciano............Grella..............Emerton...........

    .......................Kewell......................Cahill.......................

    ..................................Viduka/Aloisi.................................

That is what I would go with.....Lazaridis would probably be ahead of Popovic at LB against Japan, but probably ahead in the other two games....Moore would depend on fitness...

Actually IMO,thats a better set up than the one I did.Gives the players out wide the chance to use their pace while still being able to sit on opposition forwards.I like the idea of Emerton at LB too because it provides a bit of pace for the counters.

I like this line because its very attacking. The only player who is missing is Aloisi but where would he fit in? Could be from of the bench.

This would def. be my team. Emmo plays his best football at RB, though he doesn't want to admit it.

  11. For Germany, it should be something like that:

    .............................Kahn (Lehmann)............................

    Friedrich............Metzelder............Mertesacker..........Lahm

    Deisler.......Frings (Borowski)......Ballack......Schweinsteiger

    .........................Klose....................Podolski (Kuranyi)......

Wouldnt Cahill have to be in a more central attacking midfielder position to float in late to the box to provide arial support for crosses?

I don't put him more attacking because then the team would be too focused on attacking.

Don't you know Zico has ever prefered 4-4-2 system?

Zico uses both 4-4-2 and 3-5-2, and might even use a 3-6-1 like Randolf Carter suggested. However you need Nakazawa in the defense.

    3-6-1:

    ........................ Kawaguchi (GK)........................
    .........Tanaka.....Miyamoto..... Nakazawa................

    ....Kaji(Komano)... Inamoto.... Ono...... Santos.......

    .................Nakata....... Nakamura.............
    ...........................Yanagisawa .........................

    4-4-2:
    ........................ Kawaguchi (GK)........................
    ......Komano......Miyamoto.....Nakazawa....Santos..

    ........................ Inamoto.. Ono..

    .................Nakata....... Nakamura.............
    .................Takahara.......... Yanagisawa................

    3-5-2:
    ........................ Kawaguchi (GK)........................
    .........Tanaka.....Miyamoto..... Nakazawa..............

    ....Kaji(Komano)... Nakata.... Inamoto...... Santos.......

    .......................... Nakamura.............
    ..................Takahara......... Yanagisawa.....................

Zico sometimes tried 3-back system, but 4-back has been usual for him especially after the Confederations Cup. I think he adopt 4-4-2 at the finals.

I don't think we will play a back 4. Gus likes his back 3/5 with wingbacks.

361/541 type formation unless the other side is playing defence then we revert to the Cahill on for the extra center back; Vidmar/Popovic.

The below would be the 'normal' formation I would think. A flat back for (full backs getting forward) and the extra midfeilder (Cahill) or Aloisi would be the more attacking if a goal down etc.

    ........................................Schwarzer.........................................

    .......................Neill...............Moore...............Vidmar...................

    .....Emerton............................Grella...........................Chipperfield.....

    ...........................................Culina.....................................................

    ..................Bresciano....................................Kewel

    ............................................Viduka

He'd have to get on the feild first.

Midfeild is our strength (as opposed to defence) and at this stage: Kewel, Bresciano are ahead of him. Our coach also seems to favor Culina (of PSV) so is abit more central than attacking midfeilder our helps our defensive midfilder Grella (who is certainly in our 11) whilst still getting forward. Cahill is abit to attacking for this role.

    Great player though.

    :)

Hiddink played more of a 4-3-3. Kewell and Bresciano supporting Viduka and Culina and Cahill in midfield. The reason for Cahill being in midfield is that he is more central, whereas Bresciano and especially Kewell are better wide.

In the first game and before Kewel was subbed on in the 2nd we didn't use a back 4:

    Game 1
    • Mark Schwarzer
    • Lucas Neill
    • Tony Popovic
    • Tony Vidmar
    • Scott Chipperfield
    • Jason Culina
    • Brett Emerton
    • Vincenzo Grella
    • Harry Kewell
    • Archie Thompson
    • Mark Viduka

    Game 2
    • Mark Schwarzer
    • Lucas Neill
    • Tony Popovic
    • Tony Vidmar
    • Mark Bresciano
    • Tim Cahill
    • Scott Chipperfield
    • Jason Culina
    • Brett Emerton
    • Vincenzo Grella
    • Mark Viduka

As you can see - we played a back 3: Lucas Neill, Tony Popovic & Tony Vidmar. A fit Moore replaces one of the 2 with a McKain, Kidsnorbo or Millicivic might by vying for the 3rd spot.

    - back 3
    - 2 wingbacks
    - DM
    - 3 midfeilders
    - strike

I think MVFC is correct but the wingbacks play like left and right midfielders when we have the ball but when not they are full backs. So this means that our formation with the ball is 3-6-1 but without ball 5-4-1.

Correct. I'd class our system as a 361.

Beautiful fluent football, Gus Hiddink football ;)

    Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven,Holland)
    Scott McDonald (Motherwell,SPL)
    Tony Vidmar (NAC Breda,Holland)
    Danny Invincibile (Kilmarnock,SPL)

All of those players are currently in their respective clubs starting line ups.I haven't listed every Australian player doing that as it would take forever,so I have listed the one's likely to be a part of the WC squad, and those playing in the top leagues in Europe.I didn't add Craig Moore as he only played his first game for Newcastle a few days ago,and is miles off being match fit to be a regular starter just yet.

The Australian 'forwards' have actually had a picnic this season for their respective clubs netting a combined tally of 65 goals thus far.
